Official TES V Speculation Thread # 63

Post » Sun Sep 19, 2010 8:30 pm

Come to think of it, if Bethesda actually trademarked Skyrim to keep it out of the hands of the nefarious Skyrim Wireless company, wouldn't that actually make it even more likely that they were working on a game set there? If they weren't working on one, they wouldn't care, as they clearly don't care about their other provinces. But for some reason they care enough to keep Skyrim trademarks away from this company.

You are right about this one Antibody, we have been thinking about it the wrong way I would guess. If Bethesda was not going to make a game about Skyrim then why would they care about some low budget Wifi company?

They would have also made a High Rock trademark if they were worried.

EDIT!!!

Are we certain that the "SKYRIM wifi" website is real and not a domain owned by Bethesda with some phony looking wifi company to cover it up until the game is announced?? It looks kinda iffy to me..... Just sayin.

Notes of interest: There is a skyrim.com and a skyrim.net, both appear the same, and if you type in skyrim.org it takes you to elderscrolls.net. Weird.

I am absolutely positive that they are real. They have an office in Florida and provide wifi access to several business on the beach, whose patrons frequently complain about the lackluster service they provide.

I am definitely not buying the whole Skyrim wifi conflict. Unless the wifi company is planning to release a game bearing its namesake, there's little reason for Bethesda to protect themselves. And as others have already stated, the lack of consistency with protecting all their other IPs further weakens the wifi argument. Also, Pete's response to Sylt's email was a pretty typical vague answer that really doesn't say anything definitive. This has already been discussed quite extensively about 15 threads ago.

It's really three mods added at once. Their invites all went out at once but it took a bit to get everyone (they're geographically spread about).

The new mod discussion started in late June (actually it started in April, petered out in early May, and then started up again about six or seven weeks later). Even if you discount the early pvssyr this was a two month long process - hardly the pacing one would expect for an imminent announcement. :) As I've explained here and in the new mod thread we also have tangible reasons to add new mods right now - although I will admit if there's a BGS announcement in a few months having the extra hands will be nice.

Using the new mods as evidence of a coming announcement is rather like like pointing out the forum overhaul last March as evidence of a big announcement. Oblivion's announcement and unveiling was preceded by a huge forum overhaul, Fallout 3's unveiling was preceded by a big forum update, and now we've had another big forum overhaul! Unfortunately the overhaul was really to keep the place organized as all of these new Bethesda published titles were brought on. It was also planned about nine months beforehand (the admin first told us that this was in the works in June or July 2009).

I think at this point it would be best to keep the new mod pvssyr to the http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1112501-welcome-new-mods. If someone posts a collection of TES V portents and new mods are involved that's not a problem but there's no reason to have a discussion singling it out in here.

Anyway, Todd has already said they're pretty much ready for an announcement, that's better evidence than new mods. Although I suppose if you want to argue that seasoned mods would be more helpful than green ones they may be evidence that an announcement isn't imminent and in fact is more likely in late 2010 or early 2011. :hehe:

My bet is that they will reveal TESV by having GStaff change his avatar to the TESV cover art, and then he posts in this thread saying: "I know something you don't know."

Or just a GI cover... :sadvaultboy:

I agree whole heartedly. To me, it is sheer coincidence that they were trademarked near each other in time and there were so many other things out there with the Skyrim name before and after that it really isn't about the silly wifi company. I honestly expected an answer like I got (well actually I didn't expect a reply at all), but it was the same as basically not getting an answer as that really is the point of trademarks, to protect interests...

However if it was a surival horror game about a small town terrorized by an undead hippopotamus that's probably fine.

I so hope they do this, it would be the most hilarious thing if he did that and no one noticed until they had to come out and blatantly say what was going on lol.

Is there a reason why skyrim.org leads to elderscrolls? This seems likely to me that they will be making a skyrim website in the near future, although I am no expert, but it does seem wierd that they would link that site to the elderscrolls one?

Edit: Nevermind, looks like somebody took the website name... not a good sign.

Double Edit: http://Skyrim.mobi takes you to the OFFICIAL TES PAGE. Hmmm...

Which means somebody bought it and linked it to the official TES page...

Hmmmm...

Triple Edit: Somebody, meaning http://www.networksolutions.com/whois-search/skyrim.mobi. That page has all the info on it about it being Zenimax's copyright and everything.

If they don't use it by December 10th they lose the right to use it. And this was done June 2008, putting it right near the "two year" mark from... well... right now. Interesting, no? I'm expecting an announcement this year. :)

And a little whois later...

I know something worth knowing...
Now if there were just a reverse whois (all domains owned by) I could REALLY fuel the flames.

Owner is... pretty much who most of you hope :)

skyrim.org is... NOT. That's registered out of Eurasia.

[edit] So from what I gather Zenimax set up skyrim.mobi in 2006 near when they took the copyright to skyrim...

This information is quite interesting...

But why .mobi? That domain is for websites intended to be viewed on mobile devices. What would be the point in buying that just to link it to a .com?

Plenty of reasons to use a .mobi domain. Look at what else Bethesda is doing. I suspect that address will go hot and unique about the same instant as they admit they are making TESV.

Linking it to an existing .com is probably more of a "placeholder" than anything.

What bothers me about the Oughton comment (other than the problems it caused here on the forum!) is the timing involved. Let's assume that their next game is TES V - well presumably they would have known early in it's production whether they were going to upgrade the TES IV/FO3 engine or overhaul it. We know how that they went with the overhaul, or perhaps even a fresh start with a newer version of Gamebryo, and therefore would have known the game would take a while. Therefore the 2010 comment seems out of place.

If I remember correctly, he hoped to ship it 2010. Games have always delays and hoping is very positivistic verb, so he could've and should'ev said 2011/2012 Q1 to be realistic. And I don't think he spoke based on some design schematic - at that time he must have known in some detail what BGS is developing. If he didn't, I'd be a little worried about their publishing department. :shakehead:

Skyrim.org is owned by one Viacheslav Erofeev who is credited with working on Additional Quality Assurance on the Shivering Isles expansion.
