Official TES V Speculation Thread # 53

You tell me. You said we have been given a new idea about a third elder scrolls book m'kay?

Oh, I misread blog's theory and thought that it mentioned two more books to come after the Infernal City...It's not that hard to grasp.

Again my question is why do we have a new theory/idea that involves a possible third book? Because you misread a post?

My misreading gave me this idea...there is no answer to "why"...it just did.

I like the idea of the "conspiracy theory" except for one bit. It is a nice idea to think the game is already made. However, they will announce it at least a month before it is actually shipped to stores and here is why.
The Sega Saturn.

At E3 '93 Sega announced that their new console was shipping to stores that day... a good two months ahead of schedule. Stores were caught unprepared, in fact some even refused to carry it on such short notice. Plus, the fans where caught unawares and the sales of the Saturn were pitiful. So Bethesda would be very foolish to do that with TESV. Of course the hard core fans of the series would manage to get their hands on it as quickly as they found out about it. But those fans are not enough to create the wave Bethesda needs to support them.

So yes to the first, no to the second. I think they have been working on the game this whole time, and I really hope that they surprise us with announcing that they have the game nearly finished and it will be out by the holiday.

That would be nice although its never going to happen. I don't think we will see this game until 2012 at the earliest and that's if its even coming in this generation.

*sigh*

Next-gen is most likely not the determinant factor for TES:V's release. The only exception is IF the next-gen's release happens to fall close with TES:V's planned release (assuming the next-gen platforms are even in the works).

Didnt bethesda make the last one for the xbox 360 in mind by the way it made the pause menus and stuff for the controller? If they did it before how come they cant be planning the same thing? Do u know something we dont know about the dev? it could be a factor

I find it a tad hard to believe that Bethesda started making Oblivion with the 360 in mind considering they started in 2002 and development of the Xbox 360 didn't even begin until February 2003. I find this hard to believe because, to my knowledge, we haven't invented time machines yet.

Bethesda did announce it for http://pc.ign.com/objects/702/702491_articles.html but that was in September 2004, only about a year before the Xbox 360's launch.

Point is, they didn't make it for the Xbox 360 in mind when they started, they simply changed their plans and made it for the 360 later. Changing control schemes isn't as difficult as you seem to think it is...

This is true. But I believe Oblivion was geared toward the 360 because its development cycle fell within the 360's timeline. Had the 360 been a year or so away I believe Oblivion would have been released on the previous generation. A good comparative question to ask (between now and then) is how long before Oblivion's release was the 360 known? I suspect the 360 was known a couple years before Oblivion's release (but this is just a guess so I could be way off here).

Next-gen is a factor; but one that seems it could influence TES:V by months, not years.

I don't know what they were planning. Perhaps they were planning for PC only and were going to port it to consoles later like they did with Morrowind. Or maybe they made it with the PC and Xbox in mind but changed to the Xbox 360 later. But my point was that they couldn't have started developing Oblivion with the 360 in mind way back in 2002.

Maybe they were still in the pre-production stage where they were still making all the concepts up in stuff and then the 360 came along and they decided to target that with the PC.

I am sure you will have the option to buy TESV on a next gen console.... when the console comes out. But I don't see Bethesda, or any other game company really, basing their schedules around a console they don't even have the details of. I doubt it will be more than a year for the Elder Scrolls 5 to be released. And really, what else does Bethesda have to do with its game dev team?

I am sure we will see it at the very latest, holiday of 2011.

Not in 2010 it isn't! We're still so far off from when it's possible for the next generation of consoles to be revealed, let alone released. I am extremely doubtful that that could happen at this time. As I've said before, if it isn't announced until after Summer 2011, then I will consider that a possibility. But not now.

I am sure we will see it at the very latest, holiday of 2011.

We're getting pretty close to the cut off point for that date to be possible. It will have to be announced this summer at the latest for it to be possible for it to be released in late 2011, if we consider the fact that Bethesda always takes a year or a year and a half to release a game after announcing it.

All manner of things that leak go into console development. Has anyone seen whether ATI or NVIDIA are making the next GPUs for a console? Whether Intel, AMD, or IBM have the inside track on the CPU?

I think not and these are often "two years out" leaks. Antibody is pretty much dead on unless someone can source those details in "old news".

I meant it was like the game that came out was with 360 in mind not they start thinking about it and doing writing and stuff. I was just asking a question.

Oblivion wasn't developed from the start with the Xbox 360 in mind. It was developed for the PC, although they tried for a 360 launch title I think.

