Official TES V Speculation Thread

How "to scale" is Fallout 3?

It's still pretty small in comparison.

I think for the next TES game, they should do only a small area of the province. Like if in OB you only got to play around the Imperial City, but that area was 16 sq miles, then the province would feel a whole lot bigger. Hell, with their "new" engine, they might be able to pull a JC2 and have a province that's a couple hundred square miles.

How was all that space created in Just Cause 2, random generation? I'm sure Bethesda is familiar with random generation, but they moved away from it for good reasons. Also, why not allow people to explore more of Cyrodiil just for the illusion of size? It really doesn't make a difference.

I honestly don't know.

Quality over quantity. That's my opinion anyway.

Quality over quantity is also my opinion. The thought of quality over quantity is why Bethesda stopped randomly-generating massive games games such as Arena and Daggerfall(which is larger than Great Britain) and started hand-crafting much smaller games such as Morrowind and Oblivion. Condensing Oblivion into a smaller area(but still keeping the game the exact same size) doesn't affect quality or quantity, it just gives the illusion of a much larger province(that we can't explore).

But I like the illusion of size. :P

Have you not played Daggerfall? It's absolutely huge and covers a pretty small area on the map. It's unfortunately what they did with Oblivion (and Morrowind for that matter) because it really made the entire continent look very small. The effect is similar to if you took the United States and reduced it down to about a couple square miles with only scant representations of the cities of New York, Washington DC, Chicago, Miami, Denver, and Los Angelos.

Actually, I never have played the game :( I'm waiting till I buy my new gaming computer, 'cause at the moment, all I have is a MacBook Pro (Don't shoot me).

Daggerfall is ridiculously large. It's larger than Great Britain(not the region of Daggerfall, but the entire landmass of the game of Daggerfall)

That's not really saying much...

On another note #8: More TESV pl0x?

I'll believe it's not much when I can run across(or ride a horse across) an area that is 1.6 times the size of Great Britain easily.

As for TES V... I don't know what to say. What's left to say?

In response to one of Antibody's posts in another thread concerning Bethesda announcing a game without a trademark:

Well, Bethesda might be planning on something we don't expect. Perhaps they will trademark another name(a more vague name) soon and not announce TES V until late this year or early next year. Then, they might release TES V only 1 year after they announce it(against past traditions, but hype could actually be more built-up sooner to an announcement date, considering Bethesda would release information in a shorter amount of time than they have done with previous games). I doubt this, but I am hoping for it anyway.

Speaking of more vague names, why didn't Bethesda trademark a more vague name than Skyrim(to keep us guessing about TES V's setting), such as Tribunal or Oblivion?

Haha! The size of that game gets more exaggerated every year it seems.

Apparently the scale of the game was so large that it was almost as large as Wales, the smallest country in Great Britain.

That's still huge though. When I started playing it last year I still had the 'no fast-travel' mindset I had adopted in Oblivion. Took me over half an hour to travel from the starting dungeon's exit to the nearest village... Needless to say, I soon started fast-travelling when I saw how far away the city of Daggerfall was on my map :P

So I suppose when the new Game Informer cover comes out we'll get a flood of overjoyed "Omg this is amazing!" replies, or a few really depressed ones?

most likely depressed replies...considering that we have no information that suggests the new game informer will have anything to do with TES or even Bethesda for that matter.

It will reach housed somewhere around the 10th. Normally the cover is announced between the 4th and the 8th so expect to hear what it is soon.

Well remember that we'll hear an official announcement from Bethesda first, then the cover will be revealed, so the most we'll get is a few depressed replies if the Game Informer cover isn't TES V. Though we can take comfort in the fact that with every cover that isn't TES V, there's an even better chance that the next month's will be TES V.

It seems unlikely that ES:V will be on this month's cover, but I imagine it will be soon.

The idea that it could be on the cover was if there was an annoncement coupled with the TESting your knowledge comp, but seeing as there wasnt it rules out the cover this time.

I wonder if bethesda staff ever come and read our ramblings?

Yeah, actually they frequent this thread often. Usually about once a week I'll catch one of them poking around.

Well, at least everyone thinking the game is going to be in Skyrim means it's going to be somewhere else. There is no way Bethesda would make a game subtitled Skyrim, seriously, that's way too lame.

Hi there, I'd like to introduce you to a little game called Morrowind... ever heard of it? Yes, believe it or not, they did name a game after a province before, so there's no reason to think they wouldn't do it again.

Don't forget Daggerfall, the game named after a city!

Well, Daggerfall is also a region.

Antibody, they named Morrowind Morrowind, but the game's setting was only part of Morrowind, and not even on the mainland. Mournhold wasn't in the original game. How can someone name the game Morrowind and not have Mournhold(or the mainland) in it? What will Bethesda name the game that takes place on the mainland?
