Oblivion won't save

Post » Fri Oct 29, 2010 9:28 pm

So recently I tried reinstalling Oblivion but it won't save. I press the save option and click a spot to save my game but it never saves, only auto saves work. I tried reinstalling and that didn't work. Is there a way to fix this?

Look in the same folder your saved games are kept in, I have Vista and my saves are in C:Users\Bradley\Documents\My Games\Oblivion, There is a file with your configuration settings named Oblivion. Make a copy and then delete this File. The game will create a new one when you restart and choose your graphics options. If this does not fix the issue then reinstall the copy and post your load order.
EDIT this is where you can make changes to your ini settings to disable the borders and take screenshots.

Are you on a PC or console, and what kind of mods do you have if you are on a PC? I know a console will reach a point where it does not have enough memory to make a new saved game.

Look at the pinned topic "FAQ-Read This First" I think it may be your answer.

I am having the same problem as well. I've tried the options in the pinned FAQ, but nothing has worked. Tried reloading to a much older save (where I was level 1) a, saved again and nothing. Autosave or quick save doesn't seem to work no matter what I do. Did the player.SetActorFullName trick, then used console to save via save [name] after but alas nothing. Any help would be appreciated.

It the folder Saves was set to read only, I have unchecked it. Loaded the game, and my most recent save, did a overwriting save, but again, the save is not registering. I will try to delete the configuration files within the My games/Oblivion folder with the Saves folder not set to read only and post my results.

Edit: Hmm, seems everytime I untick the "Read Only" box then click Apply, then open it back up via properites, Read only is checked again. Anyway I can fix this?

Edit2: After deleting the configuration files in My Games/Oblivion and loading the game, trying to save the game again, same problem, the save is not registering. Still having the issue of the Saves folder overriding my changes to Read Only even after applying as Administrator (Windows 7 64-bit)

Is it a black check, or kinda grey? I know windows uses that setting for some other stuff as well......

Open notepad, type a few words, then try and save it to your Saves folder.... See what happens.

It is a kinda grey check mark.
A notepad file saved just fine within the Saves folder.

There are currently only 5 saves. Not including autosave.bak

That's just odd......

Did you by any chance hit the Tab key when naming your character?

Try opening the console, and typing in:

player.SetActorFullName XXX

replace XXX with whatever you want your characters name to be.

It that doesn't help......

Does your game crash on exit?

As a last resort, try a thorough uninstall/reinstall..... Run the oblivion uninstaller, when it is done, delete the folders in my games, and the installation folder. Empty recycle bin, reboot, reinstall.

You can back up your saves first if ya like.

As stated previously, I have tried to do the player.SetActorFullName trick before, and then saving via console, to no effects. Just trying to resolve the issue without having to reinstall, but it seems like that may be my only option.

Well, you can write to the folder, so, it has to be a game issue...... Are you patched up to 1.2.0416? That is about the only other thing I can think of.

Yup, all patches are up to date as I use OBSE 19, which require all official patches.

So much for that thought......

I did a bunch of poking around in various places, and the most common problem seems to be the tab in the character name. But, you already tried the fix for that, and even consoling a save doesn't work..... the only other solution I saw (if you really wanna call it that...) was a guy loaded/exited the games a bunch of times (no specified number...) and it just started working again.

If you run vista, or win7, you could try turning off UAC for your oblivion install folder, see if that makes any difference......

Gotten any windows updates lately?

Nope, no windows updates. I'll go ahead and try turning off the UAC. I'll do a completely clean install and report back here if it worked or not.

When you reinstall, (if it comes to that.) put the game someplace like C:\Games\Oblivion. Don't put it in the Program Files directory. (the default location.)

So, I've done a totally fresh install and placed my save files back in the My Games/Oblivion/Saves folder, loaded up my save and I'm still having the same issue from before. Oblivion simply isn't saving my files. Arg

I had to create the folder Saves within that directory, saves appeared just fine.

Now I am having an issue I had over at in another topic, and the reason why I did a fresh install.
When I try to save my game, Oblivion simply doesn't accept it. I've done the console trick doing player.SetActorFullName [blah blah] as I've heard that might help, but to no effect.
I have also tried manually saving the game via console [save (file name)] It says saved, but a new one is not created. Anyone know how to resolve this? It has been pretty frusterating, especially after a fresh install.

What Hey You meant was place the game Oblivion into a new folder on your hard drive, never place a game you can add content to in C:\Program Files. After you click on yes to accept the EULA, you get a new screen where you can choose the path the installer uses to place Oblivion.
The default is C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion.
You can change this to C:\Games\Oblivion.
Using this method avoids UAC, and makes finding your indiividual games easier.
