[RELz]Oblivion Stutter Remover

If someone can test those tweaks for me, I will add them to my sight on the page that features OSR and Streamline. As of now, I have not even mentioned changing bReplaceHeap. Are there any other tweaks that people generally use or some good guidelines?

I consider most of those to be bad placebo based tweaks, most of the time people will just need to tweak the heap and find which is stable and best performance for them. Setting bAllowSlowMotion=0 disables one of the main functions of the stutter removing function of OSR, I'd only use it you are running into the forementioned problem with npcs.

I will make a note of the bAllowSlowMotion setting change, along with the heap tweak. Thanks, SoSway. I will try to direct Albertine back here, so that you may be able to let him know which changes are "placebo" tweaks. He is so excitable. 70FPS is nothing to scoff at though.

Was this the only thing you installed at that time? Inability to take screenshots is a symptom of using certain combinations of Anti-aliasing and HDR, I think.

Might also be an issue with OBGE, can't recall for sure.

Yeah - only install at the time. But after having installed it I increased some of the ingame gfx-settings... primarily AA - so the result was that HDR was disabled when AA was enabled ( I am not overriding that through the gfx card driver). I basically went from no AAA but HDR and BLOOM to 4xAA and BLOOM but no HDR. Maybe that is the cause, sounds a bit strange though. I'll revert and see if it changes anything.

Jac

--- Update ---
Well first of all my initial settings report was wrong; as HDR and BLOOM can't be active at the same time my initial setting was HDR, no bloom, no AA.
So I've done some tests:
1) Just HDR - Screenshot available
2) Just Bloom - Screenshot available
3) Bloom and AA - no screenshot
4) Just AA - no screenshot - So AA is the culprit.

Is it really not possible to take screenshots when using AA? That, REALLY, kinda blows imho. Any known workarounds?

Pretty much everyone forces AA through their Graphics Card control panel settings. It allows the freedom to choose your own lighting and avoids the Screenshot bug.

I don't know if there is any benefit to using the in game AA setting. Can't remember the last time I tried it.

Otherwise, you have to use a program like FRAPS to take screenshots.

Out of curiosity, why is it a "bad placebo based tweak?" My understanding is that slo-mo isn't one of the placeholders, but that turning it off can, for some people, have a positive effect, and that since it helps them, it's certainly worth keeping in mind--especially when someone puts up a list of their settings in which the slo-mo one renders another they've set inactive. (So one or the other needs to be changed: my point in my last post.) Have you tried turning it off, yourself? I haven't, but we all have heard from others who did so in former OSR threads, and wrote positively about doing so in their particular circumstances. So let's hear from your experience using it, please. :)

By the way, all I know about those tweaks was what was written in the .ini file. Mostly I changed them just to see what would happen, but I was so pleased with the effect I'm just letting it be. I figured several of them might be "placebo" type effects (whatever that anology is supposed to mean), or at least effects which didn't directly affect anything, but what the hell? Looks great, runs fast, few crashes.

Yes I have tried, its on and, and also changing hardmaxmaxframetime, without the fps smoothing and clamping i got bad stuttering around npcs, just trying the turn around was a pain in town.

That still doesn't make the slo-mo setting a placebo, which is something without any genuine, objective effect that appears to work because one wishes it to. The slo-mo setting does work. Several others have experienced this, and written about it--unless you know they're all wrong, and didn't understand what they were doing. What it comes down to is that your setup doesn't reproduce for you the effects theirs had, for them.

And my point in any case was that he had two settings that conflicted. One needed correction, for the other to work.

No, but I'm a point-headed half-baked retarded idiot skimming my own dried slobber from my mouthguard as I type. Placebo would refer to the belief that one of these settings had an effect, when in fact it did absolutely nothing and was only there for egotistical show or something. Doubt it. Clearly all of them do *something*, and effect different systems in different ways. Regardless, I'm pleased with the setup, whether one or two of those settings doesn't have a direct effect on my particular setup - excellent mod, folks. :)

* bAllowSlowMotion=0
* bReplaceHeap=1
* Maximum FPS=70
* iSchedulingParanoia=0
* iSmoothFrames=1

bAllowSlowMotion=0 disables some code that is required for minimum FPS and "smoothing". It may fix one or more minor or major bugs in OSR, but reports of problems fixed by it have been few and far between since OSR 3 beta 5. Note that smoothing is disabled by default anyway and minimum FPS is of debatable value, so disabling this doesn't really hurt much.

bReplaceHeap=1 tends to help performance a lot, though exactly how much varies a great deal depending upon Oblivion.ini settings and unknown factors. It also sometimes hurts stability, depending upon unknown factors and which heap algorithm is used.

