But look at it this way.
Eldar Scrolls has been going on for so long that there is a world, a culture, societies, politics and much much more and they have been written about so extensively that if we look at the MMO as a separate entity it might work. We might just get a great MMO and Bethedsa might just be working on another single player for us at the same time. We could end up with the best of both worlds

The only way I would accept an Elder Scrolls MMO is if it were based on Mundus, but not on Tamriel.
ie: Some new continent that the various player races are exploring and learning about. That way it wouldn't have to worry about conflicting with previous lore, or interupting subsequent single-player games based in the nations we've come to know and love.

Thats actually a great idea.

I hope you're right, but why is Bethesda doing the paperwork and not Zenimax Online?

Who the hell knows man. Could be tax reasons, could be internal stuff. Could be that there are no secrets in the gaming industry as its such a competitive industry and you then load onto that the pressures and competition of MMO's ............... forget about it. Could be they figured the best way was to keep it separate from their own staff and others. The longer you are working for a games company the more people get to know you and who you work for. I mean, 10 years on people still remember I worked for Havas Interactive (now Vivendi).

But read this:
http://www.zenimaxonline.com/about.html
Thanks and welcome to ZeniMax Online Studios. This is my chance to tell you a bit about how ZeniMax Online came to be, and why we’re here.

I was one of the founders of Mythic Entertainment, and have been in the multiplayer game development business a long time – the first commercial game I worked on was in 1988. After producing Dark Age of Camelot and its early expansions, I left Mythic in 2006.

I’ve been given this tremendous opportunity to start an online game development studio by ZeniMax Media, the company that also owns Bethesda Softworks. ZeniMax Media is a great company in its own right, with literally an all-star board of directors, and Bethesda Softworks’ stellar reputation in the industry is well deserved and rock-solid. Bethesda has enjoyed incredible success with The Elder Scrolls series and Fallout 3.

The important part for me is 2 things. When he left Mythic (dates coinciding, no?) and the fact that ZeniMax Online and ZeniMax Media is talked about as the same thing basically and ZeniMax was founded in 1999 by Bethesda Softworks founder Chris Weaver and Robert A. Altman

Yea Zovo, that is a great idea. Its not like there would not be expansions anyways. So we could have it all over the years.... hey, call me greedy I dont care lol

Well I'm pretty sure the MMO wont interfere with TESV, or whatever Bethesda's next game is. After all, http://www.zenimaxonline.com/index.html said themselves, "think of us as the multiplayer-focused Bethesda Softworks." So that's reassuring.

Oh, and for anybody who's still confused:

Zenimax Media owns:

Vir2L Studios, Zenimax Online, Bethesda Softworks, id, and Bethesda Game Studios

Everybody except Bethesda Softworks develops games, and any game developed by one division isn't necessarily influenced by another.

Bethesda Softworks is the division that publishes games like Wet and Brink, and occasionally publishes games that the other 4 divisions develop.

Exactly, Bethesda's in the court, not Zenimax. Must be a Bethesda project.

I honestly don't care what the hell it is, as long as it's good. Maybe Professor Antabolis and the and the Dwemer Box?

Next TES game is an MMO.

It feels bad you know. Finding out all of my ill will and naysaying about profit mongering was actually true.

But it's Bethesda Softworks (iirc) that's in court, so it could still be a Zenimax Online project.

I am sure they found Elderscrollsonline in court, but again, my thought on this subject:

Bethesda bought Elderscrollsonline as to make sure no one else would use TES on a MMO, including Zenimax Online. If anything that could be made by Zenimax Online, it would be something else, not from the TES Serie. Just because Bethesda have the right does not mean they are going to use it and just because Zenimax Online is in relation with Bethesda does not automatically means they are making a TES MMO.

The Bethesda mentioned in the article is Bethesda Softworks, who is currently in court fighting with Interplay. Bethesda Game Studios isn't in court, Bethesda Softworks is. This means that the MMO they were talking about was most likely made by Zenimax Media, who's SOLE purpose for existing is to create an MMO using one of Bethesda's IPs (TES or Fallout). It would be stupid for Bethesda Game Studios to make a MMO at the same time as Zenimax Online, which leads to the only logical conclusion, that Bethesda Game Studios is NOT making an MMO, but Zenimax Online IS.

http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Bethesda_v._Interplay

So TESV, or whatever Bethesda Game Studios is currently making, isn't going to be an MMO.

