Official TES V Speculation Thread # 56

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 5:07 am

Anyone else think they're wating for the next gen consoles? Maybe I'm reading into it too much, but the way Todd Howard was going on about a fresh start and dealing with new technology in his Industry Gamer's interview had me wondering. Imo it would be a good marketing move to be a launch title again like it was with the 360.

So If we go that way, maybe at QuakeCon Bethesda will show updated engine, not a game.

I don't think it's good buisiness strategy to wait for the next generation of consoles, unless BGS knows something that we don't, like if the new consoles are coming out next year.

Even if new consoles were to come out, and TES V was going to be one of the first titles for the Xbox (insert name here), I think that it would likely be supported on the 360 anyway, unless they're coming out with a console that is vastly different from what they've done in the past, which I think is quite unlikely.

I think that, if Bethesda is not planning on actually announcing anything at this year's Quakecon, then we probably wont hear anything at all about TES. I'm sure they're still very aware of what happened last year when Todd said that infamous quote and had everybody freaking out. I wouldn't be surprised if Todd will have "don't say anything about TES, don't say anything about TES" repeating in his mind as he attends Quakecon.

Bethesda now have two IPs which gives the company more flexiblity. Therefore, the most efficient strategy is probably to release TESV for this generation of consoles and FO4 for the next generation of consoles. Personally, I expect TESV to become available close to early 2012 and FO4 close to late 2014.

My thoughts exactly. Also, if they alternate one title then another (at least until they get a big enough team to develop both at once) then that can douse any specter of favoritism. I can see it now, if they made two of one IP in a row, the other fanbase would explode with (warning: satirical webspeak ahead): "OH NO3S T3Y R LAVING TEH SERIES 4 TEH STUPID 1!!!!1!!!!"

Don't say it won't happen, you know it will. So if they go Oblivion-Fallout 3-TESV-Fallout 4- and so on, then people can just say "well, no, they're just currently on series A or B" whenever that comes up.

As for QuakeCon, it was a full year since last year's QuakeCon misquote. So I think if they say anything at all, it will be so direct and explicit a statement as to make it impossible to misquote. Which is to say either they will say nothing or announce it outright.

I'm sorry I added something remotely useful (that hadn't been posted before either, as far as I've seen) to this spam box that we call the Speculation Thread. Forgive me?

Lol I was just joking around, don't take it personally, no hard feelings?

I'm just saying here, if any articles are put up about QuakeCon TES stuff, I'm gonna wait until I also hear it at the blog. I mean, seriously, if something could be so badly misquoted last year from "Don't look for it in the near future" to "We're not making TESV" then even if they say it was announced I'll let it come up on the main page news thing replacing the book's release.

According to the latest http://bethblog.com/index.php/2010/07/30/quakecon-2010-panels-and-special-presentations-schedule/#more-9823 there will be several presenters from BGS @ QuakeCon.

I'm getting a strong vibe that 'some' info will slip out on Beth's current project.

NOBEL!! NOBEL!!!! - Voodoo Extreme (whatever that is) has asked Todd Howard about TESV and he answers: (sorry it's in Polish) -

""Chcia?bym odpowiedzie?, kiedy pojawi si? nowe The Elder Scrolls, ale nie mog?. Kochamy t? mark?, jest bliska naszym sercom. W Obliviona gram do dzisiaj i nadal ?wietnie si? przy nim bawi?. Mam nadziej?, ?e pewnego dnia pojawi si? nowa cz???. ""

There is a link to the source: http://xboxforum.pl/aktualnosci-f9/nowe-elders-scrolls-nagroda-za-cierpliwosc-graczy-61932.html

There i paste a text fragment that is a KEY:

"Ostatnie pytanie jakie pad?o w jego kierunku dotyczy?o tego, czy s? jakie? plany dotycz?ce og?oszenia The Elder Scrolls i tu Howard powiedzia?, ?e maj? wst?pny termin, ale nie wolno mu o nim mówi?, bo to wszystko na razie palcem na wodzie pisane. "

Finally something new!

Yeah its fine, I wasn't really sure what your intentions were at first but we're cool.

Agreed, thats why I've been taking long and frequent breaks from this thread. Come to think of it, I think I will again until Quakecon rolls around....

It is just a translated version of a section from the interview posted on the last thread:

I wish I could give you an answer to that right now, but I honestly can’t. It’s a franchise that we love and it’s very close to our hearts. It’s a game that I can still play today, Oblivion, and have fun. One day, we hope there’s another one too.

Nothing new at all.

Most of the regulars here are aware of the only legitimate theory, which is "It will be announced when it's announced," and making any other theories is ultimately pointless.

Exactly. There's nothing else to be said after this.

For God's sake. People keep asking me why I keep coming back here, it's because I hope that maybe, just maybe, something new will be brought to the table that's sound, and logical, not this ridiculous twitter feedback from what appear to be crack fiends.

Same for me, well said.

I check this forum section once in a while hoping for some new solid material but I find nothing. I remember that people were hoping for a 2009 RELEASE a few years ago. Well, it's 2010 now and we don't even have a confirmed "Yes, we're working on it.". After so much speculation and discussion, sooner or later you would realize that it simply "will be announced when it's announced". Speculating here is just a waste of time IMO but hey, if it's keeping your entertained and raising your post count, no one's stopping you. Lets hope for a confirmation at Quakecon.

Yeah yeah some of you will say "if you don't like it you don't have to post" etc. But guess what, I don't like it and I CAN post.

Some of you are interpreting Todd's comment on his team working on new technology to mean next-generation consoles. I had a different interpretation that I don't believe has yet been suggested. What if that new technology is something from ID or possibly even a new engine? I'm not exactly sold on the idea, but as I read the interview and came across that section I thought to myself, "My gosh...could they be switching to Tech5?" There are many reasons why they wouldn't, especially since they've already built a significant codebase on Gamebryo and there's tremendous benefit to staying with familiar technology. However, there are a couple factors in favor of a change. First, projecting out Gamebryo's longevity against other cutting-edge engines leaves it seriously deficient in my opinion. Bethesda may see an advantage in discontinuing an inferior technology. Second, the acquisition of ID makes their technology (including Tech5) available without license. I'm not sure what the licensing for Gamebryo is, but I'm sure it's significant. Third, if a switch is to be made this is the best time between development cycles. Bethesda may have seen an opportunity with ID's superior technology becoming available for free at the very beginning of TES:V's development: a win-win situation.

Again, I'm not convinced but the interview with Todd has made me more open to the possibility.

Well, at least they're consistent. The polish thing is basically what they've been saying since the last QuakeCon, that it's not a matter of "if" but "when" there is another TES game.

I take it to mean that there is nothing TO say. I am of the belief, from all the interviews I have read, that they spent a huge chunk of time working on the technology for the new ESV and are just now actually getting into the design stages. In other words, we have a LONG time to wait. I can't imagine an announcement this year. In fact I think it will be late NEXT year. 2013 sounds about right for ESV.
