Official TES V Speculation Thread #84

Post » Thu Jun 17, 2010 8:18 am

Geoff Keighley has just put this on his twitter: "How far into the future are the VGAs going? I just reviewed a piece that says "coming 2013" at the end." How would everyone feel if that was ESV?

edit: http://twitter.com/#!/geoffkeighley

"Time between announcement and release will be the shortest for us". ESV would be released less than 2 years after announcement, I think.

But honestly, looking back on it now, that could cover a lot of ground. We were just swept away by the hype train and didn't think very logically.

Yep I remember. And all the people who said that it could be DA2 were flamed. And there was much "I told you so" being slapped at me when they were right.

However, it is true that of all the major franchises, I can only think of a few that people have been begging for at length. Half-Life and TES are on the list, but scant much else that will ever happen.

Also, Duke Nukem has been announced. Like over a decade ago. So it's unlikely that they'd do that.

Februay=Cold....
Elder Scrolls V=Skyrim
Winter announcement obviously fits from a marketing standpoint.

It seems you've forgotten about the Southern Hemisphere. Anyway, I doubt BGS would make an announcement for a game just because the season is similar to the settings climate.

2013= PUKE

Really doubtful though. 2012 at the very latest for BGS next Big Game. that would be 4 years since FO3.

And 76 years since TES:IV. With the popularity of TES, and all us rabid fans, I don't think BGS would wait that long.

Oh god, yes please! All I want is confirmation that it's coming. If they promise it's coming, that it's been in the works for two years, and will be for at least another two... wow. That's going to be one awesomely polished game.

HaHa.....Reaching my friend. This thread is becoming a sad state. I actually think that the date will be a random date circled on Pete's Calander that fits in their busy schedule, but who knows? I guess this is what speculation really is about. I really don't think that when the announcement is revealed that NE1 is going to say....WOW....That date represents this or that......It will just be known as the day Beth announced TES V.

Exactly. I just want Beth to give us a little scrap of meat, so we can speculate more... I enjoy speculating.
I still think Feb is a sensible choice, I can feel it... Its close.

Yeah, people are acting like the Speculation thread has descended into petty little talks about nothing, but to be honest...it's always been that way. I'm sure the many of us who have been here since "The Official "when and if we'll get TESV" Thread #1" know that we have little more information now than we did a year ago.

These threads have been locked and reopened again and again, warnings have been given, and so on. But somehow, this thread has survived all the way to #84. Let's just be a little less serious about this and continue waiting for an announcement.

(this wasn't pointed at you, Ni, just the people who keep complaining about this thread)

Remember what Todd said about it being the shortest time between announcement and release for them. Even if they wanted to release it in, say, January 2013, we wouldn't get an announcement until it was less than 18 months from then, which would mean announcing it at the VGAs wouldn't be work.

All throughout 2010 we got announcements for games that won't be out until 2012 or even 2013. Bioshock Infinite, the Fallout MMO and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 were all set for 2012 releases as soon as they were announced. Devil's Third was initially announced for 2012, but was pushed back all the way to March 2013. My point is, not only does a game being released in 2013 not necessarily mean it's TES V, but it can't be TES V, if we are to believe Todd.

What is the general opinion about TES V being announced at the VGAs? Are most of us saying that it will continue just being a GI reveal? Zenimax is growing fast and I can see them trying to announce their biggest projects at the biggest events regardless of tradition.

It's possible Bethesda could surprise us and announce it at the VGAs which is a way they've never announced a game before. But like someone said before, it's good logic that I think that Bethesda would want to announce ESV separate from the VGAs in early January for a huge bombshell.

Well, I myself acknowledge that it is possible but find it very unlikely they will break from tradition.

I think it's possible, but just not very likely. I wouldn't mind being proven wrong though.

No, my point of posting was to see if people were going to think that TES V is going to be announced sooner rather than later, but as things are going that much is almost certain.

It was at a press conference Bethesda held in London specifically to announce New Vegas.

I'm sorry to say this, but anyone who thinks that the Feb GI cover is anything other than Duke FORever has the same IQ rating as a glass of water.

When TES:V is announced it will be on the official site first then followed by a press release. It's looking like March '11 will be the earliest we hear anything.

Must be one smart glass of water...

However, it's equally likely that they'll attach the announcement to a blimp and fly it over the Niagra Falls tomorrow.

Checking the first thread I can find, the first post was this:

Looking at Bethesda's Skyrim trademark, they applied for it in November 2006, but got the Notice of Allowance in July 2007, about 8 months afterwards. For Morrowind, it was 5 months.

So if they don't announce it before July 31st 2010, and the trademark goes dead, there's going to be several months that we'll be waiting for them to register and get the NOA for a new trademark, because they have absolutely no other TES-related trademarks.

But on the bright side, that makes it even more likely that they'll announce it soon.
That was in March, thread 22.

By Antibody.

We've had so many theories and predictions, with perfect reasoning across the board, and none of it has turned out to be right. But whatever, I'm as much of a conspiracy theorist as the rest of you :P

Yes, I remember that. That was back before I, encouraged by all the calling SyltStrider was doing, decided to call the trademark office and find out this:

Good news! Well, bad news in that we all should feel like idiots, but good news otherwise.

I just got off the phone with the USTPO, and they told me this, and I'm summarizing here:

Bethesda doesn't need a Notice of Allowance to use the trademark in commerce. Once they file for it, they are protected. If someone else wants to oppose it, the USTPO bases who gets the trademark on who filed for it first. The Notice of Allowance is issued by the USTPO as a way of telling the company that they can now use the mark in commerce, or extend the expiration of the mark, however the company can use the mark in commerce and file a Statement of Use BEFORE they get a NOA. They don't need the NOA.

So, essentially, the trademarks expiring means nothing if they can simply file for another mark, like they've already done with one of them, and use the mark in commerce as soon as they file for it. So the good news is, we wont have to wait months or even a year for a NOA, but this also means that, as long as they file for more trademarks to replace the old ones, they can announce it any time they please, meaning we have no idea when they could announce it.

I stand by my "We should all feel like idiots" remark. ;)

Wait a minute, you actually called the trademark office? That's dedication. I can't think of anything I've ever anticipated that I'd go past Google or a friend of a friend to get info about.

I remember that, too. Back when we used to check the trademark website every day. We all did a lot more stalking than we do now.

Might they do that once more? Through all of the times that Bethesda Softworks has announced through GI they have been relitivily small. I find it likley that with Zenimax growing and Bethesda publishing more than just BGS games that they might change their strategy to something more open to the common gamer. Not just the guys that love games so much that they subscribe to all of the magazines.

In other words, they might have held a press conference one year to get more attention than just a GI cover. This year they could decide to announce the game at the VGA's as they will get more press there than at any press conference they could hold without the press already knowing about the game so they want to see more.

Not sure if that made perfect sense.

Antibody, Stain and SyltStrider went out of their way for the thread many times, they are one of the biggest driving forces in this thread and have been so for quite some time now. This post is an honorary salute to all the hard-work you guys put into this thread

Hahaha, I think this thread is slowing down because we honestly don't have to go off of right now.

At least we've calmed down about that whole Eurogamer thing... we're like seagulls for every scrap of info...
