Official TES V Speculation Thread # 62

Post » Sun Aug 08, 2010 2:30 pm

4 years they've had to develop this game

They've only been developing it for about two, unless you count pre-production, which would make it about 2.5 - 3 years.

Any new exciting news since the last interview with Todd that he said he's been working on it for 2 years?

Nope. Just the usual circular discussions around here.

I don't really buy that whole 'PS3 is hard to develop for' thing now. It's been out long enough for devs to have gotten the hang of it. If companies like Naughty Dog and Guerilla can produce such awesome looking games with smooth-as-butter gameplay then there's no excuse for anyone else not being able to do it either.

I'm excited by Todd's remarks about it looking like it's being played on a new console but the Fallout 3 GOTY edition for PS3 is a nasty reminder of how companies can get PS3 versions so horribly wrong.

That was two years ago remember. It was also only Bethesda's second attempt at it. Games are harder to develop for on the PS3; the devs said so! There is no arguing with the people that make the video games right? They know what is easier. They knew it would take them too much time to polish the PS3 version so they decided not to.

Does anyone else think that there is a chance that when he said not to expect a new elder scrolls anytime soon he ment it? Maybe they are not working on a new ES. As much as I hate to think about it do we really have any information to suggest a new game? No. I think we're just having wishful thinking here.

Todd Howard told us that he and his team have been working on a game for 2 years that had been in pre-production since the development of Fallout 3. He said in 2008 that we should not be looking for a new elder scrolls in the near future. By near future he probably meant next year or so. It has been two years and we won't see TES V 'till 2011. That is not near future in gaming terms.

The next game is a ES game. I know it. We all know it. Its probable speculation.

They also said in that same interview that they are quite far along, nonetheless.

Yes. There is recent (a week or two old) Eurogamer interview where Todd Howard tells a few important details about the production of his team's next project (presumably TESV).
There is also another article that mentions said project.
You will find them both at the first post of this thread.

Er, that's the interview I was talking about. The one he said they'd been working on a title for 2 years now, and also another in pre production. That's old news now; I'm aware of it. I meant actual news other than that.

Yeah. Any news that anyone has already read is considered old news. Even if its a day old. If you've read it, then its old. Next interview please.

The PS version will always be an afterthought, won't it?

PS3 has a crappy GPU which probably is the main source of lagging compared to XB.

The Xbox 360 uses a GPU which is a variant of the Radeon X1800 and the PS3 uses a a GPU which is a variant of the GeForce 7800. Both GPUs are already 4 generations behind and are thought as obsolete even by the standards of an entry low end PC.

XB360 GPU is not a variant of the X1800. It's a hybrid of R500 and R600 series, kind of x1900 on streroids in some departments. For example, it has edram and tesselation support. It's a way moar advanced beast than the PS3's strictly 7800-based GPU.

PS blah is better then blah
or
blah 360 is better then PSblah
or the ineveitable
well my PC is better then both of yours as I have just sold my granmother for an nvidea 2000000000000XXL graphics card, although my leccy bill is a bit dodgy

Although I can't articulate it quite as well, I have to agree with you here as this isn't really anywhere near on topic and since it has been confirmed that the next Bethesda title will be on current generation consoles it won't much matter whose console it is on since the point of this thread is "when" it will be released... the console topic was a part of that before if the next project would have been released on next gen, then the time frame for release would have been relative to that argument. It does us little good now to discuss the differences, since we are all aware they are indeed different...

You know, I believe we WILL hear about this game very very soon. In fact, I believe we will hear about it this very year.

Why? Because they're talking about the game. They wouldn't have uttered a single GRUMBLE in regards to a game in development if they didn't think they had something to show for it. As Todd said, they could come right out with fireworks and crying fans and demos and previews and everything if they wanted, but they're just waiting for the proper time to market the game. Well, there are plenty of proper times this year to market it in magazines or at events (although magazines seem to be Bethesda's preferred route).

Because Todd is speaking about it, I have no doubt we'll hear about this soon. They're just so tight lipped all the time (as they have been for the past two years) that the very fact of them uttering even a peep about it tells us they're ready to talk about it (and that Todd already told us they're ready to show it off at the drop of a hat).

I agree.

I say, when we celebrate xmas, we'll also celebrate TESV's announcement. w/ cheese.

Hmm, looks like I missed something...

In any event, I have recently added a whole slew of mods to my Oblivion game to see just how far I could push it away from vanilla, so a more rocky-road with a cherry on top. Granted it isn't an easy thing, but I just took inventory of what the game has become and it is a crazy mess that could easily take 400+ hrs to complete. This all being on the same tech that we will see TESV on. At first when Todd had mentioned it was going to be released on current tech, I was a little sad, because of the "wow" factor from TESIII and IV as they were using cutting edge tech at the time of their release. This leads me to wonder if they are going to make a truly amazing game, as it is certainly possible to do so with the current tech...

Well, I think this next game is going to "wow" us in a different way other than graphics (although to be honest I never found TES games to look that good anyway). Mr. Howard said in an interview that his team is no longer satisfied with their games just "working", that maybe they've leaned too hard on tech in the past. This tells me that they want to go the extra mile and whatever their working on now is probably going to be the most polished game Bethesda has released yet. It's going to be optimized much better than Oblivion and even Fallout, it's probably going to have the best animation we've seen in a Bethesda game, fewer bugs and glitches, more responsive control and action, etc.

I hope that your reassuring words do not take the fall of being wrong. I wish that they would fixed the animations. Fewer bugs would be nice too.
