Name: OBSE Installer
Version: 1.0
Date: 25/05/2010
Category: Utilities
Author: InsanitySorrow

=================
Requirements:
=================

.Net Framework 2.0

=================
Description:
=================

For most of us Oblivion Script Extender (OBSE) is easy to install and takes not a moment to do so, for us it's like installing a mod.

But for newcomers or those less experienced than us this may well be a difficult task, or even one they're unsure of. OBSE Installer has been
developed to help the newcomers or those who maybe unsure of how to correctly install OBSE. With a couple of simple clicks the user can install OBSE
effortessly.

OBSE Installer does NOT come with OBSE, you will still need to download that from:

http://obse.silverlock.org/

=================
Details:
=================

On startup the OBSE Installer will attempt to Auto-Detect your install, if it does not manage to do this there is a manual option too. The app is extremely easy
to use:

1) Start the App
2) If the App cannot detect your install, use the manual button to set a path to your Oblivion Folder
3) Point the OBSE Files path to the folder containing the OBSE Files
4) Click the Install Button

There is a log screen as well to let you know if something goes wrong, I.E missing path for example.

Note: OBSE Installer will also install the documentation as well (ReadMe ect), These will be placed:

Oblivion/Data/Docs/OBSE

=================
Installation
=================

1. Extract ISOBL.EXE and ReadMe from the Archive
2. Run OBSE Installer.EXE

=================
Un-Installation:
=================

1. Delete EXE

Thank you! By less experienced, you mean ME! The first version of obse I installed was fairly recently (v 18). I had no idea what I was doing, but it seems I got it done ok, because a couple mods that require obse I was able to install via obmm and they work. I was not at all looking forward to the next time I had to upgrade it. If it involves more that using obmm to create an archive and omod, I need help! This will be most helpful!

Thank you for uploading this. I will check it out and link it on my site. this will be extremely helpful. Could this be extended to install some of the popular OBSE plugins (i.e., Pluggy, Elys' USV, OSR, etc.)?

That would be awesome. At the moment, however, I cannot figure out how to get this utility to install OBSE, haha... Which path or folder is it looking for? I've tried the extracted OBSE folder ("obse_0018" in my case) the "src" folder, the "src\obse" folder, and the folder containing this extracted folder.

Click the little button next to the OBSE Files text box, this wil prompt you to point to where the OBSE files are, point it to your obse_0018 folder. Click Install :)

It's not working. I'm running Windows XP. I've tried extracting the files to the Oblivion folder, putting it on the same HDD as the Oblivion install as well.

Works perfectly fine for me :shrug:, Okay quick suggestion, extract the files into a single folder, so there are no sub folders other than the SRC folder, like so:

Had a feeling someone would say that :lmao:

v1.1 WIP

Added:

  • Support for popular Plugins

Fixed:

  • Removal of Auto-Detect, relies on manual path setting
  • Adjusted Code, should work better now
  • All paths are stored internally and loaded on app start, can be reset

Hi, InsanitySorrow.
Just today downloaded your enhanced normal maps and enjoy them enormously.
Actually, I run 12 things of yours in my game as we are talking.

However, OBSE is 3 files to copy/paste in the right folder. It hardly can be less complicated, really.
Unless you make it selfupdating program tracking the latest versions of OBSE and the various olugins... Still, am sure some will like it as much as I enjoy your replacing things.

Now, your wonderful replacements... Gold Goldbrand, eh? With flames... yeah, gimme more!

Glad you like them :D

The Installer App is directly aimed at newcomers or those that are less experienced with Oblivion mods :)

That's odd :huh: , I think I may have fixed it though :)

Would you mind testing the next version?

It utterly depresses me that this was ever necessary or would even be worth the download to anyone. It's seriously not hard at all to install... All you need to do is read the (rather short) readme! Sigh.

Anyway, thank you, Insanity Sorrow, for your impressive effort to reduce the number of stupid questions on these forums.

I hope this helps to avoid those questions in the future and help those who struggle with installing OBSE :)

If you get it working right, and you can include proper support for making it work with Steam, that might be a benefit to Steam users. They seem to often run into some sort of difficulty with OBSE for some reason.

Even when it is installed correctly, it seems as though a number of Steam users have trouble with OBSE v18...

I think there's a setting in Steam itself that has to be changed as well. That's a common issue, I think.

"Enable Steam Community In-game" must be turned on for it to work properly.

As long as they point to their Oblivion directory like others they should be fine. The app already asks if the user is using steam and if so copies the DLL file, I'm unsure if I can adjust that setting though.

Is that the exact console command Steam users need to use?

It's not a console command.
Steam > Settings > In-Game > Check the box marked "Enable steam community in-game".

I accidentally figured out what had happened to the OBSE files that your installer placed. They ended up in the Bethesda Softworks folder. I was really confused at first because all of the files in that folder started with "Oblivion". I was thinking: What is this "OblivionData" folder for? Did I mess up my Oblivion install? Why isn't anything broken? (haha, I can hardly keep myself together while I type this, haha... sorry...Ahem...) Yeah, so the deal is that whatever the installer did the file renaming thing did not work out. The other "Oblivion" files were: "OblivionOBsixX". I guess those were supposed to be "Oblivion\OBsixX", haha. I have not tried the updated version. I'll see how that goes...
