Odd problem with armor/clothing textures

Post » Wed May 11, 2011 5:29 am

I can't explain why this is happening, but when I've bought some items recently from the Apachii Goddess Store, a few showed up on my character. When they were dropped on the floor, however, they were just rectangles marked "Goddess Store," and when those were put in my companions' inventory, the relevant body parts vanished. Now, they were fine previously: everything I've bought from the shop showed up perfectly, and I've had it running for months. Obviously, something changed in my setup.

I'vetried reinstalling the AGS, but no difference. Any ideas? Here's my mod list:

I have always had problems with AGS. I use to use an earlier version than the current ones released and it seemed more capable at handling the meshes/textures. I recently got the newest version (there are some AMAZING weapons in that store) and nearly everything was either missing a texture or mesh..upon uninstalling and re installing, I had a different result.
I can't help much, but I recommend possibly trying an earlier version and see if it changes anything (start crossing out what the problem source is)

I've never had this problem up until now, and the same things that worked before, no longer do. Besides, if it's simply a missing texture, shouldn't it show up as purple when placed on a body? Instead, the companion or mannequin's body part underneath that simply vanishes. That's very odd.

It seems to be mostly the case with chests and legs. I don't know what to make of it. But I'm not blaming Apachii, since the same things looked great when displayed in Qquix's Diviine Elegance Showroom. Something's changed.

well it was my best guess, though I am not particularly sure, or even have a general idea what could cause it.

I can say you have a TON of mods though!
perhaps try repositioning it in the load order (I suggest not taking advice from me unless you are in a desperate time, may I be your last resort)

No offense, but I have tried reinstalling and repositioning the Apachii Store. As well as re-running my Bashed Patch repeatedly, or leaving it out, or saving, exiting, and reloading--which shouldn't even matter when it's only a problem with textures. If that's all it is. I've also reinstalled Roberts 4.0. Again, no difference.

Hopefully, someone has an idea why these armors, especially legs and chest elements, when dropped, are just tokens for the Goddess Store, and when applied to a companion or mannequin, make that body part vanish. It doesn't sound like missing textures.

Invisible textures could result from a bad texture path (i.e., texture paths starting with a drive letter instead of the subfolder in the textures folder or texture paths containing the wrong slashes.) If you are not seeing a missing mesh icon, I would look to the textures. Check the plugin with TES4View. Check any item that has the invisibility issue.

Yet the same items that are invisible on companions and mannequins appear perfectly normally on my own character, both when seen while in inventory mode, and after closing the inventory, in 3rd person. That shouldn't happen, if it's an issue with a bad texture path, would it?

EDIT: I just did a FormID on a few of these. Model location is pointing at a generic NIF in a meshes subdirectory, so I suppose the problem is with a mesh. Which is weird, because, as I wrote above, they appear on my character perfectly well. I'd think that if the mesh were messed up, my character would show it, too.

And here's the thing: I've looked in the nested subdirectory for the meshes of an item that has a generic mesh (ie, wrong) mesh in the game, and it looks perfectly right in the Oblivion meshes/armor/apachii/dragon subdirectory. It's as though something were overriding its attempt to look there, turning that subdirectory invisible, and returning it a message of "there's no such mesh here."

Oops, I kind of misspoke. You need to open the relevant meshes is NifScope or a similar tool to check the texture paths on the mesh.

There are no BSAs in the mod. Would have made it too easy to solve, eh?

I've never done that. What do I need to do, and can I keep it from getting painful?

I'm convinced something has changed in my setup that's doing this. I'm just not sure what it could be, since the Apachii Goddess Store stuff worked perfectly before now. I simply can't pin the problem down to a specific period of time and thus specific changes, because I've been adding stuff and working on this mod without playing for a while. (And no, it's not the mod. That wouldn't have anything to do with it.)

I do not model, so I do not know how to do much else outside of expanding the tree to see the texture paths. I do not even know how to make them load in the utility I use, honestly. Try double-clicking on one of the NIF files. OBMM installs one of those types of tools, so something should come up in the recommended list. I cannot remember what utility I actually use. If it has teal-ish background, that is not the one I use.

