[WIP] Oblivion style Morrowind map

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 1:08 pm

Here's a thought- you know how maps of the United States have Alaska and Hawaii kind of in a http://www.united-states-map.com/map-united-states.jpg? Could you do something similar to include a semi-detailed overview of Mournhold since you have a lot of empty space on your file? Just a little box around the size of Solstheim on your map, for easy reference? I would prefer that to the alternative, which would just have Mournhold as a little blurb in the much larger mainland, which would be pointless for me since I don't use Tamriel Rebuilt.

The current version will have everything as is, to avoid cluttering it with other stuff, but if the map becomes more of a map replacement for the game, then I'll probably be making additions for it for certain mods. Adding Mournhold to it would be kind of pointless right now though IMO, since it wouldn't be anything other than clutter.

What do you guys think could be added in terms of the extra detailing though? That being the texture the map has around Solstheim/Grazelands/Ascadian Isles?

Another pic of http://i32.tinypic.com/4hyybn.jpg this thread seems to be about, am I on topic? If I am, then can you guys give me a little feedback on this version?

I think that maybe it would be better just to mark main roads, and leave out small and/or insignificant ones...

Again, read the first post, those are the main roads, I've already removed a great deal of the roads that were on the map.

I've read it. Seems to me that there are more than just main roads.
I meant, strip off all roads that aren't necessary from some imperial cartographer's point of view. More like Ob's map (except area west of IC where they probably meant something and forgot about it), roads between cities, etc. and nothing more.
Just a suggestion, though.

I will be colourizing the map when I'm done with it, the colourized version will be an optional file.

Not really, in Morrowind, the roads you travel by hold a large importance because they lead to several locations other than cities, I won't be making all of the locations down with that blue text, but I will be adding locations akeen to the Oblivion style city details on the map, just unannotated.

have you thought about including fort firemoth?

Yeah, I had thought about that, I was going to add it but forgot to add it in, I guess I should add it before it's too late though...

So will the map give any indication of where my PC has been as they explore Vvardenfell? Like how the vanilla map has brown bits that're coloured in as one explores? IIRC, Vality's map was overwritten with what'd be displayed in the vanilla game as one explored. I assume this is still the case?

How will this cope with new landmasses (Ald Vendras, Lokken, Tamriel Rebuilt etc.)? Will those be in "old style" and the Bethesda landmasses look like this? I guess Mash's Update Maps feature would overwrite your map with the vanilla style? Not sure if you've reached a stage of being able to test these or not...

As to the way the map looks at the moment I'd say that Solstheim looks busier and more interesting than Vvardenfell, but the extra black lines bordering the rivers could do with being toned down a bit...

Is the Ghostfence significant enough to be shown on the map in its entirety (rather than just a location marker for Ghostgate)?

Looking good  Oh, not supposed to say that

Other than a marker, I don't really have any plans for "fill", perhaps the map would slowly replace itself with the coloured version if we could get that working...

They will have to be added via additional files, although it really isn't that hard adding new stuff, I added firemoth without hassle.

Yeah, the extra details on Solstheim are done, but I have yet to finish adding them to Vvardenfell.

The Ghostfence and Ghostgate will be added in the OB city style, they'll definitely need to be on there, since they are a pretty important thing to have on a map.

No no! It looks terrible! :P

Is there any chance to see the mainland on the map? TR is an almost gold standard for Morrowind now...

To the point- As mentioned on http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=1026203, I'm making a Vvardenfell/Solsthiem map (which might include the mainland) in the style of http://pnmedia.gamespy.com/screenshots/pes/26326036.jpg.

Not really any news, all I've got to do is finish the detailing on Vvardenfell and add the cites, which I've been lazy about.

Does this support new landmasses added by mods, or does it only show the vanilla map?

It's an image, so it'll "support" whatever's put onto it. Right now I've got Vvardenfell, Solsthiem, and Firemoth on it, I might add the mainland later, but right now I've got to finish up what I've got.

Agreed, looks to be coming along quite nicely SWG. It will also be nice to have an ingame map that is uneffected by texture replacers. :shocking:

http://www.tesnexus.com/imageshare/images/843673-1253650825.jpg

It turned out to be a compact patch, texture redirection and some scaling constants. Backwards and forwards compatible with savegames, it behaves like an overlay, separate to the map Morrowind updates. Low texture quality is only due to jpeg source file, and/or constant ninja attacks.

The font is not very clear, it's not very easy to read.

The roads look to harsh compared to the rest of the map.

The blue lines to represent Ghost Fence is looks to computer generated, almost 8-bit.

The effect on the southern half of Solstheim doesn't indicate what terrain you will encounter.

The outline of the land mass looks pleasing to the eye.

-edit-

If you are able to, please update your original post to make it clear what it is your want people to comment on in future.

So Hrnchamd, should it work great with a 2048x2048 jpg fine?

If so, that means I can stop worrying about getting it into the game. ;)

After that, I just gotta get the thing finished, and I don't have any timeframe for when I'm gonna have access to my computer.