Aaaand, totally different discussion, related to Falllout IP... not relevant to this conversation, which was supposed to be about TES MMO.

honestly guys, lets look at the facts:

-zenimax online is founded right here in maryland. its sole purpose is the creation of MMOs.
-bethesda maintains stance on working with single player properties only.
-elder scrolls online related sites are registered.
-the growing popularity of TES and MMOs
-zenimax is most likely making an MMO based on an existing franchise. Since FO is off limits, TES it is.

an ES MMO is a pretty big "duh." it will be separate of the main series, but developed under the same umbrella. you don't have to buy it if you don't like it, and it probably wont be any worse than the mobile games or the new novel.

the only remaining question is how much of a WoW clone it will be. i firmly believe that an online game can be created which maintains the feel of TES, both in terms of lore and of gameplay. I also agnowledge however that most MMOs are WoW ripoffs. which one TES:O will be remains to be seen.

P.S. ppl in mmos dont spk leik this lol

That's almost unfair to say now that WoW, itself, has incorporated so many features of games which have been released since it's own initial release.

it is even more unfair to say since WoW itself fed heavily off Everquest et al. what i refer to is the gameplay shared between most MMOs, including a task bar, skills on cooldown, dailies, etc.

I can't say I really want to do any of that.

What I will say, I hope makes sense. Since the release of World of Warcraft, how many Warcraft games have there been?

It depends, if Bethesda Game Studios is counseling Zenimax Online on the do's and dont's of making an Elder Scrolls game, I think it could be pretty good. But if Zenimax Online is given creative freedom, like they're doing with Obsidian and Fallout: New Vegas, it could turn into just another WoW clone. Bethesda has given Obsidian a lot of freedom with making NV, hopefully they didn't do the same with Zenimax Online.

It makes sense though to incorporate elements which have proven to be successful in the past into some thing new. Yeah, ideally a whole new gameplay system would be really cool, but the more complex the game the more you have to rely on either; point and click taskbars full of skills, or pause menus which allow you to chose your next action. And since MMOs don't pause. . .

Edit: Really, though, the gameplay isn't my biggest concern for something like this. I mean really, Daggerfall, Morrowind, and Oblivion are all somewhat lacking in the field of gameplay for one reason or another; it's the stories, the characters, the world and it's people which we've come to know and love, not the revolutionary gameplay.

Honestly I don't care if it's an exact clone of WoW as far as gameplay goes, so long as the spirit of the Elder Scrolls world is preserved.

I cannot even fathom how this game can be a wow clone I mean... unless they completely destroy the universe, lore, immersion and game world but I have some faith that they are not going to do that.

What if it's partially an MMO?

Like... oh wait, they said world-of-warcraft type... there goes my hopes of it being single player when you're playing the story. And maybe multiplayer online battles or something.

*sigh*

Well, I've still got TES: IV...

Maybe it's because they figured: "Eh, they can make a new game with the construction set anyway."

I hope there's still an official TES game coming out, because I've played over 50 MMOs and I've had enough of them.

tbh I'd also have to be in that ball park. One of the games I am modding for the Community Manager was changed and we were asked for a histroy of what games we have played and I got bored listing them lol plus I had to use lists like mmorpg.com's game list to remember. Scary how much time we spend gaming lol

Holy crap!
I couldn't even name 50 MMOs

I had a social phobia until like... a year ago. I had nothing to do, and after the first 15-20 MMOs I just had MMO ADHD, I'd play it for a few hours, and then be like "Wow, you know what? This is just like the other ones."

Either way, this is how I picture the new game:

Martut has logged in.

"Oh wow this... looks pretty good, I guess I'll just run around looking for something to do."

NPC Farmer: "Please, my farms are doing poorly, my chickens are all sick, and my wife left me. It's all those stupid wolves fault! Kill 10, and we'll pretend you rid them from the area."

"Umm... What does your wife's infidelity have to do with wolves?"

--After The Quest--

NPC Farmer: "Thanks for killing all of those wolves, now maybe my wife will come back."

--2 seconds later--

NPC Farmer: "I got a letter from my wife, she's high in the mountains, in the most unreachable place, please bring her this letter."

Martut has received "Please Come Back!"

Martut clicks on "Please Come Back!"

You can't read it, it's sealed.

--After I trek up the mountain, running past every monster--

NPC Farmer's Wife: "That Daniel never knows how to keep his trap shut."

Martut receives Sword of Destruction +5 Fire Damage, and Steel Armor of Defense +4

"Woo... yeah..."

--The Next Day--

"I want to start being a healer character, running and killing stuff is no fun."

Friend #1: ">W< Lol, why wud u do tat?"

"I just don't find running around and clicking on everything to kill it fun..."

Friend #1: "OOO: rlly?"

"Yeah... I miss modding."

Friend #1: "I made a mod where you could kill Mehrunes Dagon in 1 hit, and at the same time do 10,000 damage to everybody, and make them fly up into the air screaming, and blood rained down everywhere and splashed all over my character's face while I made all of the buildings light on fire and explode with chunks flying everywhere."

"Not only is that violent, but that's practically impossible."

Friend #1: "im nvr talking 2 u ever again! i did do that stuff. And cuz you dont believe me, u hate me."

"Okay."

Martut has been removed from the game for insulting another player.
