Obsidian to work on future Fallout title?

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 9:48 am

Chances are if your part of this forum you have played, beaten, and yet played again the latest title in the Fallout series, New Vegas. Developed by Obsidian entertainment, who are comprised of some of the members of Black Isle, the original developers of the series, the game made many additions to the game, doing a good job of returning to the feel of the original games. Now that the title is finally done with, do you think there is a possiblity that either the next title, or a future title, will yet again be handled by Obsidian? What are your opinions of another Obsidian developed title? I for one think they did a great job of fixing many of the issues that possibly disconnected long time fans of the series with the re-boot that was Fallout 3. Overall I thought the game was much stronger than Fallout 3 in most ways. Comparably, it was just a stronger, better designed, and simply more engaging experience than Fallout 3, albeit a buggy game at time of launch, though wasn't Fallout 3, and most large scale rpg's for that matter. Anyway, I would love to see Obsidian's name on future Fallout titles, possibly a Infinity Ward meets Treyarch style of development cycles, where each company handles the next title in the series, with Obsidian possibly taking on the role of developer when Bethesda is handling the elderscrolls titles. Well, what do you think?

It will probably be all Bethesda and I hardly believe that Bethesda is just going to hand it over but I would like Bethesda to consider doing a joint project with Obsidian.
And at least work on the games together.

Bethesda has said they picked up the license because they wanted to make Fallout games so I'm sure we'll see future titles from them. Bethesda is large enough to maintain staggered developement on two titles so they an work on an Elder Scrolls game and a Fallout game at the same time - they did it with Oblivion and Fallout 3, and Fallout 3 and Skyrim.

As for Obsidian, I think there's a good chance of this happening but until we hear something we don't have anything to really go on. I would say a second Fallout game from Obsidian is extremely unlikely before we see one from Bethesda, if only because FONV was the last game to use the TES IV/FO3 engine.

Nope I want BGS to work on the next couple Fallout titles. Obsidian did a good job with New Vegas but I think that BGS will fix the flaws that both Fallout 3 and New Vegas had.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's another Obsidian's after Fallout 4.

I would prefer Obsidian works on the rest, unless Bethesda takes an example from Obsidian and makes more of a Fallout game.

well bethesda will make fallout 4 without a doubt...but obsidian might make another one, i doubt it will be in a desert, which i really did not care for. they would prob make lots of improvements so i would feel ok with them making another one, but if it wasn't better than new vegas, i prob wouldn't except them to make a game i liked after that, i want lots of combat, random encounters and plenty of exploring with lots of big dungeons and buildings, like bethesda does.

I think it's highly likely that Obsidian would develop future Fallout titles. Fallout: New Vegas was very successful and overall the fanbase is pleased except a few disgruntled old fans, and a few Fallout 3 fans expecting New Vegas to be like 3.

What would be nice, as Gabe pointed out, is if Bethesda and Obsidian were to work together closely on a joint-project. In fact I would be thrilled if that was Fallout 4. I think both companies have plenty to teach each other.

Yeah, I think it's safe to say Bethesda will be the main developer on Fallout 4, but it would be nice if they consulted Obsidian on a few things.

If Obsidian ever makes another Fallout game for Bethesda it'll likely be after Fallout 4, and meant to shorten the wait between Fallout titles while they focus on the 6th Elder Scrolls game. But, you have to consider the fact that between Oblivion's release and now, Bethesda's team has grown from 60 to 100 people. If they maintain growth like that, by the time Fallout 4 is released they may not even need Obsidian to make another game for them as they'll have more than enough people to do it themselves.

This. I hope Obisidian is hired to do the bulk of the writing for future Fallouts including Fallout 4.

Because they have better writers and know how to add a true-to-the-originals feel to modern games, if BGS can learn how to do this from Obsidian, i am all for it, but until i see proof, i want Obsidian on board for at least writing and character design.

60 to 100 people.

Part of me hopes those 40 people are hardcoe Fallout fans, if they have anything to do with story and world design.

dont forget though that NV is basically FO3 with a different story. Its bethesda's game there using. They had the opportunity to learn from bethesda's mistakes. I think FO4 will be the best so far

I don't get the point of this. Mako Vlazkov was talking about the writing. We all know New Vegas has the same Engine as Fallout 3. We all hope FO4 will be the awesome :foodndrink:

Like a lot of others have said the best fallout game would be one where Obsidian did the writing, character design, settlement design, etc. and Bethesda built it all

do you not think bethesda's capable of doing those things itself? i know the characters and voice acting needs to improve but surely bethesda's capable of that? I dont think the NV story was that great either

Are they capable? yes

Beth are getting better at writing with each installment imo

But if both companies worked to their strengths we would have a monster of a game on our hands

That is a matter of opinion, yes, but it was much more open and gave the player more freedom to do what they want without having to blow off the MQ or mod it, that is what is great about NV's story, not only is it well written, it is very open and free.

as you say its a matter of opinion. Having more options is great but the story in NV didn't really grab me, so i probably didn't appreciate them. I still dont see why bethesda needs obsidian to make a better fallout. if fallout 4 is no better than 3 then maybe.

I enjoy the differences between F3 and FNV; I would like to see Bethesda make a game in their East Coast mileau, then one from Obsidian in a couple years over in the West. Each in their own styles. If both teams worked concurrently (please let Obsidian not be under such a time crunch), we'd have a game about every two years.
Everybody wins.*

If Obsidian is to work on future titles, I'd like them to handle writing/story aspects and leave world building to Bethesda, if possible.

Like I said in the FO3 board. I want Obsidian to do the writing, quest design, and the various towns. Bethesda should do the exploration aspects.
