Official TES Multiplayer Thread

Well, I've never liked MMO's. They're just too boring and restrictive becuase the multiplayer components take up so much of what the game 'is'. It restricts the player from truly changing the world becuase the design must be such that everyone has the same oppertunities. As such I wouldn't an MMO version of TES.

Co-op on the other hand could be quite interesting. I've often wondered what it would be like rampaging through dungeons with one or two of my mates. The way it works could be simple too. Story progression is for the host only (the other players take on more of a mercenary role), but experience, levels, and loot would be kept.

It's about the only way I could see a multiplayer aspect working in TES.

Daiyus, you hit it on the head. There's no way they can sell the same experience to everyone if the things that make the single-player ES so rich make it into the MMO.

It's a square peg in a round hole kind of thing. In the end, one crowd is going to be disappointed: the single players or the multiplayers.

Well if the next Elder Scrolls game is going to have an MMO feel to it, why not have the best of both worlds.
If a player can't afford to play the online mode then the game acts like a standard single player game (all the places within the story are accessible to the player minus the online stuff like co-op guild quest, arena fights etc). In the single player mode you create a character play through the games story and if want to play online you take that character (level, weapons, bounty, equipment and more) online any play with the rest of world. As for the games story online---maybe have an icon or something showing your character and where they are at in the game's story and folks who are on the same quest as you are can choose weither or not to join you.

Plus all MMOs are instantly immersion breaking. "I've been asked by the gods to save the Empire and become the champion of Tamriel!" "Me too!(X1000000)"

I really don't understand why there are so many naysayers.

Here's the deal. As long as Beth continues the series of single player, open world, ES RPGs (which they have stated is their plan), there are no bad outcomes to an ES MMO. If you don't like MMO's, don't play the game. I'm really appalled by people's lack of confidence in Bethesda. If Beth thought an ES MMO would hurt the series, alienate their hardcoe fans, or just be a bad game, WE WOULD NOT SEE IT HITTING SHELVES. ES is their baby and any ES product, regardless of who it is made by, is bound to have plenty of insight and approval from the Beth team. I trust Beth and I am excited for any game set in the elder scrolls universe. Also, the head of the ZO team, Matt Firor, worked on dark age of camelot, which received great reviews and was hailed as one of the smoothest running MMOs from its launch date. I think we'll have a pretty solid MMO experience with ZO.

Now, here are some more reasons not to hate the idea of an ES MMO:

A lot of people have been restricting the elder scrolls games to the "single player, open world, immersive rpg experience." Does this need to be the case? So long as Beth continues to make those games, there's no reason why other types of games set in the same world won't be good. In fact, there are tons of reasons they'll be very good. I love to explore the unique open world of the ES games. It is likely that there will be the entire continent of Tamriel, or at least most of it, in an ES MMO. I can't see them doing it any other way really. If it is detailed and interesting enough, it will be one of the greatest exploration experiences in video game history. Who wouldn't want to travel to the deserts of Elswyr and then head west into bosmer territory, or east into Black Marsh? Sure, you wont be completely alone in the world, but at the same time, you can find a decent amount of alone time even in WOW if that is your thing. If you want to explore Tamriel alone in an ES MMO, I'm sure you won't bump into too many other wanders with the size of the continent. Also, if the dungeons are instanced, you won't have to worry about bumping into anyone in those hot spots either.

Personally, I think the universe of ES is the best you could ever put into an MMO. Nothing will ever beat Morrowind for me (except for TESV maybe), but an MMO would be really cool in the ES universe. You just have to think of it a separate entity from the series. There are loads of races to choose from, each with different backgrounds and cultures. There are so many different paths to choose from as far as skills and classes go, and so many ways to specialize. An ES MMO would have such an amazing diversity of characters from player to player. The world would feel alive in a way that it cant possibly in a single player RPG. Towns would really come to life, with both players and NPCs. WOW was fun for a while, but the lore isnt nearly as interesting and unique as TES and neither are the environments. A TES MMO has a good possibility of kicking every other MMO's ass, and if the population of the game world consisted primarily of true, role-playing, ES fans, it would be a role players heaven. ES gives you the room to create your own back story and your own personality. An ES MMO would let you interact with thousands of other unique characters with their own back stories and personalities.

The game my not be immersive in the same way the other ES games are (lonely, ambiguous hero doing his/her own thing in a vast world), but it will be immersive. If any MMO could immerse you in a different world, it would be TES.

I could go on about the things I would like to get out of an ES MMO, but this post was mainly just to tell people to stop being such negative nancys. I think that an MMO is just a step in the evolution of TES series. Not evolution in the sense that the set up of your original ES game is going extinct, but evolution in the sense that the franchise is being expanded upon. I don't know what to expect from an ES MMO, but if Beth supports it, so do I. They wouldn't let anything bad happen to the franchise and they wouldn't allow an ES game to be released that they wouldn't play themselves. Chances are, the game will be done right, and I'm ready and willing to give it a try.

