[RELz] Oblivion XP Update - Thread 3

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 3:10 am

Ok, I finally got to testing our "no text on the skill perk menu" bug... and I have no idea what's going on.

Test config:

OBSE 20 beta 6
MenuQue 9a

I got no text for Armorer and Athletics. All other skills were fine, including Light Armor, which had been reported to be a problem by omeletted. Also, for Armorer, not only did I not get any text, only a 0, I got a noise as if another menu had opened underneath the level-up menu and I couldn't click on the Done button. I had to hit Esc to bring up the main menu and exit the game.

So for those of you who have the display of the Skill Perks enabled, please save your game before levelling up. Hopefully it will be nothing more than getting a 0 instead of the perk description, but if you can't click the Done button, then you will have to exit the game. I will have to contact kyoma and Scruggsy and see if we can track down where the problem lies. I'm not even sure at this point.

I will test under OBSE 19b as well, but I wanted to report my findings so far.

Yes. Oblivion XP will overwrite some of the menus, so you need to install your UI first. Use OBMM or BAIN to install Ob XP. OBMM has a script which will ask which UI you are running. Oblivion XP 4.1.9 is set up as a BAIN compatible archive, so you just need to select the sub-package that matches your UI. If you are using BAIN, make sure you also select "has extra directories" if necessary (depends on the version of Wrye Bash you are using).

The download links for the new version are on the first post of this thread if you aren't running it already.

great! thanks for the speedy response! i don't know what I'd do without this mod. I just hated the vanilla lvl ups and all the other lvl up mods just didn't suit my tastes.

More testing of the Skill Perks issue.

Test config:
OBSE 19b
MenuQue 9a

This time the text was displayed properly for all the skills. However when raised Athletics to Journeyman level, Oblivion crashed when the Skill Perks menu tried to open. No idea why.

See above for the results under OBSE 20 beta 6.

Still investigating - I will keep you posted.

More testing of the Skill Perks issue.

Was stuck in a dungeon and got frustrated, so decided to run a quick test on the perk thing too with a new character. Using obse20b6 and Menuque 9a. Now to make things more confusing..

Athletics, no text for perk 25, 50, 75. 100 was fine
Armorer, no text for 75. 25, 50, 100 were fine
Light armor, no text for 100 (what I had reported before). 25, 50, 75 were fine.

All other skills were fine. Odd eh. Oh, this was with my normal mod load out, not just Oblivion XP.

And a new issue, just confirmed that doing Daedric quests gave me XP 3 times. Once for reading a book, once for fame and once for completing the quest.

Thank you for that! That explains why I didn't catch these before. I had a high level character, so most of my skills were going to 100. My Light Armor for him was already at 100. When I did the new round of testing, I loaded up an earlier save, so most of my skills were going to 50. Now that's the definition of an intermittent bug if I ever saw one.

Do you know which Daedric quests are giving you credit for reading a book? The fame and quest completion are normal. There must be a quest that does something with menumode 1026 - which is what the script is doing to detect that a book or scroll is being read. Are you running kyoma's journal mod?

All the recent ones I did for sure, Clavicus Vile, Molag Bal, Meridia, Namira. Only noticed recently, so can't remember the others.

Yup! Darn, kyoma and I thought we had that licked  Ok, back to bug kyoma again. If you remove the journal mod, you won't get the reading book xp anymore when completing those quests. I'm surprised you don't get book reading xp for completing any quest, not just Daedric ones... Anyway, I'll have to ask kyoma about it.

Could you confirm: you don't get book reading xp for completing other quests, do you? Also, kyoma may want to know which version of Journal Mod you are using.

Oh, most curious. Will try without journal mod, but yeah it's just for Daedric quests for some reason. Version 3.2.1 hotfixed.

A couple of things:

First, I have uploaded a spreadsheet to the Nexus download page that will allow you to play with the levelling parameters and see the effects in the amount of XP needed to level. There are also two graphs - one that shows the default levelling rate and a second that will show the effect of the changes you make to the parameters. The spreadsheet is in OpenDocument format so you will need http://www.openoffice.org/. A recent version of Excel might be able to open it, but I'm not sure if the graph will work properly. OpenOffice is free.

Second, Scruggsy found the problem with the Skill Perks: some of the descriptions have percent signs in them! I can't believe I didn't see that... Oh well, getting old, or something. Anyway I will have a fix out shortly...

Percent signs are used for formatting strings, so when they were showing up in the descriptions without the proper parameters accompanying them, the text wasn't displayed or Oblivion would crash.

Deactivated journal mod and went back to a save just before completing Clavicus' quest. Still getting reading book XP, so guess it's something else.

Glad you've got the perk thing sorted. ^_^

Ok, I'll see if I can reproduce that. I haven't done any Daedric quests in my current game yet.

Congratulations to the release of 4.1.9. You even fixed the issue with the skill perk text not showing up. That`s awesome!

Do you already have somebody to translate OblivionXP to german? I could do that for ya.

Welcome back - hope you had a nice vacation! Nope, nobody has stepped up to do a German translation yet, so if you would like to do one, that would be fabulous. Danke.

...snipped...

It's working fine: you aren't getting points for reading a book, you're getting points for finding an artifact! I actually didn't think the rewards for artifacts were working and meant to check into it at some point. Anyway, it's just the strings that got mixed up. It should say "Found an artifact." not "Read a book." I was wondering about that, because "Read a book" isn't used. When you do read a book, Ob XP reports the title of the book. Also, you'll notice you get a LOT of points for this, more than what you get for book reading :D

So, when you complete a Daedric shrine quest, you get points for fame, completing the quest and possibly finding an artifact if one is awarded. I will fix the string so that it says "Found an artifact", as it's supposed to.

So I'll be releasing a bug fix soon and I'll include this one too (as well as the Skill Perks issue).

Ah, now that makes sense. ^_^ Thanks for the bug squashing. *waits for the next release*

4.1.9a has been released!

This is a minor bug fix release with the following fixes:

  • fixed problem with text display for some Skill Perks. No more crashes under OBSE 19b and no more "0" text under OBSE 20 beta 6.
  • on-screen log was listing wrong string when an artifact was found. On-screen log would say "Read a book" when it should have said "Found an artifact".
  • added missing Dark Brotherhood quest and added alternate ending for Fighters Guild quest. Discovered that points were not be awarded for Affairs of a Wizard and points would only be awarded for one of the possible endings for Unfinished Business.

Thanks to omeletted bringing these to my attention and for the thorough test reports. Also thanks to SelectivePants for the reports on the missing quests.

Glad to find the fix was already made. I downloaded the 4.1.5 version from the older upload on TESnexus recently, and I've been trying to level my character's athletics up to 25 in the menu, and it would just crash. Very gamebreaking.

That *is* what version 4-point-1-point-9a fixes, right? On the side, maybe go back to that upload and update the description to tell everyone to move on to the updated upload.

Not possible, because SirFrederik who is responsible for the older Oblivion XP has retired, he doesn`t even reply anymore as far as I know.
