Odd Sleeping Habits

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 3:53 am

Well I haven't made a thread since the new format, so I figure I am due.

Every night, the only way I can go to sleep is if I drink one bottle of water and put in one of my tv box set dvds and let it play in the background while I lay in the bed and try to go to sleep. I know that isn't very energy efficient, so I put my tv and ps3 on a 90 minute timer. This ritual usually works like a charm. But it annoys the hell out of my brother who comes home on the weekends, and shares a room with me. He requires complete silence to go to sleep.

I have noticed that almost everyone has their own before sleep habit, so what is yours?

Brush teeth, make sure chihuahuas are tucked into their bed, They like to be covered up in their dogbed. For they are notorious tunnelers, so they have their own blanket.
Otherwise, they end up burrowing in our bed, and since the hubs and I sleep au nauturel, that's not something we want.

I've recently discovered herbal teas that aid in falling asleep. They're pretty good. So reading and sipping tea is how I fall asleep. I'm such a light sleeper, any noise prevents me from sleep. (Which can be quite tough at times)...

I usually cant fall asleep until around 1 am in the first place. Even then, I need the tv or my ipod to fall asleep.

Take off duvet and pillows and check for spiders. You may think it's stupid, but I've found a few in my time.

Melatonin or any thing that causes ("causes" may not be the right word) your body to produce melatonin works like a charm.

Hmm...I always urinate before I go to bed, problem with that, is I often play my DS for hours laying in bed before I finally fall alseep. It's only when I'm truly well and exhausted that I can manage to fall asleep without my DS or PSP.

Might work. Some of us are very stubbornly attached to our insomnia.

I say goodnight to my Twilight posters (each one individually) and then go send threatening text messages to Taylor Lautner.

(This was a joke. Just making that clear).

I lift my blankets, and always wipe of my bed. Everything next to my bed (on my night stand) has to be perfectly straight. None of my cats can be in my room. I also have to have my blankets arranged in a certain way.

I can't sleep without earplugs anymore. And if I read anything too long before I go to bed, I start having dreams about what I was reading, and I get very restless. I was reading some comic making fun of pokemon for about an hour and a half last night, and I kept dreaming about pokemon.. haha

I feel normal.

It feels... odd.

I just go to my bed, take off anything on my feet, then get under the covers, roll onto one side, and fall asleep. I can't fall asleep on my back, though.

I need an extra strength Melatonin tablet if I want to get to sleep at a reasonable time. While I lay in bed I generally read a book or browse the web on my phone for a while, before finally trying to go to sleep.

I have to have Nick at nite on, volume set to 4, and drink an entire soda before I go to bed. And I must be under my Pokemon blanket that I've had since I was 8. I just cannot sleep without it, not sure why.

Watch one episode of Anime, then get into bed and go to sleep. I usually mentally shut down everything too, one by one. I used to clap my hands together and say good night to my desktop mascots, and whoever was on my wallpaper, but I have to actively hide powerlevels like that in the presence of other humans like my roommate.

Speaking of which I get livid when my roommate leaves his TV on all night long, and then snores like a swamp beast that mated with a jet engine on top of it. Have to take off one of the blankets because my body heats up from the anger and blood pressure. I've never seen a person that contorts his neck so much when he sleeps to cause such an unabating and malignant snore. :stare:

Oh how living with other humans tests my urges to strangle them.

I'm a bit of a night owl, and I'd say on average I get about 5-7 hours of sleep (during the week). When I finally do curl up, I put the military channel on, turn the volume down low, and just let my body slowly relax into sleep. I don't really like sleeping though, I'd rather be up having fun or doing something entertaining

It depends on the night for me. Sometimes I watch TV or a movie on my laptop before I fall asleep. Or possibly read some stuff on my Droid. I usually only get about 4-5 hours of sleep a night which works for me. (Though tonight my entire schedule is messed up, came home at 3:30, fell asleep at 5 and just woke up at 9:30, so who knows how this is going to go)

I have intermittent insomnia, so...some nights it's pretty bog standard brush teeth, climb into bed, turn out light and pass out.

Other nights it's more tossing and turning. I might sit up and read a book for a bit. If my insomnia's really bad, though, I'll go and make a small cup of hot chocolate and drink that before trying to sleep again. For some reason that always puts me right to sleep.

I'll get into bed, and lie on my left side. When i'm ready to sleep i'll turn to my right side and fall asleep.

Weird, i know.

Honestly, I'm such a slob, that when I do actually get around to cleaning my room, it bothers me. It's not dirty enough. I actually have to go out of my way to put something on the floor, or where it doesn't belong to make it feel more like home.

And I also feel terrible for people when I stay in hotels. :( I don't know why I'm such an anti-clean freak, but I attribute it to my dad. He was a pack-rat of epic proportions, I guess I just got so used to having things everywhere, that when I can actually see my floor, it just doesn't feel like my house.

Recently I've sat up straight and stared at my two arms until my vision is blackened and I drift off, it works suprisingly.

I don't sleep. I wait. :ninja:

Seriously, though, I'm an extremely light sleeper, so I have to have a constant, static noise (like a fan) and earplugs in order to fall asleep. Even then, any sound out of the ordinary will wake me up instantly. :toughninja: This make sleeping through the night...well, I haven't actually done that since I was 12.

My night time routine is the same every night:

1. Brush teeth (so my gums won't try to take revenge on me in the morning)

2. Turn on fan (for the static noise)

3. Check nightstand and ensure favorite set of throwing knives is there (not kidding)

4. Stretch (doing so relaxes me greatly)

5. Climb into bed and insert earplugs

6. Attempt to sleep (doesn't always work)

I don't know why, but I can only sleep while laying on my right side or on my stomach. This little quirk made sleeping...interesting...when I cracked three of my ribs at one of my jobs. And yes, all three were on my right side. Awesome.

Every year, I go through a bout of insomnia. When that happens, I don't worry about it. I just lay there and enjoy the opportunity to relax. I've found that I'll be much more rested and alert if I just lay there and relax instead of doing something like watching TV, playing a game or even reading. And no, sleep aids don''t help at all. They actually make me feel groggy and exhausted the next day.

No ritual for me. My sleeping times shift though. Sometimes I get on a schedule where I stay up until 4am then it pushes to 7am and I sleep all day, then I get back on a regular day schedule for a few weeks, then drift back into a night owl schedule because of insomnia or driving myself with some project or study. My wife can't sleep with me any more because she still works and wakes up very easy, (but otherwise we have very good intimacy, so don't assume too much there), so I'll fall asleep on the couch watching TV and/or I'll get up and get in my bed and just crash without having to have warm milk or some security blanket to hug. I have been known to fall asleep contently on the living room floor also. I basically sleep with no problem for however long I like or need to.

I have a cuppa tea/Milo
then I take a shower
urinate (not in the shower, though)
"air" my pillow
read my daily devotions booklet
pray
Lie on my stomach, for a while, turn to my side, lie on my back, then turn to my side again
THEN . . . I imagine what I can improve on my fan-fic, Rping, or just dream up a story to help me sleep.
