Official TES V Speculation Thread #83

JUST TO MAKE SURE EVERONE KNOWS......BETHESDA GAME STUDIOS IS CLEARLY NOT MAKING A MMO.
http://jobs.zenimax.com/index.php?a=search

Just click all the boxes and search all the job openings. Use "Edit and Find" to speed things up in your toolbar.

SCROLL DOWN AND LOOK AT "CONTENT DESIGNER" AND "LEAD CONTENT DESIGNER". It specifically spells out that ZENIMAX is working on a high-profile next generation MMO.

NOW THAT I GOT THAT OFF MY CHEST.

Does anyone notice on this same link that BGS is hiring a LEVEL DESIGNER, QUEST DESIGNER, GAME PROGRAMMER, ANIMATION,CHARACTER ARTIST,SR WORLD ARTIST AND TECHNICAL ARTIST. ALL FOR "NEXT GEN GAME THEY WILL BE WORKING ON.

OK, so this must be the game in "pre production" which leads us to believe that the game they have been working on is almost finished, since it appears that the team is looking to expand for the other NEXT GEN Pre-Production Title that Todd reffered to in the interview. When I say ALMOST FINISHED, I think they are very close to announcement and very excited to start cashing in and putting effort into the next game in pre-production.

I really am sure the game that is almost finished is ESV, since they have a lot to show, the recent rumor, the hype, and the timeline, this thread being open and on #83......Definitely not a MMO....and definitely close to finished. Announcement coming quickly and probable for a release sometime next year. I bet when Todd said the shortest time between announcement and release will be really short with them throwing a lot of money at hype. Notice they are also trying to add to the marketing team(SEE LINK).

Just my 2 cents and probably means nothing at all, but shows a growing company with a lot more on their plate than ES.

All job listings always say "for next-generation products." Many of the listed positions (all the actual making stuff jobs, basically) could apply just as well to a title thats well under way.

Looking at their job listings is pointless. They almost always have the same exact jobs listed. You aren't going to discern anything new from these job listings because we already looked at this same list of job openings earlier this year. All we know for certain is what we were told in the Eurogamer interview Todd gave back in August, and anything else is just unnecessary speculation.

why would Todd say soon when its clear he ment after the next ice age? seriously tho I think Beth are preparing staff for the next wave of consoles/PC titles, at least one or two games for launch ( I know that they are not in development yet but whats stopping Beth starting new worlds with their new engine!).... I hope that this secret game is TESV and not another game, I really think I will burn my ps3..., Im assuming that Beth are keeping this a secret because its that obvious of what it is?

Sorry if this is off topic I just need some clarification of whats going on everyone seems to be going around in circles myself included :)

Who wants to work for a company making LAST generation games? Job postings are not merely informational but are also worded to attract the most talented candidates, which is likely why Bethesda uses the term "next generation" in their job postings. Like trademarks, job postings don't offer detailed information and should not be examined too deeply.

I think "next-gen" is now just a term used for "high quality".

New news, At least I hope so. I don't see any reports yet in this thread on this, but here it is...

http://www.product-reviews.net/2010/11/30/elder-scrolls-5-v-new-engine-for-2011-release/

And the GamesAbyss link:

http://www.gamesabyss.com/editors/2010/11/29/elder-scrolls-v-bethesdas-next-venture/

Not sure how reliable this information is...I'm still looking for the original source of Bethesda's new game engine....

EDIT: It looks like so far a quick search just points back to the August 16th eurogamer interview of Todd Howard...ugh, sorry, I've been gone a little while from the forums, heh

Yes I suspect they were referring to when Todd mentioned that the FO3 engine had been tweaked.

Thank you for the link (and I'm glad it's not another Eurogamer Denmark spinoff). That said, however, I think it's just a highly-speculative piece based mainly on http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-08-16-bethesdas-todd-howard-interview?page=1:

Actually you know, i don't think it would be a bad thing if it is portrayed as a "new engine". The amount of people that don't understand it's the same engine revamped heavily.... they just will see Gamebryo and be like "ZOMFG BETHESDA YOUR ENGINE IS SERIOUSLY OUTDATED!!!!"

I for one would warmly embrace a new engine with melodies of joy and thanksgiving. However, I think it's misleading to call it, from previous interviews, a new engine.

Yes I caught that after I posted haha, from doing more research. Glad to see you're still here Stain. How's the thread been lately? Any new news since E3 I missed? I stopped looking here just before Quakecon.

Hey, welcome back (sorry I didn't notice it was you at first). The thread has, unfortunately, deteriorated into a lot regurgitated discussions among newcomers neglecting to do a little research before posting. There has been a tremendous upsurge of new posters, especially whenever hype builds for some transitory point of hope. However, most of the other regulars (antibody, syltstrider, mr. tissuebox, and a few others) have worked hard to try to keep the sanity.

There are a few interviews linked in the first post and the Eurogamer Denmark article (which is suspect in my opinion). There's some consensus that January looks to be a promising time when we can reasonably anticipate an announcement.

