Official TES V Speculation Thread #71

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 8:18 pm

Just want to throw in my speculation that 25/10/10 is too early for Bethesda to announce ES V. Fallout although developed by a seperate entity is still under the same corporate banner as Elder Scrolls. Short version they will want to market their new product first and foremost and maximise returns. (especially with Christmas not all that far away)

This has been the focus of a lot of discussion so far. I certainly understand the feeling that announcing TES V in the build up to FONV's release or in the first few weeks afterward would overshadow it. However others have felt that FONV would probably be bolstered by the news more than anything else and that argument makes sense too: it doesn't make sense that someone excited about TES V would decide not to get FONV - if anything the opposite would be true. Bethesda's PR and Marketing team may not want their hands full with a major release and a major announcement but that has more to do with internal logistics than concern over one negatively affecting the other.

I think the issue is moot actually, I don't think Bethesda will announce their new game until early 2011 but its for reasons unrelated to FONV. We're at the tail end of a long and productive con season and if Bethesda didn't want to announce it during the con season I think they'll wait until it's comfortably died down. Of course by the time it has we'll be entering the holiday season which is also quite busy which then bumps us to January at the earliest.

Whatever Bethesda is developing will get a huge amount of attention regardless of what it is but why announce in November or December and compete with the holiday releases when they could wait a little bit and have the media all to themselves. Also, given the positive press FONV is already generating a big announcement as that starts to lighten up (again, after the holiday season) may be a nice boost.

Dang, ninj'd by Hungry Donner. That's got to be like a special kind of ninja'd right? :toughninja:

I can afford to only ninja the best :hehe:

But the people on the fallout forum tell everyone everything they find out without caring about spoilers, the tes forum is far more considerate.

What do you guys realistically think the graphics will be like? I posted this in another thread, but I was really disappointed by the graphics in Fallout 3. I think Elder Scrolls would be a perfect game to implement photorealistic graphics like Crysis, but that is nearly impossible with a game as huge as ES.

So do you think it'll just be a small step up from Fallout 3, or do you think they really did completely revamp the engine to give amazing graphics? My only worry is even though they reworked the engine, it's still the same engine that did Oblivion and Fallout right?

P.S- This is the correct place for this right? I mean it is speculation...

The visuals will be a step up from Fallout 3, but I don't think the environments will be radically improved. As long as they are more vibrant and colorful, I'll be happy (getting a little tired of wastelands).

Details like LOD scaling (such as better visuals over a longer draw distance) and shadow quality will likely see advancements.

Mostly, I'm just hoping for better NPC animations. This is something Todd himself has said he wasn't satisfied with, so it's likely to get a good overhaul.

I believe NPC animations was in the list of things that were ripped out and completely redone. Also I would really expect the graphics to be a huge jump, and I have my fingers crossed for a better region generation tool.

On graphics: Todd said in an interview that when you play the game they're working on, it make you feel like you have a brand new console. Obviously that means jack [censored] for PC users, but it's an indication that the game they're currently making will look significantly better than any of their previous ones.

Technically we're just assuming, but it would be kind of a dike move if it turned out not to be ES, and Bethesda knows that. They know we're all looking forward to ESV.

Characters will look like http://img839.imageshack.us/img839/7437/skinshadernew.jpg

Or at least they should since it's a newly developed really cheap skin http://www.gamedev.net/community/forums/topic.asp?topic_id=585052

But anyway, they'll announce it whenever they feel like. Which is when Pete thinks they'll get the most bang for the buck. It'll be out between end of 2011 and early 2012 unless there's a big unforseen delay, and honestly we only care when it's announced so we can gush/complain about stuff. After all, if there's no info there's little logical backing to gush/complain yet now isn't there?

Me too but I really doubt it'll look that good. It might work on a smaller game that's level based but ES is a massive, free roaming, seamless game world.

You shouldn't go buying any new pants in anticipation though as I am afraid our current gen consoles won't be able to do both a great ES game and that level of character models, but it would be nice!

Actually they can, I've seen some amazingly hi-rez low poly models running on the 360 and ps3. It's just a lot of tricks to get the polygons to render right and that takes a lot of time development wise.

I am not saying that it can't render that, I am just saying that it can't render that and run the open world RPG with all the back ground processes needed for an Elder Scrolls game at the same time. That just isn't in the machines capability, unless they have created some simply astounding code that substitutes for the hardware.

Yep, it was first announced on GameTrailersTV, the week before E3 2009. I remember hearing about some big announcement from Bethesda, but then I saw that and I nearly put my fist through the TV.

.....Dun, Dun, Dun! Enter id TechV, that's very much open world and proves my point. If Bethesda Get's a hold of Mega Textures they can.

Secondly the Video Game Awards on spike does seem like an interesting time to announce the game.

Indeed. While pointless and trashy as all hell, the Spike TV Video Game Awards have become kind of like a mini E3 in terms of game announcements.

I was always under the impression that the only games shown at the Spike TV VG awards were pointless, two hour long shooters with lots of blood and swearing. And sports games.

Except Todd Howard said that they wont be using id Tech 5 for their games. That could change in the future though, I suppose, but they'd have to figure out how to make it so that they can create their trademark open worlds on an engine that currently, according to Todd, isn't good at that.

I thought the Next Game ? wasn't going to run on idTech5 but on a heavily revamped Gamebryo engine?