Edit: \http://niftools.sourceforge.net/wiki/NifSkope is indeed the tool of which I was thinking, and I think that that is the one installed with OBMM, not sure though.

Yet if it's the mesh, why does the same item appear without problems when worn on my character, and seen in the third person? Logically, if it's the mesh, it should always look bizarre. But it only does when dropped (the item turns into a rectangular tablet, marked Goddess Store), or worn by somebody else. I'll do what you suggest--but it still seems like something else.

Tried opening it with OBMM. Was told it couldn't; unsupported file type. Just to be sure, I tried it with other NIFs that aren't a problem. Got the same message.

Well, that may be that mod's default GND mesh if the author did not feel like creating those types of meshes for every item. The GND file is the "world space" mesh, in a manner of speaking. That is necessary for the "folded pants" look and so on... Maybe that is just how the mod works. Did you see anything overriding AGS's records? You should be able to see the GND mesh file path in TES4View for each item.

If I use FormID, I do find it pointing to a generic GND mesh under Meshes/armor/apachii, just as you suggest. But the actual NIF for the object is Meshes/armor/apachii/Dragon/DragonCuirass.nif. So it's there, in the right place--but for some reason, it's not being read properly when "seen" off my character. It's as though something were stopping the game from drilling down through all those subdirectories, on some items, not all of them.

That .NIF file is for wearing on the character. APG just may not have _GND.NIF files, and the author may have thought that that generic mesh was more informative. Is your character male? Does the cuirass show up on other males? There may not be a female version for many items.

That's the ticket. And the confusing thing is that parts of the same outfit *do* have both male and female versions, while others don't. So for example, the Dragon Helmet and gauntlets are six-neutral (perhaps there is no separate m/f area for head and hands?), while the cuirass and pants for this (and several other) APG outfits are female-only. Whew.

Thanks. :) That's clear something that had me really concerned, there. With a modlist as large as mine, and so many things that could go wrong, I was sure something had. You really helped out, Tommy.

"Tommy" is a new one, haha. I am glad you have things all sorted out now. I will make a problems page out of this, even though it is not really a problem. I use Robert's bodies, both of them, and I have definitely run into the disappears on females issue. Sometimes; however, it is simply a mistake. I think the bad dwemer cuirass I had my problem with was the bad texture path on one of the dwemer cuirasses. It was from one of the Robert replacers for OOO or something like that. Even though body replacers can make the game much more easy on the eyes, they do add an extra workload to ensure the game stays "together."

Happy gaming!
- Tomlong75210

Edit: Those clothes and armors should have a male-only flag or something if females should not wear them and vice a averse.

Edit: Those clothes and armors should have a male-only flag or something if females should not wear them and vice a averse.

Agreed, but there's nothing like that in the shop. And Apachii's other major contribution, the Heroes Shop, has both male and female armor/clothing. To be fair, all the merchants in AGS are female, but that doesn't necessarily equate to female-only armor. Especially since some of the cuirasses *can* be worn by males and females.

Still--it's an incredible shop, meticulously detailed, with imaginative add-ons (like a series of books briefly discussing the goddesses in question), and tons of merchandise. I'll gladly accept the inconsistencies, despite the headaches this one caused, in exchange for so much effort and so much result.

When I was using Exnem (the more original Eyecandy version) I also downloaded that mod. I had plans to download the Heroes Shop, but Robert came out with his female body before it was released I think...That was a general comment, certainly not targeted to AGS. Most of the time when I run into this issue, it is just an overlooked texture path in a NIF file.

Sorry, should not have posted right before bed.
Tomlong's website gives the wiki's info in a more straightforward manner but forgot that his BSA info did not include ArchiveInvalidation.
I was attempting to refer you to how how the game wouldn't be able to find a defined path due to how BSA loading can mess with directories if you did not set entries in the ArchiveInvalidation.txt file.
Looks like Tomlong explained the other possibility quite well (ie the Modmakers possible mistake).

You do not need http://sites.google.com/site/oblivionpoinfo/installmods/archiveinvalidation when using OBMM, and I do have that information on the website. It is not in the guide's BSA loading info because that guide assumes you are using BAIN (or even OBMM) and it uses BSA Redirection (as does OBMM.)
