[RELz] Oblivion Symphonic Variations Music Pack

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 4:29 pm

It's taken a bit of time to come up with something worthy of adding to this collection, but I think this one's worth the wait.

10. [Explore] Eternal Renewal.mp3

This... is... AMAZING.

I love the tune!

I will replace michikawas soundtrack with this one in my installation.

This is so great. One question: it would be nice if you had all of the songs in one folder, instead of 9 separate downloads. But I'm not complaining :)

Hey BeyondZork, thanks for the suggestion, I forgot there are new users who could do with a single file. Adding it now.

[edit] It's on TesNexus at least. Planet Elder Scrolls doesn't take more than 25MB without special permissions.

Definitely professional quality. Are you working in orchestra, by the way? Just curious :D

Also, only as suggestion, feel free to do whatever you wish though; I think for the next music you should make Battle and/or Public (city) related music to add more variety. I like the battle music (Legion's Rally and Turn of the Tide) very much.

Thanks.

Wow, these songs are very, very, very good! :celebration:
Truly atmospheric, very professional.

Thank you very much for taking the time to compose those songs!
(And they are going in my ipod too! :D )

Hi XtremeRampage. I'm a software developer by day, so it's good to do something different at night (that's why I stay away from the coding mods, unless I'm tweaking something for my own use). I'm lucky enough to have professional quality sample libraries and a lot of patience to get everything right :) If anyone's interested in creating this kind of music, I recommend making the investment early, because it's much easier to be inspired when you have realistic sounds at your fingertips.

And thanks everyone for the encouragement, I'll definitely try and keep up the variety.

Thanks to the Natural Environments mods, some of the shots turned out surprisingly realistic.

How time flies. I just noticed today that this mod made it into the Planet Elder Scrolls hall of fame, and Bethblog...back in August. Hmm, need to be more attentive next time. And now for something completely different.

11. [Dungeon] Domain of the Specter.mp3

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=11436
http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=2825

Notes
-----

This dungeon track was a bit tricky for several reasons. The original
tracks are very similar to each other, and it's harder to create something
that's similar yet distinct enough to be recognizable, when there isn't much
variety to study. I wanted a piece that has some good musical qualities, as
opposed to a collection of drones and effects. Also, it's the first time
I've tried to compose in a dark/scary style, so it took a while to get the
right atmosphere.

"Domain of the Specter" is a bit more dramatic than the standard music,
hopefully not too much. To set it apart from the smoother continuous style,
I've broken it up into segments, I suppose to cross paths with the drifting
ghost every now and then. It's probably best suited for Ayleid ruins --
I'm not a big fan of dungeons to be honest, but those would be my favorite.

I tried not go overboard with the effects -- they are from a real orchestra,
and it was tempting to throw in more because it was fun discovering them all
buried in the library and I'll rarely use them for anything else. You'll
hear various scratching, sliding and growling effects from the strings; the
metallic rolls and screeches are from Chinese tam-tams.

I think I'll go back to more relaxing music next, but I might revisit the
dungeons in future. In the mean time, enjoy this for Halloween (the fact
that I'm writing this in late October is purely a coincidence...).

i use the "eternal renewal" theme in both oblivion and fallout 3, it sets a bleak, depressed yet hopeful mood thats absolutely perfect for the capital wasteland

it's easily one of your best pieces to date, and your new dungeon theme also works extremely well with both fallout and oblivion

a surprising amount of your music has a mood that works equally well on both games.

i have been checking PES/TESnexus every other day waiting for new songs, i can't wait to hear your next piece

I've been thinking about releasing some of my bands tracks for an Oblivion music pack. It's heavy metal so that may turn off a lot of people. Once the CD is released I just may do it.

This is the first playlist I've found that seamlessly integrates with Oblivion's existing music. Nice work!

Another one in a somewhat new style. Enjoy gossiping with the townsfolk!

12. [Public] Tales and Tidings

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=11436
http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=2825

The orchestra is on vacation, so "Tales and Tidings" is brought to you by a
string quartet. Well, I'd like to say that I designed it that way from the
beginning, but actually, it was reached by lots of trial and error. I had a
basic tune composed on the piano that I thought was pretty good, but it just
wouldn't take shape as a computer rendition. After trying many instruments
and ensembles that all sounded "wrong", it was my 2nd attempt with a string
quartet that began to look promising (one reason why it's taken so long to
get this out).

I did intend to create a friendly and down to earth piece, and I went with
3/4 time because I haven't used that in a while, but also because it let me
mix in reminders of the rhythm and theme from Morrowind/Oblivion. The style
is a fairly traditional string quartet one, with close harmony and interweaving
parts, which I think works well with insistent melodies. For the sake of
authenticity, I kept it playable by 4 people in real life (volunteers welcome!).

Solo strings are rather difficult to simulate, and I don't have a dedicated
string library. I had to compensate by getting the articulation to be as varied
and subtle as possible, choosing ranges that GPO plays well and applying a lot
of filters. Fortunately, the piece is light, and effective when played quietly,
which hides a lot of issues. I was worried that the lack of ambient padding
tones would make it sound thin in the game, but I found it a surprisingly
refreshing change from the harps and flutes.

Being constrained to 4 instruments has been tough -- a bit like cooking a 3
course meal with only 4 ingredients. It's been a valuable lesson in how to
keep music lively and build harmony with a minimal contingent, but I'm quite
ready to return to my regular palette of sounds for the next piece. So clean
the rust from that sword...
