Wasn't there a big stink about some screenshots for Obibion getting out before Beth wanted them to, and they got on the leakers pretty hard because they had an exclussive with a different magazine?

So I'm thinking that GI has an exclussive with Bethesda for the announcement. That way, Beth makes moeny instead of spending it for an announcement in the Super Bowl (my original speculative theory). So, they can get money from GI for an announcement, spend it on a Super Bowl video release (my new speculative theory).

I don't think that Thief 4 is a game that has been begged forever. It isn't as mainstream as Elder Scrolls.
Personally I love Thief series, but I don't think it is one of the games that could be the cover.

I certainly wouldn't rule it out, though. I think that an announcement will come soon, but not at any of the things we've stated. They just don't seem like the kind of thing they'd do... but a cover is a definite possibility, but there really are a lot of games that have been wanted for ages, Thief included. TES isn't the only wanted game...

Remember the cover is a game that hasn't been announced yet. Thief 4 was announced.

I would have to respectfully disagree with this assertion. The Thief series (which I love as well), is nearly as old as the elder scrolls, and is quite popular, not to mention it has a large modding community to this day. Plus, a lot of us have been wanting a proper sequel for a long time, especially after they crapped all over the franchise with TDS. Not to say that I don't agree with you 100% about it not being Thief (it won't be), I was just citing it as an example (although, except for the "announcement" part, it does meet all the other criteria you listed). My main point is that Bethesda has been kinda toying with us for years, and I don't think I'm quite ready to get my hopes again (although I have to admit that recent interviews are swaying me a bit).

Case and point: remember when they announced the books based on the TES series, and people were rabidly posting on the forums "convinced" that TESV would be announced within weeks, if not months? I just don't think it will actually happen until sometime towards the middle of next year. However, I will happily eat crow if it does.

Oh! We shouldn't forget the 4 pages on Jan's issue about Elder Scrolls. Why bother writing an article if not to rise the hype and prepare for an announcement?
And I know that have been moments that we thought TESV would be announced, but if you look back the "evidences" supporting it were slim, now take a look in what we have now, a lot of things points to an announcement. I remember when we were debating whether TESV or Dragon Age 2 was going be announced. We got Dragon Age 2, but we were pretty sure that Dragon Age 2 had a bigger chance of being announced, the only thing supporting TESV was the tweet that said the next cover would be fantasy-ish. Now, we have not just ONE but 4+ tweets that can support it plus interviews and stuff.

It also seems that the "big AM reveal" Geoff was referring to was U3, which I personally found pretty underwhelming. Looks like the "T" really was a mistake (or Thor, as someone else suggested).

Would make sense to me. Hype the game with the book. Release the book a month before the game just to get people really rabid and in the mood for some TES and then drop the game like a nuke.

Eidos has been amazingly more demented about how they have handled the Thief 4 reveal, and it sometime feels like the fans (myself include) are close to getting nasty with Eidos Montreal over the lack of any details whatsoever (or at the very least, announcing the game too early). I almost wish for the days when people thought a new Thief game was just a pipe dream; it felt a lot less painful, lol.

However, it does make me think that despite all the toying, Bethesda is being much smarter with their IP than EM is. As Thief has shown, if you throw a starving dog a bone, they will rip it to shreds, and if you can't feed them something else, it won't take them long before they start thinking about turning on you. So, at least I can take comfort in knowing that whenever Bethesda does make a reveal, that they will have plenty of tidbits to show us all the way to the release. And with 4 years (and counting), I'm sure they will have something nice to show for it.

If we've been 'begging for it 4ever" then it must be a sequel. And since all of our guesses are sequels anyway (TESV, Half Life 3, new Mass Effect etc), his answer wouldn't really give us anything new.

Anyways i believe a VGA announcement is possible, but there's more of a chance of an independant announcement by Bethesda themselves imo, with a first look from Game Informer.
