Does anyone happen to know how long WOW was in development before it was released in beta?

..oh and so I don't get slammed with "hey this is the speculation thread" posts, I am trying to add it to a list of other popular MMO dev times to create an average because I believe there may be market saturation issues if TESV is released and not enough time passes before the "Zenimax MMO" (aka TESMMO) goes into beta along with potential ties... whether you agree with where I am heading or not (divining potential release dates from potential release dates of the MMO and finding the mean), I like to use data with historical precedence to speculate with if for no other reason than my own fun... but I have conflicting data on the WOW dev time and didn't know if anyone else might be able to help me.

SyltStryder,
World of Warcraft was first announced by Blizzard at the ECTS trade show in September 2001. The game itself took roughly 4 and a half years to develop, and was in beta for over a year.

On topic:
I wish they'd interview Todd Howard again soon, I want more goodies, and maybe he'll slip this time.

I hope an announcement comes soon (by soon I mean within six months). Everyone thought 2010 would be the year it would all happen. One thing I know is that after seeing all of the crappy titles that get churned out every year, TES:V will be worth the wait. I have to hand it to Bethesda for taking their time. There could have been multiple TES games released since Oblivion, but Bethesda knows that games like TES need to be big and awesome.

I agree. A new interview would be nice. However, I get the feeling that they rehearse interviews pretty far ahead of time. For example, I bet there's a protocol dictating that whenever "TES" or "new project" is mentioned, they go into lockdown mode and say things like "We're not ready" or "We'd like to tell you, but we can't".

I don't think it will be announced before TES V is announced, if Bethesda is smart, at least. TES V will likely be announced first and the MMO announced a few months later, just so there is no confusion over whether or not the MMO is TES V. And you know as well as I do that if they announce the MMO before TES V, the vast majority of TES fans, who have no idea of the difference between Bethesda the developer and Bethesda the publisher, will think the MMO is TES V, and chaos will ensue.

A heavy weight title such as Elder Scrolls V will at least need at least a year for marketing and hype. They will have to announce it this year probably holiday in November imagine announcing Skyrim on Christmas( lol, or what ever else they are working on), They would then say stay tuned for screen shots on new years day or something like that. The first trailer we will see is going to be a super bowl trailer and have an announcement for game play footage at E3 2011. Before E3 you have a gameplay trailer at GameTrailers or G4 TV as an exclusive reveal with that you release your other titles such as Brink and Hunted name in the loop and hype tension higher. When E3 hits, BAM you drop a 30 minute demo say the game will either hit August or Holiday season, I would imagine August to get away from heavy hitters. I think perhaps they are waiting to find out when Diablo III drops so they aren't over shadowed. If they are going to do an MMO as a stand alone product you would probably announce at year after Guild Wars 2 comes out to wade out the craziness.

I don't think it will be announced before TESV either, but I am thinking about working backwards from release date of MMO and then back again to TESV release and then back again to TESV announcement, but right now I am just gathering dates and marketing data from other releases.

Let's see...
So FNV was officially announced in early February 2010. The release date is October 19th/22nd 2010

Beth said that when they announce their project, it will not take long until it's in stores.
My guess is: if it's announced November/December this year, it will most likely be released in late spring/early summer of 2011. At least I hope so...

Perhaps it's different because it's being made by obsidian and only being published by gamesas?

I think that is a bit optimistic. I interpret Todd's comment on the length of time from announcement to release as about a year, give or take a couple months. Also, I am more hopeful than certain that it'll be announced before the year is finished.

To be honest, i dont expect TES V untill spring 2012 at least, You shouldn't hope on a quick release, because your probably end up whining there to late ect

Well considering the game is far enough along in development to be announced right now, and also the fact that Todd Howard said it will be the shortest time for bethesda to release a game after announcement... I'd say it's fair to expect an announcement this year, and the game out by next year.

New Vegas was announced in April 2009. Not that New Vegas' announcement and release date can even be compared to TES V...

Anyhow, I'll have to agree with most after having perused this chain of threads for some time. We are on the fringes of an announcement, my friends! I just wish it would happen so I can anticipate something more concrete.

I doubt it. I suspect we're in for a bit of a dry spell after all the information we've been given recently. If you're asking about an announcement, then the answer is almost certainly no. 99.99999999% no.

As said before, we should not expect anything out of expos. Bethesda doesn't use them to announce games as far as I've seen before. Morrowind and Oblivion were both announced on the official website before being (in just a week or so) shown in a major magazine. The first time we hear about TES V, it will be right here, on this website.

We didn't... It's the famous Paul Oughton quote, and it's safe to say it won't happen. Not unless Todd was grievously understating how serious he was about his next game having a short announcement ---> release time

What prevents them from doing something like posting on their website "Hey guys, TES 5 comes out....next month". Because if anyone could get away with it, it would be them. And I know if I CEO, I would that that was funny and I would probably do it.
