Happy new year, here's a new tune!

7. [Explore] Light from the Shadows.mp3

Notes
-----

Making a return to the big orchestra, the theme for "Light" started as a
counter-melody to the ascending tune from the Oblivion intro screen. I've
been meaning to try something with that but it took a while before I came
across a good enough match, especially since I kept straying into the Force
theme from Star Wars just by adding a couple of notes to the original.

I ended up with two versions of the theme, and couldn't decide which was
better, so I used the first as a bolder rendition paired with the original
motif, then a more flowery arrangement. The fairly long cello section in
between was supposed to be a development of the theme, though I only
managed 3 notes before it improvised itself into a melody with an unclear
time signature that still somehow holds together.

The mood of some parts seems a bit on the dark and mysterious side,
but I wanted to see how far I could push it to add contrast. Of course,
I had to let the sunlight peek through at the end so it wouldn't be too
depressing.

Sequencing this piece together took longer than before -- there were many
parts, patches, expressive string phrases to articulate, subtle timing,
and dynamics. Also I have a bad habit of wanting to perfect every note,
which I really must stop doing for my own sanity :)

Overall, I think this piece is more natural sounding than my previous ones
and keeps my goal of a different tone each time. Hope you add it to your
collection.

Hah, it's just the American way of dating things.

Still, if it were not for your bump, I wouldn't have noticed this mod! Giving it a download now, I hope its as good as the comments make it out to be :D

Each is a different set of songs, you need to download all of them. These are the best add-on musics I've heard for the game, period.

Your tracks are great, thanks for the update. I'd been playing with music disabled for a while, and this prompted me to turn it back on. I'm going to see if I can also throw in The Epic Soundtrack, which is some music for Morrowind that I like a lot. That mod takes music from Divine Divinity (with permission) and I think it really suits TES games, so it may be worth looking at for inspiration.

Thanks a lot for this music! You use a professional high-quality orchestral sample library just like Jeremy Soule, with production quality that sounds on par with the man himself (even if your first couple pieces are a little rough at the edges, which you yourself acknowledge). Even so, the composition of ALL your pieces is quite impressive, swinging between breathtakingly dramatic and sublimely subtle. I love too that you keep the atmosphere similar to the original soundtrack by deriving many of your songs from those already in the game.

Here's hoping to hear even more of these sweet orchestral sounds in the future!

8. [Battle] Turn of the Tide.mp3

http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=2825

Notes
-----

I finally got the much awaited EWQLSO software upgrade, and another battle
tune is just what I needed to get started with it. Unfortunately I had to
do battle with the quirks in it first, but I think I've got the hang of it
now, and the sounds are much more realistic.

I just happened to rewatch Lord of the Rings, which reminded me that my
favorite piece of music from the trilogy has to be "Lighting of the Beacons".
In contrast to the mostly subdued arrangements, this really blew me away when
I watched it in the cinema and just keeps getting better. The soaring violin
counterpoint played as double notes is particuarly distinctive, and I wanted
to try that out that device.

So, with that stuck in my head after listening to it a dozen times, I set out
to create something similar that doesn't sound too far from Oblivion's battle
music, while keeping it enjoyable as a standalone piece. The main march is
fairly close to the original in shape so that I could easily add the violins
later and get the same effect. The middle section is a quieter variation to
lead up to the highlight because adding another melody seemed distracting.

Wrapping it up posed a problem -- there was so much fire and momentum going, it
seemed to fall of a cliff if I suddenly stopped it, or be doused with a bucket
of water if I faded it down. All was saved when I found that you can stop a
runaway French horn theme by blasting it with a loud reply from the trombones
and trumpets, which leads to a satisfying ending.

Just wanted to reply saying how much I love some of the tracks you've posted. I've spent a lot of time choosing the songs that go best with all the others, and I noticed 3 of them I really really liked we're yours. So I did a google search just so that I could say thanks. My favorites so far are The forgotten age, Heartland Vista, and Last Haven, but Light from the Shadow has great atmosphere and works great too.

I use them all as explore tracks personally, as my public tracks have a different theme to them.

Anyways, thanks.

I didn't know that this compilation as around for a year ! Anyways, keep up the good work mate - It's the only compilation, IMHO, which is closest to the original Oblivion soundtrack :)

Nice, another new song! :)
Thinking of trying something for dungeon music next?

This is fantastically-done music, as I've said before, and I'm honestly surprised that the thread hasn't received a whole lot more attention. Out of all the music packs (and I've sampled all that I could find), this definitely BY FAR fits the best with Jeremy Soule's original symphonic work for Oblivion. There's nothing like emulating a sampled orchestral sound with your own orchestral sample library! ;) And in addition to sounding in-place next to the original music, Tashin's pieces also posses their own sweepingly unique touch.

9. [Explore] Cloudforest Awakening.mp3

It's 2009 and you're still playing Oblivion? Well, perhaps you could do
with a bit more music. Bethesda's nuclear wasteland of Fallout 3
isn't my ideal vacation spot, so I'll be hanging around Cyrodiil for a
while.

"Cloudforest" is a calm and quiet interlude to contrast the more lush and
grandiose pieces. I tried to exercise restraint to keep it subdued and
unobtrusive. It certainly owes a lot to the atmospheric woodland music
from Miyazaki films (imagine little animals wandering around, popping
up their heads now and then).

I made most of it dry and airy, with short passages and lots of breathing
space. Violins are kept to a thin accompaniment for a change, as the
woodwinds take their turns. For some forest noises, I got to play around
with more percussion toys than I normally use, and I'm glad I've found
a good use for flute trills, effective when used sparingly.

Actually, I prepared quite a bit of other material to use, but I stumbled
on the oboe theme while doodling around (almost thought it was something
from "Rite of Spring"), and everything followed from there. Hopefully
I'll get to use the rest next time.

This is awesome!

When I first played Oblivion, I realized that the opening theme sounded just like the theme from Pirates of the Caribbean. And then I remembered that I owned the Pirates soundtrack, and decided to toss it in as a replacement. Then I threw in some of my favourite Morrowind tunes. Ever since then, I've been looking to bolster the soundtrack, because beautiful music mixed with Oblivion's beautiful graphics just makes playing... beautiful.

Thanks a lot for these. They're really great! :D

The Miyazaki influence shows too. And I love the Studio Ghibli soundtracks, so that's even better!

It's taken a bit of time to come up with something worthy of adding to this collection, but I think this one's worth the wait.

10. [Explore] Eternal Renewal.mp3

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=11436
http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=2825

Notes
-----

"Eternal Renewal" might have some hints of familiar tunes, though it's not
based on anything in particular. It has some light bouncy sections
interleaved with smooth sweeping ones, and I quite like the contrast of
texture and how they become different aspects of the same theme.

The piece is built from the same 4-chord sequence (played on the harp --
apologies if any harpist ever has to play this!), with no deviation until
the end. I tried it partly because I was a feeling bit lazy, but I was
also curious if I could come up with enough interesting ideas to fit that
cycle and overlay on each other. I thought of hiding or editing out the
obvious repeating pattern after more of it was fleshed out, but the tracks
had all woven together, so it was best to leave it alone.

I was reading "Composing Music" by William Russo, who advises that you
should carefully choose a title that expresses the unified idea of the
music, and the music should in turn express the title. Well, I think this
piece turned into something about the cycle of life, so I hope you'll find
it fitting for its name.
