Official TES V Speculation Thread # 63

Hey, did anybody think to wiki what a .mobi actually was?

Dig it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.mobi

I'm about to go to sleep, or I'd write more, but basically a www.website.mobi is a top level domain for people to access optimized versions of websites on cellphones or other portable devices.

a 'http://skyrim.mobi' site would typically be the mobile version of whatever the 'http://skyrim.com' website is (will) be.

The .mobi address suffix does not mean "OMG Cellphone Game" it means "boring re-optimization of a website to be viewed on a teeny tiny screen".

Chill out.

Seriously, read it yourself http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.mobi

Edit, a .mobi skyrim website might well suggest that they think the skyrim.com address is going to be so popular that people will be checking from their phones, just sayin.

Also, has anybody tried to access the skyrim.mobi address from their cellphone (probably not even a smartphone) or in an emulated mobile browser with the appropriate flags? I don't have need of a cell in my day to day, so I can't test it myself.

I just tried it on my android and it went directly to the Elder Scrolls homepage.

Does it really take more than two years to make a cellphone game?

Agreed. You don't have a 90+ team spend 2 years on a Mobile game.

Skyrim Mobile is the proof.

Proof is a very definite term I wouldn't throw it around so lightly.

Two scenarios to consider:

First, Bethesda and Vir2L plan to make a new TEST game called Skyrim. They trademark the name, register some URLs, but then the project is either put on hold or canceled. There's no reason to get rid of the trademark so this stuff just sits there even though it's no longer attached to an active project.

Second, Bethesda and Vir2L decide that they want a TEST game to come out while people are excited about TES V. (This is in addition to ZOS's TES MMORPG and Arkane Studio's TES dungeon crawler spin off ;)) This isn't a game like Oblivion mobile, it's a unique title but they want to tap the TES V excitement when it's released to improve sales. They write up a design document for the game, trademark the name, and register the site - although at this point it's too early for serious developement to begin.

If there is an upcoming TES game for the iphone whatever it's situation I'd assume Vir2L would spearhead it's developement. As with the Travels games I'm sure Bethesda would consult but I don't see it being a drain on Bethesda's resources.

I would just like to chime in and mention that while you may feel very sure of something, nothing is certain. Everything we say in here is purely speculation. In your recent posts you seem to be taking this website and using it to say that not only are they making TES V, but they are making a mobile version as well. But the thing is, none of that is any more than speculation. I'm just saying, this website isn't "proof" of anything, so you shouldn't act like it is.

That said, I wouldn't be surprised if this .mobi site is a relic from back before they essentially scrapped the mobile game Todd was talking about. It could be that the mobile game was indeed a mobile version of TES V, and they bought the .mobi site for it, but they then decided to cancel it and decided to just let the domain expire on it's own.

I corrected myself. I said it was just "wishful thinking". It just seemed a more plausible scenario, than "They are not even making TES5". I got a little excited I'll admit.

I know. Its just wishful thinking. I just can't stand the negative opinion on this topic.
They can't be working on Fallout 4 because of New Vegas.
A new IP is to risky. Considering, they just took on Fallout.
Everyone, not just us here on forums, is looking at them for a new elder scrolls.
After TES 5 I can see a new IP.
TES fans will be content with TES 5.
And Fallout fans have New Vegas.

Has NE1 done any research on the 2nd book at the copyright website? I may try later, but one would have to assume if the 2nd book is being written or already done there would have to be some evidence out there. I am at work and have no time until tonight. The company that published The Infernal City is Random House or Del Rey books.Maybe someone with a little time on their hands can plug around on the website? If this seems OT, forgive me, but I hang on to the theory that the second book is part of the hype machine for ESV .

I kinda feel bad about the id tech talk, possibly because i'm hyped up about it, and possibly because id has traditionally been by far the best friend of linux users when it comes to gaming. In bit longer run (right after TES5) it would seem obvious to try and merge beth's in-house game engine with id's renderer. Why pay for gamebryo, right? If it's not a good fit for open ended game worlds right now, i'm sure that's an issue that Carmack would like to try and tackle.

By 'copyright' I assume you really mean trademark? If so, then I doubt there will be any information about the book in the trademark database because trademarks are completely different from copyrights. As for copyright, there may be some promise taking that route and starting http://www.copyright.gov/records/. Even though you can register intellectual property for copyright, though, copyright doesn't require registration to be in effect so the database isn't exhaustive. I would expect that a large publisher like Del Rey would register their books for copyright. Perhaps someone here could take the time to look into that further.

