Another one in a somewhat new style. Enjoy gossiping with the townsfolk!

The orchestra is on vacation, so "Tales and Tidings" is brought to you by a
string quartet. Well, I'd like to say that I designed it that way from the
beginning, but actually, it was reached by lots of trial and error. I had a
basic tune composed on the piano that I thought was pretty good, but it just
wouldn't take shape as a computer rendition. After trying many instruments
and ensembles that all sounded "wrong", it was my 2nd attempt with a string
quartet that began to look promising (one reason why it's taken so long to
get this out).
I did intend to create a friendly and down to earth piece, and I went with
3/4 time because I haven't used that in a while, but also because it let me
mix in reminders of the rhythm and theme from Morrowind/Oblivion. The style
is a fairly traditional string quartet one, with close harmony and interweaving
parts, which I think works well with insistent melodies. For the sake of
authenticity, I kept it playable by 4 people in real life (volunteers welcome!).
Solo strings are rather difficult to simulate, and I don't have a dedicated
string library. I had to compensate by getting the articulation to be as varied
and subtle as possible, choosing ranges that GPO plays well and applying a lot
of filters. Fortunately, the piece is light, and effective when played quietly,
which hides a lot of issues. I was worried that the lack of ambient padding
tones would make it sound thin in the game, but I found it a surprisingly
refreshing change from the harps and flutes.
Being constrained to 4 instruments has been tough -- a bit like cooking a 3
course meal with only 4 ingredients. It's been a valuable lesson in how to
keep music lively and build harmony with a minimal contingent, but I'm quite
ready to return to my regular palette of sounds for the next piece. So clean
the rust from that sword...
