What if this "other game" is the MMO that's been making many fans (like myself) sick to their stomachs?
Todd Howard's internal Bethesda team (the original group) doesn't do MMOs. It doesn't interest them, they have good taste. They make large, sweeping,
single player, insanely detailed/rich open world games. I hope it continues for a long while yet. As long as studios like this exist, I'll remain a gamer. My doomsday scenario is walking into a game store and seeing nothing but sci-fi FPSs, MMOs, sport franchises (although I like NCAA Football and NBA 2k) and casual, "light" fare aimed at the mobile crowd.
Given their previous development pattern and the Skyrim trademark, the odds seem to point in TES: V's favor. Honestly, I hope it turns out that way, but even if it's an entirely new property I won't mind. Just keep it interesting and make beautiful worlds to lose yourself in. They have the basic components: talented staff, industry clout and experience to keep churning out this kind of material.
Red Dead Redemption, Morrowind/Oblivion, Fallout 3. Apex of gaming. I'd throw quality RTSs into that discussion too...
One concept I think would be awesome would be an ancient East Asian type game. Oblivion felt loosely tied to a fictional medieval europe, whereas this game could infuse elements of Japan/China in that era (landscape, art, weaponry, general architecture, etc). Use oriental myths/legends as inspiration. Think Jade Empire done Bethesda style. Class wise, you could choose to become a samurai, archer, ninja, magic based variants, and more. The biggest challenge here would be to improve combat - make it feel involved. Any game with a heavy martial arts influence needs to handle fighting correctly. Allow progression down class-based paths where you learn new techniques, combos, unlock new weapon use, spells, etc. I'm not implying a walking street fighter, but you get the gist. Anyway, this isn't the correct forum. Just an idea. It's a content rich area that hasn't been explored in this type of game yet.
If it is indeed Skyrim, I'll be ecstatic. Pete Hines, give New Vegas a month or two to breathe and give the green light! :celebration:
