Official TES V Speculation Thread #83

Post » Sun Jun 13, 2010 9:25 pm

That hinges on the fact Bethesda was actually so paranoid about a simple wireless company making a game called Skyrim that they filed for their own tradmarks and appear to be filing for new ones indefinitely. Either that or Bethesda somehow knew their next game would be taking place in Skyrim way back in 2006 when the trademarks were first filed, and they really were tying to protect their assets.

The realistic thing here is that it is more likely than not going to be Skyrim, the important thing though is that there is precedence and precedence within Bethesda especially of an announcement and then an application for a mark. My initial post stated that it MAY not be in Skyrim... it is just that the mark is no longer an indicator of anything relevant in my book besides a possible game title. The wifi mark was certainly close to the original Skyrim game mark...

wonder if the picture in the background is anything to do with the new game on twitter page? or can someone tell me this is just some artwork from Fallout newvegas? http://twitter.com/bethblog

I'm guessing it's for Rage (HD?), it's not from New Vegas unless it was concept art.

Rage for sure... and I doubt that is concept art, that looks in-game.

The recent comments on trademark issues are actually quite enticing... for one thing it is possible that when TESV is revealed, the location of which may be a complete surprise to all of us. Or, it may just be one of those things where we are all, "I knew it! :D" which in that case it would be set in Skyrim.

just what I said. todd didn't say such a CLEAR thing. he spoke about a secret project, but didn't mention TESV. so my question is : where todd did say that he was ready to show TESV but cannot show it yet ?

No, that is NOT "just what you said." Below is what you said:

I'm a little lost here, when and where todd said such a thing ? is there any link ?

How was I, from this amorphous blend of vagueness, expected to determine that you were referring to my assumption that the game about which Todd was speaking was TES:V? The next time you would like to call me on an error, be more specific and I will respond reasonably.

Actually, what's interesting to note is that Trade Marks have been a fairly reliable prediction method and are often more reliable than what the rumor mill suggests.

I don't see much of a benefit from Bethesda announcing it at the VGA's. It would get a lot of talk but thats it and it could be overshadowed (Never) by some other game thats announced. Plus Bethesda doesn't announce it at big events they usually do it by themselves or with a GI Mag cover which if they do the later it won't be until Feb at the soonest.

Well if they are planning on announcing it at a big event then perhaps that says something about just how huge the game will be.

Back when Pete Hines said he doesn't like announcing at big events like E3, I'm sure he probably considers the VGAs as the same type of scenario. As strange as it seems, I think a tweet is the best bet we got now. But, hey, watch me be wrong.

Wouldn't it be weird.....ish if they were getting extra money to have their own event?

There should be a completely Bethesda, or probably Zenimax, show. I mean, hey, with all the games they are publishing and all the developers they are acquiring, it would make sense. And of course it would be the perfect time to announce games.

I get a very strong impression it's Skyrim. In fact, my impression is so strong I'd be surprised for Skyrim not to be the next TES V. The Skyrim trademark is there for a reason, if it's not for TES V, for which game/anything else would it be for? For a trademark to be dated since 2006, it better be important, and what is most important to the TES franchise than a major instalment? I'd be surprised if it was for a spin-off. Plus the first TES book following the events of Oblivion talk about the destruction of Morrowind and an Argonian invasion. Since Skyrim shares a border with Morrowind and the Dunmer folks are probably already used to deal with Nords because of Solstheim, I'd say it's logic for Dunmers to either try to seek shelter in Cyrodiil or Skyrim, they have no choice and Skyrim is a strong possibility. Since to me it would be logic for the books to foreshadow the events of TES V and the Morrowind disaster it would make sense, and with the Nords dealing with Dunmer and all that politic thing around it, I'd say it would build a very strong premise to a new TES entry.

As for the announcement, as much as I'd like it to be announced during the VGAs I'd be surprised. We all know Bioware has something up its sleeve, and it may not be the best idea to announce it at the same time as another rpg from such a renown developer who are still working on a very well selling franchise. It may not hinder much, but has far as pure hype? It would be diluted a bit, if people digest the Bioware announcement and then a month later Bethesda announces TES V, it would have a much bigger impact. While Bethesda would announce the sequel of an highly acclaimed game 5 years after the last, Bioware would probably be announcing the last chapter of also a very acclaimed trilogy.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Zenimax already funding QuakeCon?

Wow, this thread is really picking up speed. I really hope the game is announced by the end of next January, and it seems like things are pointing towards an announcement soon, though I, like many others here, I am inclined to doubt the Eurogamer report.

Haha, this is nothing compared to what it was last summer. We were going through 2-3 threads every day (maybe an exaggeration) before E3, and similarly before QuakeCon

Probably. I guess QuakeCon is essentially that now, but it was something that was around a long time before Zenimax acquired id.

Bethesda already said somewhere that they wanted Quakecon to basically remain id's thing and were going to respect that.

I've been getting the idea that Bethesda is not too fond of conventions in general when it comes to making announcements. Pete Hines said E3 wasn't a good place to announce a game. I think they're much more comfortable with announcing games when they don't have to compete for attention.

Sometimes I wish Bethesda wasn't so random...

I think if they were gonna go through that trouble, they'd say "pay attention to our blog/site"... they ALWAYS announce it officially first, afterall.

Given the current trademark situation, I'm not personally optimistic on February. I can't imagine Bethesda announcing without a firm indication that they are likely to get the trademark (at least the published for opposition stage). Currently, the critical trademark is stalled. I'm somewhat surprised there hasn't been a documented response (although I'm not sure whether that would be public), but until the trademark's status moves forward, I just don't see it happeneing. Ducks in a row and such.

They won't get the trademark until well after they announce the game because until they can prove its use in commerce the trademark will always remain as just an application. In fact, most games' trademarks aren't registered until after the game is released. The whole trademark subject, while interesting, is not a very useful medium for probing detailed information. Beyond generalities, trademarks really don't provide much information.

Bethesda shouldn't have any problems getting the trademark for the name because they used the name Skyrim in Oblivion and they could say that the name is copyright for that game and that their next game will be either using the Name Skyrim or its going to be in Skyrim.

Yeah I'm 99.9% sure that they won't announce it at the VGA's. By having Bethesda announce it on its own terms people will talk about the game more. I'll give an example Bioware could have announced Dragon Age 2 at this years E3 but they didn't they waited until the middle of July when it would be featured on a GI cover. If they would have announced it at E3 it might have gone under the table because of other games at the time like New Vegas, Black Ops, etc.
