Oblivion & The Fallout Series Character Creation

Post » Fri Oct 16, 2009 12:30 pm

I love that i can create my own character especially a female character but in oblivion & the Fallout series I HATE THAT SLIDER. I adjust the nose & everything else slides, i try & add color to my character's lips & i get a pink beard. truthfully the starting characters are ugly & because of that stupid slider it took me 20minutes just to get my character looking decent & then i restarted 5times because she still didn't look good & WTH is with the bad lightening in the character creater it's kinda poorly lit

All too true. On Oblivion, FO3, and New Vegas, I've hated that slider. 30 minutes or more just to have a character who doesn't like quite right. Almost makes you want to make a dumb character, just to match their look of mild retardation.

Who else here thinks that the male default character (face preset 1) looks fat?

It's the lighting that makes it look fat.

Personally, I'm just waiting for a YouTube guide to come out to make a Chuck Norris look-a-like. (Like the one for Fallout 3)

I used the #9 male character preset face and got the unsettler hair style. Looks decent to me.

In oblivion i made it to level 20 & the look of my character bothered me so much that i restarted from level 1, fallout3 made up 4 it because you can redo your character without restarting but because of the bad lightening i'd redo my character then run outside 2 daylight then run back inside then run back outside & i did this for 20minutes.....seriously I love creating my own character i really do It's a big game selling point 4 me, Character creation OMG YES I'm buying it 4 sure BUT that stupid slider there should be a razza-fraggin trophy just for using the thing. OMG wth why does my characters in fallout new vegas & fallout3 look like they have dirt on their face Or a big freaking dent in the side of their cheeks

Me & my friend mazzy was talking about character creation & this is what she said
I love character creation cause you get to make your own protagonist or villain. Then you enjoy the game more because it had a personal feel to it. I hate games that leave you stuck with an ugly [censored] character. If the character is lovable from the get go, its fine. I really wish more games had character creation. Most games if its offered the character can't be used for much if anything. Imagine THIS! What if Uncharted 3 allowed you to make your OWN character?

I was mostly satisfied with slight modifications to white male #9.

But in general, I have been severely disappointed with character generators from Bethesda. Even those in Mass Effect 1 and 2, though much better, still had the serious flaw of every character you could possibly come up with miraculously looking like a first cousin, if not full sibling, of ANY OTHER character you created. I still haven't played a big RPG like this where I was really happy with how my character turned out. I'm constantly just settling for not hideous.

They should mod Oblivion so my Dark Elf Assassin can wear a pompadour and slickster goattee...

I think the character creator is too complicated. Just give us a set of head shapes and sizes, eyes, noses, etc. and let us mix-and-match.

Its trying to constrain the mesh proportions. For instance, if you have a tiny, tiny nose and you try to increase the width and size of the nostrils, they'd get so big to the point where they'd touch each-other and completely hide the nose tip. Thats just one example of the many things that can go wrong when you have the power to control everything on someone's face.

I believe if you keep going back and forward, between sliders, you'll eventually get what you want...but its doing it for a good reason.Unless your purposely trying to make yourself look like a walking ghoul! :P

The bone to pick with FNV and F3 character creation is the hair and their textures. They look incredibly illustrated and very muddy. I was very disappointed to see that Obsidian made no changes to the quality of the hair...as I felt Fallout 3's hair meshes + textures were a step in the wrong direction compared to Oblivion.

I know you can go back & forth between sliders but seriously you know how annoying that is how long it takes to get a decent looking character out of this. Other games you have a much better facial construction, SaintsRow2 i can get a great looking character out of it TheSims i can i never ran into that one feature is overlapping another Not once & if it ever did don't you think it should be easy to correct. I'm very much on how i get my character 2 look like i want or at least something i'll be happy with & i hate when i go through fallout new vegas & see female NPCs with even skin tones no dents in the side of their face & slightly red lipstick when it took me 20minutes because of that stupid slider to get something i'm settling for, it makes me very unhappy & want to restart even if i'm level 38

For PC you can bring up the console and type showracemenu

I did that many a time in Fallout 3.

Here is one character I had for awhile, but I lost the save.

Here is a character I had most recently for FO3 and converted to New Vegas:

If you want slider screens I can share them.

i only have 2 problems with it and thats when you leave it you can plainly see a line at the base of your neck connecting to your body and the fact that they reused (not 100% sure) but they reused most if not all the fallout hair styles beards etc its like they added a few new haircuts for the guys

Yea i notice that too no new female hairstyles & You know what they'll probably do, $3.99 add-on for 3 new female hairstyles. I love fallout new vegas but add-ons are getting overpriced 4 some games. Anyway maybe they'll be a patch to better the character creation slider, Then we'll have2 restart all over again to take advantage of the improvement, Why couldn't they just give the dr. the skills of a plastic surgeon as well. Bethesda should know by now that whatever character we create isn't always set in stone, other games know this why don't they......& Very nice work on ur characters Prosthetics how long did it take u

I guess I lucked out, because I randomly tinkered for 5 minutes, threw on an old-timey face hair and got a decent western style face for Pingas Kahn.

I think they should offer a LOT more face presets. The ones they had are quite ugly, except famle caucasian number 10 (with a bit of tweaking). But it's obvious the engine (and the artists) are cable of so much more because there are some gorgeous women in the game. I met a character called Cass, who was drowning her sorrows in some NCR outpost, and she's gorgeous. I would love it if my character looked like her. You compare her to some of the presets and you wonder why they're so bad when they're making faces like that!

I agree, & if you think Cass looks great head over to the king's area & go find the fallout followers or whatever they're called i forget the name & look at the women's faces, smooth evenly toned round faces & i'm like why didn't have all the presets faces start that way.

After spending too much time and getting only mediocre results, I just started using the “randomize” function. Simply keep clicking the button until something you like pops up, adjust the hairstyle and shade, and you’re all set to go.

I love the amount of control the Oblivion sliders give, but agree that character generation needs better lighting (Dragon Age had you trying to guess eye colors in the dark, as wel.) and that they should provide templates that make it easier to design an attractive character. All the templeates needn't be pretty/handsome, but a couple should be. There seem to be enough people who want both an attractive character and a quick start that it makes sense to facilitate this. Characters who are attractive in a couple different ways even since not everyone finds the same sort of face appealing.

The character editor is horrible, I thought it was better in Fallout 3 but then I went back and saw it was the same. I guess I was confusing it with dragon age and mass effect. IT is very hard to make your character look half decent but many npcs you meet look great.

I would have liked to be able to put a huge scar on my face/head too, considering I just got shot in the head. I know these thing are unimportant to gameplay, but with this type of RPG many of us get really into our characters and the lack of customization becomes important.
