What is the "hey guys" comment? I really don't get it.
It's the short version of, "Hey guys, we're not telling you a damn thing."

It's the short version of, "Hey guys, we're not telling you a damn thing."

It deffinately seems weird that NB would just come in here and give us such an out-of-the-blue, completely random comment like, "Hey guys." He knows how we would take it, and he knows that everyone would be all "OMG THAT MEANS HE'S PREPARING US FOR THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF ESV!!!!"

And with how tight lipped Bethesda is about their next upcoming game, why would NB want to incite such excitement like that? That would almost be a breach of contract (or something), and he'd probably get reprimanded for it by higher-ups.

... Or he could just be [censored] with us.

Its a joke from earlier in the thread.
Hey guys. I'm curious. Do devs ever post here?

Devs usually lurk more than anything. On rare occasions you can see one looking at the thread, but never posting. And for good reason to. Lord knows how many pointless posts a single word from a dev could cause us to make. For example:

Dev Joe: Hey guys.

Post #1: OMG TESV IS CALLED HEY GUYS

Post #2: TESV DEV JOE PLZ TELL US SOMETHIN BOUT IT

And so on.

Hey guys.

The Valve game is Dota 2. Its just a feature article at this point. Not a cover story. It might not get a cover. GI usually does far-reaching, popular games as their covers. And maybe I've just been living under a rock or something, but I've never heard of Dota before. After reading the article on the game, I found out Dota is a PC only real time strategy game. That just doesn't seem like a GI cover worthy game to me. Also the article has a lot of negative comments from a lot of people, including some angry Half-Life fans. I doubt Dota 2 will get a GI cover, but that's just me...

But it's not often a game is announced exclusively on Game Informer's website. To be the first ones to announce it, but not have an upcoming cover for it, seems kind of odd to me.

Let's be real here, this is a pretty good opportunity to get a cheap laugh if you're developing the game - all these people hanging on your every word, etc. He'll probably just post a single random word like "coconut" next and sit back and watch people try and work out the hidden meaning behind it.

Who knows there reason for revealing it on GI though to say with 100% certantiy the next cover is going to be dota2 is perhaps even more iffy than esV being announced next month. We know nothing about dota 2 at all and just because they are revealing it doesn't mean that they are going to have a cover right away. , anyway this isn't the dota 2 speculation thread.

I think we are definitely 1-2 months away from announcement. The "Hey guys" comment just seems evil and unnecessary if a TESV game is a long time away, so my guess is that its not.

He's not that much up to date.
Congratulations, you were successfully trolled by a community manager.

In fact, a large part of the people talking about this got trolled.

Good job, Nick Breckon, you're the best community manager ever.

The dev cycle for them begins with guessing what technology will be out when they plan the release. (Read somewhere that they always try to "push the envelope") So the question is what kind of new technology they will incorperate.

My guess would be motion sensors and maybe also 3D graphics. But if so they would have to postpone the announcement until the console market has the HW to support it...

It may just be that he was laughing at previous posts about him and stop anymore being posted for a while.

This is speculating that the current speculations have no real basis however it has been rather funny.

They've already been working on it for 2 years, they aren't holding out for anything.

And who told you they've ever announced it through Game Informer? Because they haven't. Ever. They always announce it online first, and then at some point afterward they reveal the Game Informer cover.

This is only half true. The official Oblivion announcement was done on-line but the GI cover was revealed as part of the announcement, not at some point afterward. In fact the announcement was really just "TES IV: Oblivion is in developement and you can learn more about it in the next issue of GI." I'm pretty sure FO3 was unveiled the same way but I'm not 100% sure of that.

I think the more interesting question is whether New Vegas' unveiling, which was spread over a large number of international magazines, is the format we can expect for Bethesda's new title or not. On one hand New Vegas had been previously announced and it's not a BGS title, on the other hand it's part of Bethesda's IP and it's announcement was handled more "in-house" than most non-BGS games Bethesda publishes.

I'm lost as to why they just don't make the announcement, if they're working on it.

Economically, why is it such a big deal? Why couldn't they have told fans they were working on it a few months after Oblivion was released?

the technology they would have been developing for is now officially current with the release of DX11 so when ESV comes out it had better blow the competition out of the water, I am almost certain the game will be close to photorealisitic if not completely photorealistic. If Gran Turismo V can hit photo realistic on cars Bethesda can do it for environments.

Motion sensors like the Sony wand & Microsoft Kinect? I'm pretty sure the 3D part (not counting the display) is just a software update too.

There is a pretty huge difference between photo-realistic cars in a racing game and photo-realistic bushes, trees, water, & wildlife all moving in a giant sandbox game. There will be an improvement but I think we have to be a little realistic on what to expect.

I feel the same way... they're probably under the impression that announcing it before New Vegas will affect its sales, but honestly... who is gonna go "oh ESV looks sweet, i'm not gonna buy NV and instead save my $60 for a year to get ESV when it comes out!"

Optimistic view: ESV is so groundbreaking that it'll make NV look very weak in comparison, so if people see it before they buy NV, they will trash NV for being behind the times. Even so, like I said, the two come out about a year away from each other, 99% of people are gonna get both anyway.

Pessimistic view: ESV won't be ready to release for another 2-3 years, so BGS doesn't want to announce it too soon, especially with Todd's comment that it'll be the shortest announcement/release window.

Don't get your hopes up. Games like Gran Turismo and Killzone 3 are photorealistic because they're in much smaller environments. ESV is open world, so you really can't compare it to those games. And when Oblivion came out, the graphics were good, but not the best.

And even if they release screenshots of ESV being photorealistic, that still likely won't be how it will look when it comes out. I remember thinking Oblivion's graphics were amazing when I first read about it, but when the final game came out, it wasn't as good as they were made out to be. That's the case with most video games... their bark is bigger than their bite so to speak.

All that being said, there is no doubt in my mind that ESV will be groundbreaking and an incredible game. I will be first in line to get my copy. I'm just a pessimist by nature.

Yes, but it will trounce both :)

I always thought that, along with Todd (I think) talking about how far along they were with production of said game, the announcement won't be too far away. Stay optimistic! :)

[Edit] By "said game" I meant whatever game he was talking about, as it could be something completely different - but I am the eternal optimist to your more cautious pessimist :P

Well we've talked about this before but I really think it has to do with the workload of Bethesda Softworks and that they are waiting until the media machine is done publishing NV so there is room for the mammoth amount of effort they will have to put forward to market TESV effectively. I have gotten over a dozen tweets today from promotions for FONV... they are in high gear right now... no room for anything else!

actually there isn't really a difference if you want to be technical one could define photo realism as this "A style of painting that resembles photography in its meticulous attention to realistic detail.". I think it's going to blow us away like never before

Then why would they even have a TES V Speculation thread or for that matter bother to keep the ideas and suggestions thread organized with the occasional developer stalking it. If that were they case they could just close down these threads because it would put less of a strain on there servers. Everybody knows it's coming, it's probably one of the worst kept secrets in the gaming industry. We know it, Bethesda Softworks knows it, everybody knows that it's going to be coming.