Maximum FPS is fairly self-explanatory, except for some subtleties involved in how it rounds units internally and how it interacts with vsync.

iSchedulingParanoia=0 will cause background processes to receive a tiny bit more CPU time, but could cause framerates to be a tiny bit more jerky. When coupled with the increase of Maximum FPS listed above, to a value exceeding the screen refresh rate, this will probably have little or no effect in fullscreen mode, but might have some effect when Oblivion is windowed or when vsync is disabled.

iSmoothFrames=1 has no effect. You need to set it to 2 or higher if you want it to have any effect. It also has no effect if bAllowSlowMotion is set to 0, as it was set above.

What do you suggest for safe tweaks the average user can make? Changing iHeapMode to 1 or 5, setting bAllowSlowMotion to 0 if they suffer the NPC issue and raising the FPS cap to their (rounded off) average max FPS?

What do you think is a good iDefaultSpin value?

Recommended tweaks are listed in the readme - basically just min/max FPS, bReplaceHeap / iHeapAlgorithm, and maybe if you're feeling lucky bAllowDynamicResizing or Renderer+0x80 suppression.
Changes you can make *should* be safe, at least in the sense of not likely to injure you, your cat, or even your computer. Most shouldn't even reduce the stability of Oblivion, though some can manage that. The easiest way to make Oblivion unstable is suppressing more critical sections (critical section mode 5), grossly subverting the intent of some of the thread safety design of Oblivion. The next most unstable stuff you could do might be enabling some of the OSR code disabled by default for stability reasons (bReplaceHeap and bAllowDynamicResizing).

I set the default value to my best guess of a good value, the value I play with on the rare occasions that I play Oblivion.
That said, theory suggests that the best value might be higher on computers with more hardware threads. Maybe. And I play on a CPU with two hardware threads, while that has 4 hardware threads, so maybe you'd be best off with a higher value? Also, iDefaultSpin is for adjusting critical section spin indiscriminately, it's possible to use the overrides to set any specific critical sections spin separately.

Anything you'd like help testing? I can get you some 4-core data if you'd like. Just a matter of telling me what to enable, disable, and which log files i should send you. I've got a fairly heavily modded game, with Francisco's items, QTP3 redimized, OOO, Armamentarium, Artifacts, Better Cities, and Unique Lanscapes, all running on vista 64 bit, 4gb of ram, 768mb of vram, and the memory access patch applied to oblivion.exe.

I've reinstalled Oblivion recently on my new system from XP to Win7 64 bit, are there any special differences I should be aware of? Like will some settings not be as effective/do anything?

You should not install Oblivion to the default folder...Why are you posting in this thread, exactly? If you are referring to OSR settings, I do not know of 64-bit-specific tweaks.

Hello, I noticed that the readme mentions the default value of 1000 for the Critical Sections iDefaultSpin is rather small and the ideal value may increase based on number of cores or hardware threads. Since Im using a quad-core computer, would increasing this value improve performance, and if so, how much would be a reasonable amount to increase it by? Also, what is the difference, as far as game performance, between adjusting critical sections for fairness vs throughput?

It can vary depending on your set up. It seems that the most popular are 1 (FastMM4) and 5 (ThreadHeap2)
I would suggest trying one then the other, and perhaps 3 as well.

In my case both 1 and 5 seem equally good.

I always used Fast4MM, but recently I've started using ThreadHeap5. In any case, the game is running very stable for me.

I just wanted to provide my findings with this :) I found that my game ran much faster with heap replacement on, but it would crash when I entered a store. Originally I was using algorithm 5. I turned heap replacement off, but I got to the point where my game was un-runnable. Really bad stutter. It would actually freeze sometimes and if I managed to bring up task manager I could see that Oblivion had become a runaway process. I then tried 3, but I still got crashes when entering a store. Not when fast travelling or entering a city, just when I entered a store. I was avoiding algorithm 1 (Fast4MM) because I had read some bad stuff about it, but I thought I'd try it after reading some comments in this thread. Supposedly it didn't perform very well on multi-core machines. Anyway I'm happy to report I'm crash free and running very well. I have a quad core (no HT), and am running XP.

Any idea to solve this graphical problem?

>>> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2BZBcrRz-Y <<<

- No VGA overheating (ranging from 110 to 140 degrees F)
- These graphical artifacts appear even with Vanilla + OSR setup
- I tried...
.......every heap settings
.......older version of OSR
.......latest drivers (CCC Suite 10.6)
.......clean install of oblivion
.......clean install of OS
.........................but no luck
- when I set bManageFPS to 0, these graphical artifacts are gone but no benefit from OSR at all
