Official: Future Fallout Locations Suggestions Topic #16

Post » Sat Jun 23, 2012 8:14 am

There have been a number of threads started to promote the idea of a particular location as a great setting for the next Fallout game. We have decided to keep the suggestions and discussion of different location ideas into one thread. Any new threads started about a location idea for Fallout will be locked or moved to this thread.

This thread should be used to discuss the different settings you think would work for a future Fallout game. Feel free to toss around the pros and cons (as you see them) for a new setting for a future Fallout game, but remember to keep any criticism or "cons" about a location within the rules for civil discussion.

To elaborate on two points made above, "setting" can refer to a time and situation as much as a place. This thread should also be used for any such discussion for any potential Fallout titles, not just Fallout 4.

Ripped Straight from an earlier post of mine

Region
Regionally speaking, I wouldn't mind seeing the game placed in the Major St. Louis area. Given that its not that big of a city, it wouldn't be as devastated as the larger coastal cities which are easier targets for warheads. It is the largest river port in the United States, along with being fairly old. There are a fair amount of larger buildings In the central city (which is neatly divided by the Mississippi) and plenty of surrounding suburbs. Given its smaller statue, greenery could be reintroduced a bit, and the major part of the region could be left standing. But since it still (at one point anyways) played a rather important role in the country, it would allow for it to be healthily irradiated in areas.
It was rated as the most dangerous city in the country in 2011. There could be a (un)healthy level of tribes (gangs) looking to maintain control. Drugs already make up a large portion of the cities economy, with dealers and addicts on the streets day an night, and little to no police regulation (generally due to the level of danger)
Aside from all of the negatives, it is a very historic city. acting as the last stop before travelers headed west. Before the advent of automobiles and flight, it was one of the biggest trading hubs in America. The city and surrounding areas are home to a large amount of industry (which might not have changed in Fallout, given Arms were in large demand).
The decaying remanis of The Gateway Arch would make a rather noticeable landmark within the game. The Zoo is well known, and would allow some rather interesting non-native wild life to exist in the area. As well as offer a rather out of place area to explore. The entire city sits over a massive cave network which would have been a more ideal escape route for the inhabitants of the city.
The Mid-west is known for its extreme seasonality. Hot, and frequently humid summers, dry cold winters, and rapid changes in temperature due to the placement of the Jet stream, and a lack of geographical boundaries to limit weather patterns.
As for gameplay, St Louis is a largely industrial city. In the Fallout Universe, they probably converted a large portion of the factories within the country to produce arms and ammunition. This would make weaponry fairly plentiful.

Please don't make the location for Fallout 4 a desert. PLEASE make it more interesting than that (man-made and natural landmarks).

I still think San Francisco (Bay Area) is an incredible idea. The city, bridges, islands, Alcatraz, parks, docks etc...

Seattle would also be amazing. Such diversity with water, mountains (Rainier or even Saint Helens), wilderness, islands ...and the city has interesting buildings (space needle!?!)

Chicago isn't a bad idea because the city is interesting... but I would argue that the surrounding landscape is boring. The great lake is cool, but it's too large and actually feels more like an ocean than a lake. Seattle has the potential for ocean beaches and lakes.

I also think European cities offer interesting terrain, backdrops and history. London, Paris, Prague and Rome could be exciting. Although, I do understand the importance of American culture and history to the Fallout aesthetic.

The capital wasteland was indeed intriguing. That feeling of excitement and wonder needs to be replicated (doubled even) for Fallout 4 to impress. I will always choose Fallout over Elder Scrolls. However, Skyrim did succeed in creating an awe-inspiring setting. I know Bethesda has it in them to upgrade the gameplay AND environment for the next Fallout.

San Francisco has been done in Fallout 2 and it is deep in NCR territory meaning only one major faction, a comparatively small amount of law-breaking and an ultimately dull setting.
I know Bethesda has it in them to upgrade the gameplay AND environment for the next Fallout.
I only hope that Bethesda learns that the gameplay and environment are not the only things that need to be upgraded for the next Fallout.

OT: My choices, as always for the next Fallout are these:
1 - Flagstaff - Providing more information and lore on the legion.

2 - Windsor/Detroit - It would be interesting to see how much the nature and differences of these two cities have changed since Canada was annexed and the bombs fell.

I have a bias toward Chicago, but objectively, the Seattle/Tacoma/Vancouver/Puget/Cascadia area probably has the most potential.

Another might be the area between Denver and Albuquerque. You'd have the AF Academy, NORAD, Los Alamos National Labs (home of the original atomic program and current military R&D), Sandia Labs, Kirtland AFB, all set in the Southern Rockies. You also have the most intact and entrenched (original) Native American settlements in the U.S.

And I don't think improving the environment should be anywhere near the top of the list for BGS. I think they did that incredibly well in F3, and even in Skyrim. I have no concerns about their ability to do so in F4. Their shortcomings are in other departments.

Have you ever been to Flagstaff? It's awful ... unless you're interested in bad Native American art and crystals (no offence to your idea, I just don't really like that area very much).

At least Detroit is somewhat interesting as a city and would allow for greater creativity regarding new factions and stories involving Canada.

It seems that since California and Nevada have already been used, maybe it would be best to stray away from the Southwest all together for the next go around.

The northwest hasn't been explored as of yet and is also close to Canada and relatively close to Alaska. I'll continue to champion Seattle/Vancouver as an idea.