So did we find the reason for the increase in mods? I just think now it's a matter of waiting for new vegas to come out and go away ;) then start to really wait for the announcement. BTW does anyone know if the team has increased in size since oblivion?

My own summary:

1) Most likely BGS's current project is TES5

No indications there is another IP

2) BGS will present the current project following the release on FONV. Maybe by year's end.

Beth SoftWorks already has (4) titles in the pipe which is their stated target. Todd indicated he's ready to show 'now' so its simply a matter of timing

3) Current project will use the updated BGS engine (commonly referred to as GameBryo)

Todd has stated this

4) Beth Softworks will 'not' be releasing a new mobile version of TES

Todd has stated that although id is exploring mobile gaming he wants to wait/see

Well, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that I 'smell' an announcement coming sooner than later.

I have nothing to substantiate that, of course. It's just a... I dunno... hunch?

I fervently looked as well and could not see anything, but I think the copyright has to happen when it is actually printed since that was the case with Infernal City and the copyright date on it was when it was released and not before. We don't have the trademark preliminary filing to tip us off for the book...

There seems to be nothing regarding the book. I think I will patiently await an announcement around the launch of New Vegas

I figure I might add a couple new developments to the discussion. Nothing to go crazy about, but very relevant. (I tried to search the forums to make sure they haven't been mentioned, so apologies if they have.)

#1 - PAX Prime recently released their Expo Hall map to the public, and Bethesda has two very large booths to show off their stuff this year. This most likely is for their three recent projects, but if by chance they decided to announce their "new project" in the next week (hey, things can happen), there is ample space in the two grand size booths to grow some hype at such a huge convention.

#2 - This morning's reminder at BethBlog to join up with the newsletter for "exclusive interviews, screenshots, and other exciting details pertaining to our upcoming games..." Nothing mind-blowing, but it convinced me to sign up.

If there were to be an announcement before PAX, rest assured, PAX would become dominated by the new BGS game... but I think Softworks has enough on their respective marketing plates that they couldn't handle it yet...

Im still thinking we get a book announcement in september with preorder info, and a release in late november. call me an optimist, but.

From what I've seen, Bethesda allows a full year between reveal of their game its release, usually.

Edit:

Just for reference I wanted to point this out from the http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-08-16-bethesdas-todd-howard-interview?page=3:
Eurogamer: So even id has now gone to two teams, but you guys still seem to be doing one thing at a time. Is there any appetite to change that?

Todd Howard: We kind of overlap, so Fallout 3 was overlapped into Oblivion, so we'll be doing design. We have about 90 people on the team, but not everyone is on the main game. Most people are. We spent time on Fallout 3 during Oblivion so when Oblivion was done we had a design, a concept, and some stuff running for Fallout 3 so we could move the bulk of people onto it.

Likewise with the new game, we were working on it during Fallout 3. We had design, we had concepts, we had stuff we knew we wanted to do.

But it is one big team, and the nice thing about that is it's everybody's game. We have one culture. I spend a lot of my time on the game that's in pre-production, but the new game that's percolating takes the most of my time.

Eurogamer: But you're already thinking about the next thing.

Todd Howard: Right, so we're in production on the new game, and we have a design going for the one after that.

So Bethesda currently has one game in full production, and one in pre-production (design stage).

Just throwing this out there to put some perspective on some things.

However, what I would like to mention is the importance of quest design. In most cases quests should be less dependant on "activating" a given topic and more dependant on performing required actions. Alternative routes should always be available. If a given NPC is killed, then I should still be able to take the key from his body, open the chest with important notes he/she made and utilise them. You get the idea.

I just saw this, that's exactly what quests should be like. I didn't like the "activated quests" kind of thing in Oblivion at all. Just watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YfNbPQJ5Fdc video, WARNING, HUGE MORROWIND MQ SPOILERS!!! There you see that it's possible to complete Morrowind's MQ in a little more than 16 minutes if you know what to do, no stupid quest activators as long as you do what you're supposed to do.

Edit: OOOPS, wrong thread :brokencomputer: .

There is normally 16 months from announcement to release of a game, but todd said that there was going to be the fastest time inbetween announcement and release. And he said they are ready to announce now but pete said no. So look for game announcement before the end of the year and release before christmas 2011. IMO
