Oblivion & The Fallout Series Character Creation

Post » Fri Oct 16, 2009 2:15 pm

What I hate about tweaking the preset characters is you move a slider a tiny bit and the head will 'snap' into a weird shape. Then you try to move it back, but it's too late. It's fixed into its new deformity.

It's much easier to use the GECK. It has a multitude of more detailed sliders/tonal controls (which don't interlink), and you can right click on the face and just pull it about the way you want it.

Slider systems make me want to kick a puppy. Yes, you have more control. But unless you have exhaustingly detailed knowledge of human facial structure you're just going to create 40 different kinds of physical deformity.

That must be it then. :P I've created some good looking characters, it just takes a lot of practise. I do wish the eye colours actually looked different, though. The blue eyes are almost exactly the same as the dark brown ones!

I used to have these problems but once you play with it enough you can produce any look you want with a quickness. It just takes a LOT of trial and error.

Not really, it seems the skull of your character is tie to your race; Only Asian can have nice forehead with small nose, only Caucasian can have good cheek and thin lips, only Hispanic can have decent jaw and African can have nice big eyes etc.

With all the time we put in on the character editor there should be a razza-fraggin achievement or trophy for it at least. Don't they realise that they're alot of artist that play games to & how artist see every flaw on the character's face that they make & how throughout the entire game that flaw just stares at you relentlessly saying HA! you created a character but you can't get rid of me Or when you walk up to some girl on the Vegas strip & she says hey cutie & your thinking cutie!? DON'T YOU SEE THE FLAWS TO? I'M A HAG! So i restart my entire game over till i get it right how i want, in oblivion I was level 35 did alot of the quests & restarted because i hated how my character looked & how every NPC looked better

Oh & I kinda wondered about that too, oldspice said something about long hair 4 the female options it's weird that there's isn't any long hair options & why don't the raiders & other gangs have scares or tattoos. wouldn't it be fitting if members of vaults had a vault number tattered on their skin

I love that i can create my own character especially a female character but in oblivion & the Fallout series I HATE THAT SLIDER. I adjust the nose & everything else slides, i try & add color to my character's lips & i get a pink beard. truthfully the starting characters are ugly & because of that stupid slider it took me 20minutes just to get my character looking decent & then i restarted 5times because she still didn't look good & WTH is with the bad lightening in the character creater it's kinda poorly lit

Word

I got my Oblivion character to look EXACTLY like me but it took about 2 hours and Ive never come close again.

WOW! How about if on the sliders numbers markings were added that way players could remember the settings that suited them making it easier to get that look each time you started & in every Fallout game you had those number settings to go by

I dont recall in oblivion when you adjust your nose or chin every thing else slides like you describe. Funny thing is most people never even see their face at all when they play. Bethseda games are best in first person and your prolly wearing a helmet anyway. Yet I do agree a good face is good to have even if you dont ever see it.

I agree that the amount of choice given in character creation also constrains the system to some point, which sadly results in some truly disgusting to look at characters.

On the other hand, all of my dude characters (I don't play as chicks) end up looking like Wolverine, so I guess that it doesn't really matter to me.

I hate the noses in this game, The noses are horrible looking.. Deformed, So I always play on a hispanic character to change the nose to something more realistic..

I'm only capable of making decent-looking characters. I play on console, without the help of mods, and I still leave The Imperial Prison/Vault 101/Doc Mitchell's thoroughly pleased with the results of my hard work. I don't depend on the presets to make a decent face. I randomize until I'm satisfied, and then continue to alter that. Sometimes, this can take upwards of an hour. It's worth it, for a character you'll be spending hundreds of hours with.

I'm not trying to sound like a dike. I'm just saying that you can get amazing results out of chargen if you just put more effort into it than choosing a preset face and changing the hair.

They're both awful. Absolutely pale in comparison to the Character Creation in Saints Row 2.

I agree...it's just a matter of the effort you're willing to put into it. My characters look almost exactly like me and without any goofiness factor....yeah it was a little frustrating and time-consuming, but the end result was great.

With the "ronin" facial hair and eyeglasses combination, Fallout 3 and NV is the only game where I can emulate my appearance.

I never play in first person. It doesn't look anything like what the world looks like through human eyes (no peripheral vision, you look down your chest and legs are not there etc etc etc etc). It's a fricken gun or hand with a sword bouncing on the screen. Absolutely hate it. (I refuse to play any FPS).

So character creation, for a 3rd person die hard like me, can be a big deal.

Dammit I want this:

I have two unmodded characters that I'm real satisfied with: http://social.bioware.com/uploads_user/1563000/1562460/62766.jpg and http://social.bioware.com/uploads_user/1563000/1562460/66064.jpg, but I'm in complete agreement with the OP. I really hate not having total control over sliders. There is no need to force other sliders to shift simply because I want to make the chin taller or the lips fuller. We also need much better lighting because as it stands, the dim lighting in the character creation screen makes it real hard to determine actual skin tone and feature differences. It was disappointing to discover that nothing was improved with the creator from Fallout 3 to New Vegas. And no, I should not have to rely on silly mods that make my characters look like Japanese cartoons in order to create someone decent.

I definitely agree with the lighting issue....it forces you to have to understand how the character in the creator will look in the game because it will not be the same....so it takes practice and foreknowledge of how the two relate.

As for the moving sliders, It's also frustrating but I understand the reason...it's to prevent clipping or other irregularities and deformities in the mesh that can occur with non-gradual seams...I actually think this helps create very quality end results if you put the effort required into it....like your faces....they look great.

I can't wait for a game..(I like) to have a character customization as in depth as The Sims 3. Saints Row had pretty good character customization but I didn't like the game too much..

Thank you for the last comment. ^_^ I'm still not convinced about the slider restrictions. If a player wants to create a nose that stretches from ear to ear and a mouth as small as a dot, let them! LOL. It's the players own damn fault if such grotesque distortions cause clipping and yet, the adjustments that I've tried to make (but was hindered by due to other sliders moving) were minor and not likely to cause clipping issues. Correct me if this is wrong but I'm certain the Oblivion creator did not force certain sliders to readjust.