Back track to 2004, when Doom 3 was released. That game was the first to display next-gen graphics, not too far off from what we have now. ID Tech 4 is STILL powering games, such as Wolfenstein and Brink (apparently), but I see that game as the starting point for this so called next-gen rush. Even though, Doom 3 was also released for the original Xbox.

The next engine to come out was Valve's Source engine, which featured damn good physics. Both ID Tech 4 and Source were engines that were in development years before 2004, however.

Unreal Engine 4 is going to be for the 8th generation consoles. ID tech 6 already has speculation about, that it may feature some ray-tracing elements. Both engines are very far off - an ID tech 5 game has yet to be released.

TES V: will be this-gen. Not next-gen. This-gen. As I said about Doom 3 being the first "next-gen" game, it was still released for a 6th-gen console. There is no reason to believe that a game cannot be released that incorporates elements that will be a part of the 8th generation, yet still run on 7th-gen hardware. This is already the case. Crysis, Crysis 2, S.T.A.L.K.E.R and a handful of other games using DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 technology are games that in graphical capabilities will be in between 7th and 8th generation games. However, they are also PC games, and DirectX is a PC technology. Crysis 2 is also going to be released for the consoles. So, in the end, even though on PC they will have superior graphics to their console counter parts - Doom 4 will be the same way most likely - they are still 7th-gen games.

7th-gen is going to be around for quite a while. 6th-gen titles have still been released even recently. 7th-gen was dominated not by graphical prowess but new methods of interacting with the game itself - the Wii, despite its relative "retardation" compared to PS3 and 360, is a console that sold a lot better and now the other consoles are trying to capitalize on the success of the Wii with Playstation Move and Kinect. Give these new products about 3 years time, then lets start talking about 8th gen... until then, the only 8th gen anyone will see any time soon is not a console you plug into a TV, nor is it going to be TESV... I think the first truly 8th-gen device will be the Nintendo 3DS, because this is technology using 3D displays without the need for glasses.

8th generation technology will make wide use of 3D technology, along with better motion capture controls. We may start to see displays that can display 3D without the need for glasses. This might even be the generation that true virtual reality starts to appear in a more advanced form, although I'm betting that's for the 9th generation - and probably in 20 years we'll be able to step inside a game with all 5 senses simulated.

I know this post is more speculation on future of video games than anything else, but the point is, TESV is not going to be released in the 8th generation. It will still be a 7th generation game, because there is not going to be an instant leap to 8th gen. There will be a gradual development to it. TESV will be part of that, but it will still be able to run on 7th-gen hardware because 8th gen is too far off. 3 years is a very liberal estimate... I think 8th gen might come about around 2015. Also, the next Xbox may likely have capabilities to run DirectX 12, or even DirectX 13... both of which aren't even close to release.

For everyone saying that esv can't be a next gen title because specs and a release aren't set for the 8th gen consoles and it would alter the game development too much did you ever think that esv isn't even in development? Maybe bgs is waiting for that specific info to be released such as specs and timeframe? After seeing the critical and commercial success of elder scrolls iv surely they would want to benefit off a dual release again with esv I don't think they will release on pc first then consoles it will be a simultaneous multi platform release again like oblivion was. Pc and ps4 I'm sure. So yea there is definately a chance esv isn't even in devlopment yet or at the most maybe very early stages...

What we do know: 1) they started upping the engine a couple of years ago 2) TESV has been in development for quite some time now which can be deduced from the estimated possible 2010 release date.

It's certain that they didn't know PS4's and XB720's gpu-capablities during their initial engine update planning where they were laying the foundation and frames for the engine. Now why they would have started upping their engine at so early phase if they wanted to release for next gen consoles? Makes no sense. What they'll probably do is that TESV comes this gen equipped with engine capable of DX10.1 + tesselation or more pure DX11. After that they'll release Fallout 4 for the next gen with fine tuned engine to suit better the consoles when they know what they have inside.

Besides, Sony execs have said that PS4 will came some time AFTER XB720; so it would make even less sense from business point of view for Beth to release TESV for next gen.

Bethesda said that when Oblivion was in development neither did they have a clue nor did they care about the hardware requirements of the next generation of consoles. They just started to develop the game heading for the moon and once finished they had to make some adjustments so they could release it simultaneously for PC and Xbox 360 and then port it to PS3 about a year later. I am sure that they have been doing the same over the last few years, as far as the next Elder Scrolls is concerned, and it doesn't make any sense at all for developers to waste their time speculating about the next generation of hardware.

Well i think TESV must be in development now and they are currently starting work on creating the story and world-map.
Look at the job opportunities the currently have:

# Senior World Artist New
# World Artist (Contractor) New

Both jobs have "Experience with The Elder Scrolls Construction Set or GECK" as a plus.
