[ALPHA/Relz] Oblivion type physics?in Morrowind

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 4:50 am

Worked great, except that all the NPC's in my game turned into Bosmer, except for Fargoth, who is now a Dremora for some reason.

This is quite unacceptable. I am so traumatized that I may never be able to play Morrowind again.

Hmm, I mostly suspected an April Fool's joke but a little part of me hoped it was true... :(

The best part here was the evolution! We had nothing to do with those screenshots. And the bug reports were fantastic!

Honestly, the whole readme thing is something I didn't even think of. The fact that someone didn't read it and "fell for it" makes it all the better! Thanks for the chuckles today guys, this was wonderful! :goodjob:

How good is our map of MW's memory? Are object understood?

Maybe it's time to add an April Fool's message to the OP now that it is no longer April Fool's Day? :D

I pretty much guessed when I started reading the thread that is was an April Fool's joke.

Oops...that's my bad. Early tests that apparently weren't cleaned out all the way. The very first bit of physics to ever enter the world of Morrowind was set to trigger after my character took ten steps in an exterior cell. It so happened that my test character is in Seyda Need. When it triggered, it found the first "living" reference and shot it up into the air. Turns out it was Fargoth. It was like Tarhiel all over again. Except that we still haven't (and am not entirely sure if will ever) have the AI distance triggers working properly. About half-way down in his fall he started saying "I have a feeling you and I are going to be very close."

This needs to be made into a mod.

Good joke Fligg, good joke. :)

...But please make this a real mod...If it's possible. Come to think of it, even though your OP was a joke, it sounds reasonable. Would it be possible to use Oblivion as a type of source for emulating physics?

Fargoth flying in the air - landing on the floor. Hmm that would be a good mod! Maybe he could respawn....

It would be possible in a new engine, though, wouldn't it? (not by the means mentioned)

Nice joke!
I was also among the first April fools and downloaded this file.

But seriously: what is "Oblivion type physics" for NPCs (I am not interested in statics)? I am not an expert in this field and my observations as a player might be not correct. So, basically it is only simplified Havok ragdolls (even no Havok destruction elements ? body parts are flying in all directions after a successful hit like in Requiem Bloodymare (also modified Gamebryo engine) and, probably, in FO3 (I do not have this game). Moreover, that works in OB in a very "primitive" way (no serious Havok Behavior implementation): regular animation -> death -> ragdolls. Such stuff (and more btw) was implemented long time ago in ancient Unreal2.X games. Interestingly Gamebryo/LightSpeed has endogenous PhysX, not Havok, integration.
I would not spend time and efforts on this outdated "Oblivion type" eye candy. MW engine has many significantly more important problems to be fixed.

No, using Oblivion as a physics engine is not possible. Well, it might be, but it'd be too much of a pain to be worth-while.

Using Bullet, PhysX, or Havok as an external wrapper is possible, provided memory access to objects within Morrowind's memory space (easily handled by hooking a DLL into the process), but that requires a thorough knowledge of the format objects are held in memory and some kind of loading-interception to allow the collision meshes to be created. All that is possible, and if done, positioning would simply be handed over to the physics engine which might just be able to handle it. Of course, not nearly enough is known of the Morrowind engine internally to do this easily in the near future. But the concept is possible.

Yes.
