Odd beeping noises from speakers whenever sound is played

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 8:53 am

So, about a month ago or so, I began hearing continuous beeping noises coming from usually my right speaker (or right headphone) on my PC whenever I played sound, such as when I would play a video. When I stop any sound, it continues to beep for about five seconds, then stops. This problem doesn't occur all the time, but when it does, I restart the computer and the beeping stops.

What could this be? Defective speakers? I got my motherboard replaced over a month ago as well, so could something be going on there? Maybe a problem with the sound card (I hope not...)?

Eh, this time restarting the computer didn't fix it...

To clarify, the noise isn't a sound from Windows, it's a static-like rapid clicking noise. Also, when I got my motherboard replaced, my soundcard was moved to a different PCI slot. I read that my problem may be that I need to move back my soundcard to the original PCI slot, and then reinstall drivers.

I had this problem a long time ago with some desktop speakers. Turns out that the speakers didn't have good enough EMI shielding and the new monitor was interfering with them.

I also had it happen to another PC when the PC wasn't getting enough power from the outlet.

Am I reading it correctly that it is making this sound with both your headphones and your speakers? If so, it seems unlikely that it is a speaker problem. Are you plugging your headphones and speakers in the same port? If you are, try plugging them in a different port. Another way to test this is to plug in your speakers to another computer. I'd run a program like audacity and set it to record "what you hear". This will record what the computer is actually outputting in terms of sound. Then save the file and play it on another computer. If it isn't there you know it is hardware related, if it is present you know it is software related. If you have an integrated sound card on your motherboard you can try removing your dedicated sound card. Are there any programs running that could make this sound? I know I've been stumped a number of times when I kept hearing a sound and it turned out to be an AV or messaging program.

I tested with another pair of speakers, which doesn't have the problem on our other computer, but the clicking/beeping noise happens on this computer with the other speakers. So the problem isn't speaker-related.

And yeah, the problem occurs with both speakers and headphones.

Also, sound, such as from videos, plays normally, it's just the clicking over it.

Right now, my headset is unplugged, along with the microphone.

As for any other programs, no. I haven't installed any programs that coincided with this sound.
