Oblivions atmosphere

Post » Tue Feb 02, 2010 1:18 pm

So what do you think of the general atmosphere in the game while your out and about? Personally i think its very good, probably the best ive experienced in any game. These things are all opinion though and nothing more, but what do you think?

I agree, it's great. The towns, the wildlife.

And when for example it starts to rain, it feels really realistic.

I don't know, but I think "Very Good" is a pretty general idea. Be more specific. I like how the skies change when you come close to an oblivion gate and how it almost always it rains after the gate is closed. It makes me feel like the world just "fell on the ground and skinned it's knee"; like it just went through something horrible and its recovering. Am I making any sense?

Other than that the atmosphere is almost identical to the one in Morrowind, but this time it has better graphics...

I think it's brilliant, very dynamic and immersive. The weather feels real and you can genuinely feel as if you are a part of the game-world. When you are walking in the woods an you see a bear, the atmosphere changes to fit in with the moment.

It's the most beautiful game world I've seen. The trees, and the swaying grass. That night sky is awesome. The views from the high spots. Love it.

Yeah the night sky is... beautiful to say the least. You actually feel part of a different universe looking up at all the stars. I just think the whole game has a really good atmosphere and gives off a nice vibe, keeps me coming back to the now 4+ year old game (getting old now lol).

I think it's brilliant. The cool quiet, night air, the humming bugs in bravil, the endless snow in Bruma. How wet and moist it all is east of Leyawiin (don't know the region name :( ).

I like how you know a Gate is coming up by the redenning sky. The atmoshphere in the ayleid ruins is great. Just look up, far up and see the architecture -- and here the battle music as an angry lich tries to kill you.

Walk in the forests and discover a beautiful waterfall, a deep cool lake. Look back and see the white gold tower looming high, use it as a landmark to find your way home.....

Shame I have to basically turn grass off, but otherwise the graphics are really nice.

Don't forget the sunset, epic,I know its a game but the visuals are just stunning with the lighting. Also you can see the reflections of the mountains and trees in the lakes and everything.

and agreed the rain after the oblivion gates close is a reassuring feeling to me.

Yea, that makes total sense!

Oblivion is a video game, but in a way it's also a constantly moving painting. It's like taking a painting from the Realists period of style (19th century) and being able to walk around in it.

It's easily the prettiest game I've ever seen. Everything is so.....real. There's given things, like weather and infastructure, and then there's social conflicts such as racism and conflicting religious views. Each race has such detailed culture, and they all feel unique.

It depends. The towns are terrible. The Imperial City only has about 60 people walking around. Lol.

If you are talking about the world art and the audio tracks that help set the mood, then the game is fantastic.

I really love the lighting in the dungeons, the forests, the cloud-streaked sky and the awesome audio of Mark Lampert.

Love the atmosphere. To me, there are no more peaceful experiences in a current video game than wandering the grassy Colovian Highlands region on a sunny day with the mellow soundtrack playing and watching the sun rise/set over Anvil from atop the hills to the east of the city. B) There's plenty of ominousness and violence to be had, particularly before completing the MQ, but it's the sense of peace and wellbeing that I experience while playing Oblivion that sticks with me.

i honestly havnt played in months and ive been playin assassins creed again and watching and waiting 4 the new 1. so the main thing would b is its ok. i dont like it coz i never find randome things on the highways but wen im almost dead they all appear -.- one thing they should do is make the towns more realistic by having a posh part and middle class part and the poverty stricken areas

I was reminded of an interview with a Royal Marine after a fierce battle during the Falkland War. He said something to the effect, "Even the sky weeps for us today".

So yeah, makes sense to me. :)

I especially enjoy the sun setting behind the IC.

Or the sun rising for that matter. Especially after a long night journey in the wilderness.

Wasn't it Jeremy Soule that did the audio?

Everyone is very very like robotic no one really does anything to effect the surroundings. Look at Kvatch no one did anything to repair it, I would have paid thousands to maybe millions. Nothing no changes at all just the same through out the game no changes at all and that bugged me. I did all the mages, brotherhood, thief, and fighters guild wests. All I got was items.... I want results! Well thats not why we are here... Its ok... I do want them to talk more and be more active... I want beggars to beg other people and I want people to talk to them and give them something. As for the thieves guild I want items to be robbed for me because I am MOTHER [censored] BOSS! If I want a elderscroll I'm going to get a elderscroll if i want to get a necromancers staff or some random [censored] I'll get it. As for the mage guild I want the mages to gather around and I teach them and I get some dough from the sales. The Brotherhood I want them to kill people and I want to get some dough and items. Fightersguild uh idk make em train and I build a Fighters University.

It all feels very "dry" to me. The forest/countryside setting felt very generic compared to Morrowind. The way people look with the less-than-spectacular facegen faces. The sparse (instrumentally speaking) music. None of this stuff really flied with me.

I was never really in awe over the graphics back when it was released. The big open world with all the lush vegetation and distant (albeit very low-res) land was impressive at the time, but the problems mentioned above really brought down the experience. Then of course it suffered from the generally tasteless appliance of HDR (I always play with this thing off, I think it looks terrible) and overuse of normal/bumpmapping techniques (the textures for those also felt painstakingly low-res). Not to mention the general animation quality still leaving something to be desired. Thankfully we have a very dedicated modding community to take care of several of these problems.

It seems to be a general Bethesda problem. Technically they can spearhead next-generation graphics, but aesthetically they're not nearly on the same level.

I'm probably in the minority, but I vastly prefer Oblivion's atmosphere over Morrowind's. Morrowind felt very lonely and alien -- which is cool, but I enjoyed Oblivion much more. It's still the one of the only games I know where I feel totally immersed in the peaceful woods & fields and I can practically smell the grass and the flowers. It's no "dark fantasy" like The Witcher etc. and in a way, that may be why I still enjoy it so much after all this time. Dark is atmospheric, yes, but it can get dull after a while. Cyrodiil feels vibrant and alive and a place where I'd like to live!

To me vanilla Oblivion always felt like it was missing any atmosphere. It just felt too generated. NPCs had no personality's except for the silly things they said. Also the way they speak with eachother adds nothing to the atmosphere: as soon as you stop and listen to two NPCs talking you realize it is just a game. Cities looked plain and dull (tough graphically looking very good, it was just the manner the city was build).

Luckily the creators of Oblivion, in their wisdom, added the ability to mod the game. Which created wonderful mods like Unique Landscapes and Bananasplit's Better Cities. These two mods really add a lot of atmosphere to certain places.

Please don't get me wrong. I don't hate Oblivion. I have enjoyed (and still enjoy) playing it for many hours. The gameplay is very good. A lack of atmosphere does not mean I do not like a game.
