I'm putting my new bet on a E3 2011 announcement, late 2012 release.

I don't see an E3 announcement happening, they've said that they don't think E3 is a good place to announce games. If you're gonna stick with that theory though, Quakecon is probably more likely.

Yes, recent events prove your theory..
Let me rephrase.
I see an announcement coming a few weeks before E3 2011, on this site. A interview possibly beforehand. Then E3 2011 coverage, with a few screens, and a nice video. Then a late 2012 release.

I mean QuakeCon 2011, obviously they aren't announcing it this week because they aren't ready that doesn't mean they will never announce it at QuakeCon

That seems more plausible to me, thanks for clearing that up.

Does TESV have to be announced at an event? Or any game for that matter?

If you want any comparison to a speculative release date for Elder Scrolls V, Bioshock Infinite was announced very recently, and it's looking towards a 2012 release. For games that were not ready for any sort of E3 reveal, like Elder Scrolls V and Bioshock Infinite, I believe 2010/Early 2011 are out of consideration. 2012 seems like a really safe window to put them in.

Now, Bethesda should just release a small teaser of Elder Scrolls V at least sometime soon, hopefully before QuakeCon is done. Otherwise, I'll just be obsessing over Bioshock Infinite until Elder Scrolls V.

They could be waiting for hype surrounding Fallout: New Vegas to die down. It is being made by a different studio, but it's still a sequel to a BGS game. Sequel may be the wrong word, but next installation still carries nearly the same gravity. If Fallout is still close to the hearts of Bethesda fans, I don't think they want to overshadow that franchise with their biggest one that, quite frankly, would blow FO: NV out of the water. But, this is speculation on my part, and it may be that they really don't care about the work of other studios at all. Who knows, let's just wait and see.

Or it could just be that they aren't genuinely at a point where they have anything substantial to show.

I agree that there is a level of planning that goes into the announcement of a game, but there still is the factor of having enough material to show off.

I may be wrong here, but I think I read somewhere a while back that Morrowind was announced with a simple piece of concept art on Bethesda's website?

This makes sense. I heard a little of what Todd said, and I believe he said they finished major upgrades to their engine sometime in 2009. It's looking to have the same sort of development cycle that Oblivion did (4 years). My guess is if we don't hear from it during quakecon, expect it next year or at E3 or quakecon. Todd is making it sound like they don't have any substantial to show. Or at least at a stage where they feel comfortable it is a good representation of what the final product may look like.

I should note, I like the theory of a press release before the end of a year. Seems plausible.

Well the reason i ask that is because other people make it sound like if we don't hear something at QuakeCon, we'll hear something at E3 2011 or QuakeCon 2011 or whenever the next big show is. They may announce something before the year is out. And whatever it is that Todd and his team have been working on for the past 2 years that has them really excited, you mean to tell us you don't have anything worth showing?

...and never are. They tend to announce them without conventions. If indeed they have been working on it for two years, I would think we'll see either an announcement this fall or (and I know some people don't like saying next-gen and have decided banning the topic here is the best thing) it might actually need more polish and be announced after next-gen consoles are announced if it were to be on those machines.

So, let's say the game is announced in 2011, it could be released in 2012/2013. 2 years dev time would be long strides for a current gen game considering their history with the tech, but 2 years on untested tech would be early stage, meaning they'll want some polish on it before a reveal. Many of the comments have made me think that it will be quite some time before we see anything and we have consistently been given statements about patience and waiting long periods of time etc. Also comments regarding making sure the game doesn't "just run" on new tech plays into that as well.

Anyway I look at it, I am not expecting to have TESV in my home any sooner than April 2012.

The people at Bethesda have said bearly anything for the last four years. This has to mean that they are keeping somthing big secret.

Well, at least Pete Hines wasn't lying about announcing things at Quakecon. It just turns out that those things aren't Elder Scrolls related.

Fallout 3 took time.

I'm getting to the point of making it a goal in life to curse Fallout 3 with my dying breath. :P

So they really have been only working on it for two years, eh?

Ugh... my hopes for it being announced before the end of 2010 are pretty slim atm.

sorry to burst ya bubble but there is no evidence what so ever to say bethesda have even been making one, im kinda at my limit with bethesda and not to sound like a hater, but old fans like me get lead on to belive there will be another, there wont be and il tell you why thay wont say straight away its over because fans would be mad as hell, so thay test these other games and hope people become entranced to them and forget old games. il tell you now i liked fallout but only got that to bridge the gap between tes4 and tes5 which hasnt happened, i love bethesda but only for tes series nothing else thay offer enlightens me, and this year let me give you a list of games, black ops, medal of honor, halo reach, fable 3 smash and you think bethesdas games are gonna match them without a tes game yeh right, and over time people forget dont care and bethesda lose fans iv been a fan for like 10/12 yrs but now im getting annoyed. sorry for the big speech but its my point if thay just said we are working on it and want it out with in 3 years that would be somthing, but its a lack of respect for fans to spin and lead them on, and sum1 said once game companys are the only people in the world who can play with time tables lie without any reason and play god, and thats what bethesda is doing toying playing i wasnt expecting e3 annoucment but quake with fallout doom ect, thay wont jepordise those games sales (not like thay will get much) by annoucing tes 5 which would push all them away fact. p.s il wait till quakecon nothing then well bethesda will of lost me and probs others due to having to wait another yr wich may or may not annouce plus bringing out tes4 then fallout now fallout again comes to show thay have no intention of tes 5 fallout is their game now tes can burn up in a hole in their eyes.

I feel your frustration, Wbfe. My advice is to chill out and have faith that when Bethesda are good and ready they will drop a bomb of total awesomeness which will at a stroke remove any negative feelings about TES and may indeed act as a precursor to world peace.

You can't really think that Bethesda (Game Studios) has made Fallout 3 then had another team (Obsidian, that's right, not the team that makes the Elder Scrolls games) make FO:NV just so they can go ahead and make Fallout 4. No that's not why that happened. They had Obsidian make Fallout New Vegas so the Fallout fans wouldn't have to wait 8 years for another fallout title while Bethesda (Game Studios) is in the process of making, thats right you guessed it, Elder Scrolls 5.

You must not have a good impression of Todd and his team if you really think they are stupid enough to give up on (or just set aside for another game) a series as successful as the Elder Scrolls.

And on top of that, a few years ago Bethesda stated that "There will be another Elder Scrolls game" or something simliar. I think that was said either before or during FO3's production.

At his QuakeCon talk he was asked when TESV is coming out and Todd replied, "Don't look for a new Elder Scrolls game in the near future." He also went on to say how much the franchise means to us and that it definitely will continue. He just wasn't going to provide any timeframe on "when." This should not be news to anyone that has been paying attention. Both Todd and I have said repeatedly that, of course, we're going to do another Elder Scrolls game. The last one was enormously popular. So was the one before that. You get the idea. So do we.

That was a quote from Pete Hines a while back, referring to QuakeCon '09 I believe.
