I hope you're wrong. I don't see any reason for a 2012 release when they have already stated the mystery game (should it be Elder Scrolls) was far along in development and ready for announcement already. I'm still thinking we might have a holiday announcement, and a late summer release. If it were released in late August like Daggerfall*, that is almost 9 months of promotion which would be plenty for a game as highly anticipated as this one among it's player community.
*I acknowledge that Daggerfall's release date has no solid bearing on this one as company that made that game is largely (if not totally) a different one from this game. I don't believe Todd Howard was even working for them back then, let alone all the young guys and gals they surely have on staff now that were 10 year old when that game came out. I just dropped Daggerfall's name because it's not out of the question for them to release a game in late summer.
(TAKE THIS WITH A GRAIN OF SALT)
IF what you think here is true, and IF they are indeed this close to announcement and release, then be prepared for insane craziness from the gaming news industry. Don't hate me for saying this, but think of the dominance they could have in the gaming community if the next long-awaited elder scrolls series game was announced and then the release date was 6-9 months after. If they released the info on the game gradually, but in very large chunks during that short period of time, I'd imagine that definitely would be ALL that would be talked about during the 6-9 months. They would take over the gaming magazines and game news sites. It may not be our favourite way as fans to get the information and announcement from them, since its been so long since the last elder scrolls game, but this announcment and quick release (should it happen) would be comparable to declaring war on a country, then immediately dropping the nukes, and then declaring the war over with the other country devastaed by the surprise attack. (It's called a Shock and Awe strategy)
That shock would be similar to what they could accomplish should they do the announcement and quick release. Otherwise, the longer they wait after the announcment to release, the more people forget and the less excitement there will be. Look at other games we've known to be coming for years and yet there still hasn't been a release, due to delays, or they announced too early, etc. I may be crazy, but I think their marketing office are probably evil geniuses. I know we hate their tactics but love the end results.
