Oblivion: Were You Disappointed When...

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 2:10 pm

Oblivion: were you disappointed when, after spending many hours searching for a good battle, you'd mostly find just one or two bandits to go up against, or perhaps just one lone wolf?

Aside from the quests, if you ever spend the time just wandering around Oblivion, you'll find it very difficult to have a proper battle out in the open, as campsites rarely spawn more than 2 bandits at a time. Usually, it's just one bandit and a (weak) dog.

I've found it MUCH better to add an extra bandit or two (or sometimes more!) to each campsite as you really get more out of the experience. Same goes for the wilderness, I prefer fighting PACKS of wolves rather than just one. I can't imagine playing Vanilla Oblivion again, mainly because combat in VO is just too easy.

Thoughts?

With solid knowledge and experience, I agree that OB becomes an easy game. Rather than making Cyrodiil more dangerous or adjusting the difficulty slider however, I have simply gone to making my characters more vulnerable.

Buffy is my current char. She is a Bosmer Atronach mystic archer who lives with lots of 'gimps' including:
-dresses for fashion and fashion only
-won't touch a melee weapon or staff
-won't raise her strength or endurance
-is horrible with destruction damage spells like fire and lightning

What makes her work, besides loads of caution and being very good with her bow is: detect life, poison, weakness to poison, drain speed, mind control spells, bow blocking, staying in the shadows, capping her level at 20 or so by having several 'never use' major skills.

So. . . for her, two bandits or so in a camp is just fine. :P

Although we use several smaller mods, none of her key factors rely on mods.

And yes, probably our biggest past time is simply wandering Cyrodiil looking for waterfalls to play in and such.

Not really. I mean I started modding it after my first full play through as I found replay a bit stale because I knew where/what stuff was. I add OOO not only for a bump in difficulty but for new and different creatures and places to see, hand placed loot, etc. Added some equipment mods and house mods and graphical stuff to enhance things.

But my focus is rarely on battle, it's enjoyment of the entire game. I don't like things that are way too hard or things that are too easy. I like a middle of the road game so I can enjoy my surroundings and still find danger in appropriate places when I want to. Like Acadian, my characters usually have some really glaring weaknesses so what I get with OOO can be a bit over the top sometimes because I don't *build* characters I make them up as I go if that makes sense :)

As mentioned above mods can help. With OOO and MMM challenging battles are easier to find.

Also as mentioned above, it helps to put some self imposed restrictions on your character. A lot of people complain that Oblivion (and Fallout 3) in default mod and without mods is very easy. I think one reason Bethesda did that was to allow a wider choice of characters, and so you don't need a super character to do well. So you can do well with, for example, a rogue character with relatively low endurance, etc.

First time I played Oblivion (and for several months afterwards), I was scared OUT OF MY MIND whenever I walked the countryside. I mean literally...I'd jump in my seat and stuff. The littlest sound effects (wind blowing, for instance) would have me doing double-takes. I really dug this because the enemies all seemed so random.

My very first character (trial run-through, not serious yet) went up the hill towards Chorrol for instance, and encountered a rat. Well that character didn't last long, but I did the same thing with my second character (walked up the hill towards Chorrol) I fully expected the same rat would be in the same area, but it wasn't. There was a bandit instead. This is what i mean when I say it seemed random.

Now that I've been playing on and off for 1 1/2 years, and I know where alot of the camps and even where some of the creatures/bandits respawn, I agree with the OP, I'm craving to see a PACK of bandits or a PACK of wolves occasionally. Vanilla game, so I can't add OOO or MMM or whatever. <_<

Granted, there defintely are moments when I've got a wolf chasing me, and I'm low on health so I'm running, and ANOTHER wolf starts chasing me...then I happen to cross into a bandit camp, and now I've got FOUR enemies to contend with. WHERE IS THE IMPERIAL GUARD WHEN YOU NEED HIM? lol. ..

Hi, you do realise you can self-mod the game (using the construction set) to make creatures/bandits spawn in greater numbers, don't you?

That would depend on whether one is playing the game on PC.

Not possible. Renee plays on PS3.

I was merely making an observation, no need to go totalitarian on me.

I am disgusted!

You'll probably be both disgusted and warned if you try and defend yourself. If your post was deleted it was probably for good reason.

No, actually, it wasn't. I simply said Oblivion was only worth playing on the pc. That was all.

Oh, and by the way, you sound like you don't value liberty, freedom or non-conformity. If I was disgusted before, I am even more so now. Pathetic!

Well, I play Oblivion on 360. Granted that PC version is far superior, 360 is well worth while. In-fact, I've personally spent roughly 300 hours on Oblivion now.
If you pool together all the console players of Oblivion on this forum alone, you surely will get a substantial number, let alone add all the console Obivion players in the world.
Granted this number will be dwarfed by that by PC gamers, it still shows that console players have a presence.

Oh, and Mr. Freedom Fighter.. I do value Liberty, greatly so.
Thank you very much.

Doubtful. Considering you waded in here siding with the mod yet you did NOT read my original post.

First of all, I've read some of his posts before, and he's pretty reasonable. Secondly, I didn't side with anyone, I just
told you to not try and defend yourself, or they'll warn you, simply because they can.
And you would have to live with it, meaning you'd have to watch what you say, because the mods most certainly will.
It would just taint the fun of being on the forum. I was like a friend telling you to keep your head down from flying shrapnel.
If anything, I was on your side.
But given your attitude, I am no longer.

It actually sounded as if you were brown nosing by wading in and siding with the mod! lol, you even said he probably had good reason! How un-neutral was that?!

Also, I don't care if I upset mods just for standing for what's right, as they rarely, as a general rule of thumb, have the capacity to actually debate a given issue so instead use autocratic methods like post deletion, thread locking or banning (or all three).

So far, one of my posts was deleted for no good reason so I protested. Simple as that.

Closed for cause.
