Oblivion Won't Run On New Machine

Post » Thu Oct 20, 2011 2:16 am

Problem: Oblivion.exe *32 process stops responding after selecting "New Game", or "Load Game" (from saved point), or "Resume Game" (from last saved point). This is the base store bought Oblivion game not the GOTY package. I'm trying to install/use it for the first time on my new system.

Symptom: Game display freezes after selecting New, Load and subsequent save point, or Resume menu options. Win7 Task Manager depicts the above process as "Not Responding".
Of note: After initial install and launch the game can't detect hardware and defaults to "medium" 640x480 resolution.

System:
Lenovo K330-77273FU
- Win7 Home Premium 64-bit
- i7-2600 3.4GHz CPU
- GEFORCE GTX 460 -- Latest driver installed
- DirectX 11 installed
- 12Gb RAM
- 2TB primary data dive (NFTS), 1TB secondary data drive (NFTS)
- PLDS Combo Blu-Ray Disk Drive
- ACER P225W Monitor -- Of note: GTX460 DVI-D out is connected to a VGA converter cable

Failed attempted fix actions based on internet search for similar problem:
- Initially installed game in default Program Files (x86) directory -- Later removed and installed on my secondary hard drive in its own directory
- Only installed the Base game and Bethesda patch (1.2.0416).
- Tried the following (compatibility) modes: WinXP SP2/SP3. Vista/SP1/SP2, and Win7
- Disabled "Visual Themes" and "Desktop Composition"
- Set executable flag to "Run as administrator" and ran the game as such from the executable link on the hard drive and the disk drive
- Set Security Permission to "Allow" "Everyone" everything
- Disabled the Automatic check for Game updates option in Win7
- Set msconfig general option to Selective Startup
- Deleted My Games -> Oblivion *.ini files and RenderInfo.txt file(s) and launched manually changing screen resolution from 640x480 to 1680x1050 Widescreen (that's what my GTX460 defaults to for my monitor)
- Attempted both "Full Screen" and "Windowed" modes
- Numerous clean installs attempted with no prior saved data.
- Found an executable on-line that eliminated the need for the disk to run the game. Tried this just to factor out the Blu-Ray player with negative results. Rogue software was removed.

I'm an old guy that's not a gamer by heart, but the Elder Scrolls series is pretty special to me. I'm proud to say Daggerfall and Morrowind were the only PC games I ever completed with no help. I'm hoping I can say the same for Oblivion, but I sure need help getting it up and running on my new machine. Now I'm worried about my machine working with Skyrim. Any other ideas?

Thanks so much!

Tom

The hardware detection is normal. Your video card wasn't available when the game came out so it isn't recognized.

Nice system, it should have no trouble once we get it working. As a test, try a http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796 and see what happens.
