Odd depth perception while gaming in the dark

Post » Sat May 17, 2014 7:45 pm

Anyone else get odd depth perception problems while gaming ( or just looking at a screen) in the dark? I'm not even sure if depth perception is the right description for it.

Basically the feeling is I'm further from my screen than I really am and I feel almost removed from my body... or taller... I don't know. It's really odd. As I'm typing this, I feel like I'm a couple feet from my laptop, even though it on my lap... It's actually quite a cool feeling, but it's just weird and distracts me from my gaming.

nothing like that but I do get a slight headache if I'm playing a game at night---I use the light source from either the hallway or kitchen and I don't get 'em.

Get a http://www.google.com/search?q=tv%20lamp&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=R_LqUd-WDIaE9QTkloDICA&biw=1024&bih=583&sei=TPLqUZmIL5O68wTsxoHQCg. Personally, I have a black jaguar TV lamp and it helps to prevent eye straining.

Also, as you get older your eyesight gets progressively worse.

You don't have the same background cues in your peripheral vision to set your spatial position.

Yup, you can get headaches if you game while in the dark. I eventually had to start turning on the light near the piano to give me something to game with. The light from my monitor, both CRT and LCD, were starting to get to me.

Yeah, it's a common occurrence for many people.
I've never noticed it with myself, but my friend always has to have a bit of light in the room when we watch a movie or play games at night.

As CCNA describes, it has to do with visual clues your eyes/brain is receiving... or in this case, not receiving. It affects different people in different ways, just like motion sickness does.

I haven't noticed specifically when it happens, but mainly I'll find sometimes when I stare at something for a while (be it my monitors at work or just falling into a trance while starting at nothing), I can start feel like I'm zooming out of my body and spinning; it's pretty cool.

Playing Portal and sitting can also mess with your head if you've decided to put a portal on the wall and on the ground and just fall into them over and over again.

When I'm in front of my PC, I always have to turn my desk lamp when it gets dark, cause my eyes start to itch, and I feel something "wrong" when playing.

I also can't watch TV in a dark room - especially when the movie has plethora of flashing lights, strobes etc, it makes me little dizzy.

It only really happens to me while gaming, though I usually have the TV running on mute while gaming anyways, so that helps out.

I never game in the dark, and I can't no matter how hard I try. I just don't like to. Either because the nature of the game is too scary or the game is overall too bright.

I have to play during the day with light coming in.

However, I like to watch movies in pitch black darkness, and regularly browse the internet in my room, which is nearly always dark. I don't know how it can be bad, but I get the feeling that light from tablets and other electronics is bad for your skin.

Just a feeling I get. Especially when the light is very bright and the room is very dark. I swear, I can almost feel the light on me.

On a somewhat related topic, for general browsing late at night I highly recommend Flux to everyone. It makes the screen less bright at late hours, which is easier on the eyes and makes it easier to sleep if you go to bed right after staring at a monitor.

Be sure to turn it to slow transition speed so the transition from bright to is not so sudden.

I don't know if it works with gaming.

Also be careful with turning it off at midnight to see if it's actually working, it's going to be bright.