Thanks, Stain, although I feel like I'm slightly guilty of that sin just now, hehe. I too believe the hype train has started steaming to higher speed now again, after the disasterous hopes that were e3, PAX, and the tradmark issues...January huh, well I look forward to new news then.

EDIT: Any news on teh next book? I woulda thought that would be announced sooner than later

So, I asked Pete Hines the other day on twitter this "So, any clue as if will hear about an ES game before or after you announce the MMO? an article in 08 said you wanted a title in 10"
and he responded back with this statement

"I could tell you exactly what we're gonna announce, and when. I'm just not able to. Things will become clearer before too long."

Todd has never, ever said they are using a brand new engine. For a year or more after Fallout 3's release, all we knew about what Todd and his team were doing was that they were revamping the Fallout 3 engine. Unless they decided to scrap all of that fairly recently, they are not using a new engine. I wish these news sources would get their facts straight for once.

I feel I should post my excepts from Electronic Gaming Monthly's interview with Todd Howard again:

==================================

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1118503-official-tes-v-speculation-thread-68/page__view__findpost__p__16443867

So I went down to Borders to find the new issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly and read the interview with Todd. Wow, that was a really good interview. So good, in fact, that despite sitting down and reading it all in the store, I still bought it just so I could read it again in the future. I suggest anybody who loves Todd or just loves Bethesda find it somewhere and read it. It's about 5-6 pages long.

Here are some quotes:

Interviewer: So are you happy with your progress [on the next project] so far?

Todd: Yeah, it's awesome, I'm ready to show it. It's a much bigger jump than Oblivion to Fallout 3. Much, much bigger in terms of fidelity, stuff on the screen, everything. I'm hard-pressed to think of a part we haven't ripped out and replaced. Rendering, animation, AI, interfaces, everything. New scripting language. We would take chunks out at a time, rework it, and put it back in. We need to have a stable codebase that's always up to prototype things.

And here's that part Controlled Chaos was talking about where Todd "almost let it slip:"

Todd: [continuing]...But I still sit down to play Oblivion, I sat down a couple weeks ago to play Shivering Isles, just to play again. I have a lot of fun in that game still.

Interviewer: I remember you told me a while ago, that before you make a new game in the Elder Scrolls series you go back and play all the previous games.

Todd: I don't play them all, I'll go back and look at them.

Interviewer: So it may have been just coincidental you were playing Shivering Isles?

Todd: No it- it was coincidental.

Interviewer: We're not giving anything away here?

Todd: [Smiles a knowing grin. Politely refusing to speak.]

Interviewer: Okay. You have to be careful what you say to me, because I remember everything.

-Interview ends-

I personally don't think he came close at all to letting it slip. Seems to me it really was coincidental, even though he's almost certainly making TES V.

And he talked about how hard it was making Oblivion for the next console generation. Part of what he said was:

Interviewer: Speaking of, shipping Oblivion for the new consoles was tough.

Todd: Yeah, that was a rough time. That was a mad technical rush into the unknown for us. We definitely had our ducks in line to try and make launch. We found out there's a good reason people don't do 200-hour RPGs for console launches. The fact that we only missed by 4 months is...

Interviewer: It's pretty remarkable!

Todd: I think it's remarkable, to be honest... Before they launched, we probably had final hardware for four months.

Anyway, those quotes are all a really small part of a long, really good interview. I highly suggest you guys go read it.

==================================

So, yeah, while they're heavily revamping the engine, they haven't actually gotten a new one.

Oooh, now that's something! Back in August, Todd said he did not want to give an announcement timeframe because it was not set in stone yet. But now Pete Hines says he could give us exactly when they're going to announce it...

:celebration:

This only improves my hopes that we will hear some news soon, and hopefully before March!

If they have a date set in stone, that is very good. That could mean they are very far along in the game, and it could very well mean we will see an announcement sooner rather than later. Excited I am.

I'm pretty sure that we can write off the VGA's. TESV probably won't be announced there.

Pete's tweet is intersting, obviously they could tells us something but I think BGS is waiting for the right moment where hey everybody's bored lets announce Elder Scrolls V.

Well if they have a date set in stone then they really can't control whether or not it will be announced at "perfect" time.

I agree that the VGAs seem like a long shot, but of course they always seemed like a long shot. I have a good feeling that either the February or March Game Informer cover, revealed in early January and early February respectively, will be TES V. Most likely the March cover.

Wow Antibody, I'd never seen that interview you just reposted, awesome stuff there, thank you. AI, Animation, Interface... this will definately be awesome!
And can someone confirm if Pete's twitter is real? If so, that really got me excited, seeing that they have a date set is wonderful. But the question remains... WHEN IS IT?! FOR [censored] SAKES!

This whole thing is making me mad :celebration:

About damn time it's December 1st. In a couple weeks we will have GI January's cover announcement, and once it's out, luckly, there will be a page just like that "A Survivor is Born" giving us a hint for Feb's.

When they have a set date, that means it's not too far in the future, at least. And at least Pete Hines didn't deny it, even when the asker's tweet specifically mentioned Elder Scrolls.