Bethesda or any of its sister, parent or what ever companies are not making a Fallout MMO

Interplay and Masthead Studios are doing it lol

As long as Bethesda keeps making TES games that are single-player/sand box I don't care if they license another company to make an MMO with an Elder Scrolls logo on or not. I am much more concerned about the Fallout series taking any more development time from TES5 then I am about an MMO made by an outside company that I won't play anyways.

But they probably won't for the same reason you haven't seen a Warcraft game since WoW was released.

What makes you say that? Bethesda is not developing the MMO. You think they would stop development of the ES series (their beloved brainchild) as a result of Zenimax Online making an MMO?

Don't worry there are no plans in a TES MMORPG. The Fallout MMO plans are true and can be confirmed by the domain registration of falloutmmog.net (using Zenimax Nameservers) but there is no online content made available .. yet.

Man .. If there won't be news on TES5 by Bethesda anytime soon, I am going to start ..

(1) kick some butts
(2) apply for a job at gamesas to get that thing finally rolling
(3) play some more MW, OB and FO3
(4) continue being the nerd that I am who can't await the arrival of the first screenshots of TES5
(5) do nothing .. WTF? .. that's not an option

I thought of this on the lore forum, but this seems to be the best place to give the idea; what if they made a TES MMO from the Daedra's perspective? Where you play as a lesser Daedra, and when you die, you could respawn at your patron Prince's realm. Just think, it'd not only have minimal effect on the mortal lore that most of what we've seen in TES is, but it'd also give a lore-friendly explanation for the respawning mechanic.

I agree with your laments on no TESV news, but I can guarantee you that Zenimax Online is not making a fallout mmo. They have stated in court that they aren't, and on top of that it just wouldnt make sense with the timeline of things. Interplay began working on a fallout MMO in 2006. Bethesda officially purchased the Fallout IP in 2007. They then licensed the rights to continue work on the fallout MMO back to Interplay on the condition that development would begin within the next 24 months. Later in 2007 it was announced that Zenimax Online Studios had been formed. The current court battle between Beth and Interplay is because Beth is accusing Interplay of not yet beginning development of the fallout MMO.

Now that all that information is out there, riddle me this: Why would ZO begin development on a fallout MMO while the license was still in the hands of interplay? That would be a waste of time, provided Interplay holds up their end of the agreement and keeps the rights. I'm sure if things fall through with interplay, a fallout MMO will be the next ZO works on, but it is pretty much impossible that it is what they are currently deep in development of.

On a different note, this ZO FAQ is pretty interesting. It also says that they work closely with the Bethesda team, they share IP, and that Beth will be publishing their release. If it isn't a fallout MMO (which im 99.9% sure it isnt), its obviously a TES MMO.

You know seeing all this outcry.. I just want to speak up and say my opinion.

Personally I say go for it.. Besides the team working on their MMO isn't the same team that does the single player games.. Yeah if they release an MMO, it might push back Elder Scrolls 5 or it might not. Personally it is their franchise and I say go for it.. If they released a semi decent mmo I would gladly play it.. I've been playing Elder Scroll games since Daggerfall. I love the settings, lore and just style of them. If they can bring that into a decent mmo I would gladly play it. I know for a fact they could bring their skill system and gameplay into an mmo.. Others have done it. People are generally just confused the Wow, EQ style gameplay.. While they are the more popular there have been many mmo's that play more like an elderscrolls game in the past..

As long as they keep it true, and to the style of elder scrolls series.. And don't turn it into Wow retextured for Elder Scrolls, I'm fine with it.. I will be there playing day one..

Actually, the Money that the MMO might rake in could go to Bethesda, which could help them make ES W/e better.

Kwolf, its good to see other people as open minded and optimistic about a TES MMO.

Actually, the Money that the MMO might rake in could go to Bethesda, which could help them make ES W/e better.

Much of the money WILL go to Bethesda. They are publishing the MMO ZO is working on.

I believe Beth has gotten into doing a lot of publishing in order to finance an amazing future for ES and Fallout games.

i dont have anything against mmo's excet that they all have svcked so far even the d&d ones...and the fact that im poor so i dont have xbox live. and im mostly a console gamer...except for counterstrike...
but i have always wanted to play a video game that would replace d&d paper...for me and my friends...so if they make no monthly fee or a really cheap one. and make xbox live free since none of my boys nor i have pc's then i would be whole heartedly svcked into the mmo world! cus TES is were its at baby!

Semi-decent MMO?

No thanks for sure. I've played enough MMOs not to be interested in yet another generic game, regardless of its setting.