The Northeast is always a logical choice as well......NYC, Toronto etc

Question: Is it clear whether or not the developers want to expand on the Fallout setting and lore? I guess I just assumed they want to branch out a bit (strictly talking about the place and setting, not getting in to the gameplay).

I realize that over text we are nearly at a complete loss when distinguishing vocal tones and emotions... I hope my answers and responses don't seem touchy or aggressive. I'm actually thrilled that I finally looked for a forum to talk about Fallout. Everything I write I write in good spirit. Just putting that out there.

I just know that it is the capital of Caesar's Legion. The reason why it is my number one choice is simply because we actually don't know that much about the Legion, especially the average life of its civilians.

It seems likely to me that they'd stay away from locals from the first two games and tactics - it gives them more room without overlapping.

I believe in Tactics St. Louis is overrun with Supermutants. So even in the almost 100 years since tactics I still see Supermutants playing a big role in anything involving St. Louis.

Aah, I had not played tactics. I did play 1 and 2 though, along with the modern interpretations.
Is tactics considered canon?

Edit: Nevermind, Bethesda declared it non-canon, except for select events that they like.

My bias is towards NYC, manahattan especially (of course, we would have to invoke some NV-esqe story about how manhattan was protected from the bombs to explain why everything is not underwater, but if D.C. and vegas are safe, NYC should be too), but I realize that NY is rather cliched due to it's importance as a city. LA would be deep in NCR territory, and i don't like the west anyways, so that's out. That leaves chicago, which would be my favorite choice. Tactics was done in the chicago area, but that was declared non-canon for the most part aside from the MW-BOS which is semi-canon so the story can involve them as a major faction

Philadelphia would work well too, with possible DLCs to
1.the D.C. wasteland to find out what parts of F3 are canon
2.NY just because you have to at least take one trip to NYC
3.the pitt, again to find out what is canon
4.chicago, because I'd like to see either that or NYC make an appearance

If we're going to go outside of the U.S., most likely the only place we would go would be canada since it was annexed before the war. Europe, england in particular could happen if we wanted to claim that the culture was similar enough to validate that, but it's probably going to stay in the US. I'd personally love to see Russia and what happened over there, since in the 50s it was the USSR still

One idea I do have (although admittedly it might not be the best) is to have a Fallout Game that starts just before the Nuclear War. Basically you play as the acestor of a future Vault Dweller, and you have to make sure you get your affairs in order, and you should also lock weapons away in hidden bunkers. Then you have to make it to the nearest Vault before the war happens. This then shifts to the future 2277, and you play Fallout as normal, and you'll be able to find the weapons you left 200 years ago in the hidden bunkers. (Upon escaping from the Vault)

[Alternative idea]

Instead of having what I mentioned above at the beginning of the game, some sort of quest where you have to travel back in time, to make sure something happens, like making sure a person's ancestors are kept alive, which upon completion of the Time Travel quest, will open up new quests as people will be alive to give them. Now I am not saying that you should go back and try to prevent the war, as that would mean the Fallout Universe wouldn't happen(Although a good theory is that it may happen at a later date instead0. I'm thinking small changes like keeping people alive and making sure certain weapons are moved etc.

I'd love the idea of Time Travel to happen in the Fallout Universe again. I mean come on, there's laser and plasma weapons, along with power armor, seriously it's a science fiction universe and as such time travel should be explored, even if it's only explored a little bit.

Setting

[ Idea 1 ]

I would like to see the game set in Manchester, UK. I'd like to be able to wander around a post-apoc Manchester, and I can explore my home town after a Nuclear war.

Not only that, but Manchester was the centre of industry for the UK, and as such has a lot of history associated with it. However this is something I personally want to happen.

[ Idea 2 ]

Set in New York..... I think this is a popular idea for a fallout game. It's no surprise either. New York houses the United Nations, which is disbanded in the Fallout Universe, however I think it could potentially factor in with the story. I'm sure there'd be some hidden bunkers under there given it was a military and diplomatic facility. Also you could factor in a story similar to the 9/11 attacks (Obviously with differences tuned for the Fallout Universe). A good (and believable) story is that a civilian air craft crashed into the a building due to shock-waves from the Nuclear blasts. The crash and the shock waves caused the building to collapse.

Before anyone says anything, I am not trying to make fun of 9/11. I just want the Fallout Universe to bear some resemblance to our own. Terrorism was around before the great War. As Tel Aviv was destroyed by a terrorist nuclear device. (According to the Fallout Wiki)

If I have offended anyone with the above idea I apologise I did not mean to cause any offence. If the mods also believe the above idea is offensive then I request that they remove it. I just wanted my ideas heard.

[ Idea 3 ]

Set in China. Okay this is a bad idea I think. Fallout is about a Post-Apoc America, I don't see why we would want a game set in the enemies country. That's all I am going to say as I don't want to be branded "Racist" for giving my reasons for why it shouldn't be set in China.

More Ideas

  • More Human like robots. For example imagine a terminator without the living tissue, these would be awesome enemies, and they are more intelligent than standard robots, they could be prototypes that were built by the enclave, but eventually escaped and formed their own army (or something), they would favour using Heavy energy based weapons (Gauss Cannon's, Gatling lasers etc.), however they also like using missile launchers.

  • Super Mutants using power armour.

BWAAAAAAAAAH

True. I personally wouldn't mind it, as long as they were more isolated to one side of the city. The river makes a wonderful natural boundary line, keeping the super mutants to one side.
