Official: Beyond Skyrim TESVI #38

Post » Sat Jun 14, 2014 10:37 pm

This thread is for ideas and suggestions for future Elder Scrolls games, and to keep all the discussion in one series of threads.

We also have an official thread specifically for http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1501185-tes-vi-location-and-setting-speculation-6/ suggestions for future games.

Now that Skyrim has been released the number of suggestions and ideas for the next ES game are starting to show up. We have a long way to go before we get another ES game and all topics like this will be closed and either transferred or referred to this one.
Please keep any discussion of Skyrim in the correct forums.

Continuing where we left off, in response to Lachdonin: Oriental themed RPGs are hardly present. I mean even the term JRPG completely leaves out the possibility of any game set in oriental themed worlds. Bioware's Jade Empire did something different and despite what flaws it had, it did it perfectly with the theme it represents.

Who's to say Bethesda hasn't considered this? XD Cyrodil embodies Roman and Midevil cultural themes, Skyrim, Norse. High Rock, Celtic. Hammerfall, Egyptians or Ottoman. Elswyre, Romanian or close to it. Summerset, a blend of Elven and Chinese. Etc etc. (A common occurrence that Morrowind fanatics fail to realize is that each province is special in their own right. They are all alien in comparison.)

Akaviri is straight up oriental to the core, and Cloud Ruler Temple and Sky Haven are examples of such. Would be great to see this kind of thing.

And as I said, if we can't go to Akavir, we can bring it to Tamriel. The theme cultural aversion still sticks if you want to know more about another race's way of life.

Oh, i don't mean to say that i think oriental themes are played out, they just don't appeal to me. At all. I don't like their art, their culture, their architecture, their mythologies... Nothing about the orient speaks to me on an emotional, spiritual or artistic level. I even find that their technology is over-rated and made to seem unique and advanced when equally or more sophisticated things existed elsewhere. I do understand, however, that i am in an extreme minority (and alas accompanied mostly by racist hillbillies) in that position mind you.

I do think that, from a story telling and questing based perspective, Akavir has some potential. Consider the conflict of interest should the Tsaeci Dragonguard come to Tamriel. What would the Blades do? Could the Blood-drinking shape-shifting of the Tsaeci be the new Thu'um? How would Tosh'Raka, a Mantle of Akatosh, respond to the ideocentric conflict between the Empire and the Dominion?

There is something there, i can't deny that as much as oriental such-and-such doesn't interest me. But, there is already enough going on on Tamriel right now that we don't need the Akaviri coming in and making things even more complicated.

I must make a terrible confession: no I'm not a lore expert. All these years I've been just playing, read a few books ingame but never dwelt too deeply in them (or wikis)

I know a bit about Akaviri and your idea of us seeing another continent.... it suits perfectly for what I proposed for marketing/expansion -wise. First create the perfect game mechanics for a sandbox RPG, true RPG, set the main game in one province but make it huuge. I'm hinting at daggerfall-huge, but you know it doesn't need to be that huge. Then, make expansions that are just as huge. Think of wow-expansions for example. Never played wow but I noticed how thay were marketed. And didn't they all add huge game areas?

DLC and official mods should be free, but expansions could cost as much as the core game. I'm talking about TES6 which has a ridiculous life span. Think of my suggestions about guild requirements again, infinite quests, etc, that make rolling yet another TES2 character appealing even today.... Now, TES games have long life spans thanks to modding community, but Bethesda doesn't get coin from it.
