Official TES V Speculation Thread #88

I could not help watching that video from Gamekings again and they clearly mention that this secret RPG that will be coming in 2011 will be announced this coming week.
They also mention that they are not talking about Diablo3 or DA2.

Hey All,

First time poster, long time lurker (and I mean a damn long time)

This news has got me excited but i've learnt never to get my hopes up because most of the time the annoucement is blown out of proportion. I would love a teaser trailer at VGA (i don't care about bethesda track record, things change) and I would love to see it in the february GI issue. But i've been here before... I was so sure about quakecon, E3 and the "interviews" confirming a 2010 release date.

This time is no different, i'm going to play devils advocate here and say it won't be announced for a long time and if i'm wrong... Then I couldn't be more happy about being wrong.

Has Doom 4 been offiicially announced yet? I remember hearing about it at quakecon but it wasn't "ready" yet so that might explain the whole 4ever thing... It's been a long time since Doom 3....and its Doom 4.

I really hope it isn't Duke nukem forever...I've read that awesome summary post by...some guy...which proves that it's unlikely to be the duke. But it just fits too well...I'll be sick to my stomache if its duke. I swear.

It can't be a sequel to a recent game. The 4ever just wouldn't fit.

It doesn't. A couple of people on here have the issue already... Nothing foreshadowing is found in it.

That said, i'm still looking forward to when i get it!

I was reading an article on G4's site, and i came across this...

"Next to Kingdom Hearts 3, there is a game that everyone keeps asking for: Star Wars: Battlefront 3."
found http://www.g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/709074/gaming-wikileaks-the-biggest-leaks-in-the-video-game-world.html#ixzz17fKTvm2m

obviously Battlefront isn't an RPG, but both it and Kingdom Hearts 3 could be what Reiner was talking about

Yeah it doesn't. But the question is, why bother doing a recap of TES if not to build hype?

Well Todd does say this "We've always treated the world of Tamriel as a real place, a place you can make a difference in. It's the connection of the people, the Empire, and their gods. How does one affect the other? Do we, the people, hold our destinies in our hands, or are we part of something larger? That idea is embodied in the Elder Scrolls themselves, which speak of the past, present, and future in one voice." -Todd Howard

It's on the 3rd page.

In addition to the 4 page spread about Elder lore, I've noticed that the ES series has been mentioned in some way in the past 8 GI releases.

That probably doesn't mean anything significant, or anything at all, but I thought it was a little weird.

But has it been mentioned on a four page spread before?

EDIT: Nevermind, I didn't notice that you said "In addition to the 4 page spread..."

all i remember is the Gears cover (i think) where FO:NV was being previewed, and it said something like "Where are you going? the Elder Scrolls games are in the other direction" on one of the screens...

One thing to take note that Skyrim trade mark is a Pseudo Mark,

Snipppped.

What i got from that is:

If the game's title is "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim", they only need to trademark the name "Skyrim". Pretty standard stuff really. If i'm wrong i shall delete my post for mis-informing the masses on said subject of trademarks.

I hear alot of speculation about the new TESV following on the heels of Oblivion, and people saying they dont think enough has changed since the Oblivion and the book, ( which is now considered to be Cannon for the game BTW), for it to follow directly on the heels of Oblivion, but this is not true during the game Oblivion this was being discussed among the npc's and now references in the book talk quite a bit about it, and this is the breakup of the empire as troops are being pulled out of many of the provinces, and the general lack of might with which the Empire is able to show in any one of the provinces, this in and of itself would make for a glorious story in which to play our next TESV, not the collapse of the Empire, but the saving of one or two of the most needed provinces maybe, like a return to Morrowind or Daggerfall, all at this time is pure speculation of course but this was for those of you who think there is not enough for a story between Oblivion and the books time frame, (some 2-3 generations later), this of course is just my opinion.

Is a pseudo mark a common way to trademark something you're trying to protect? I think I remember someone at Bethesda saying they have those extra trademarks to protect their intellectual properties.

Okay, so I think we could all use a quick recap of some of the noteworthy tweets and other information we've encountered so far and any implications they may carry, so here's my attempt at reconciling all of them into one post. If I've missed something, don't be afraid to correct me. The hope is to come up with a quick-reference we can use so we're all on the same page, including any newcomers that are bound to jump aboard the speculation train over the next few days/weeks. Don't want to read all this? Scroll down to the bottom of the post for a summary of the conclusions this information has lead us to make.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/MrTissueBox/status/12638964678664192: @Andrew_Reiner Is the next cover a game that was already revealed or not?
    http://twitter.com/#!/Andrew_Reiner/status/12710489284939776: @MrTissueBox Nope!
    - Implication: It's kind of murky, but it's very likely Andrew Reiner was responding to the first portion of MrTissueBox's question. We had a whole discussion about it back in Speculation Thread #87, but eventually we all agreed: people tend to address the primary portion of the question. If he was trying to respond to the latter portion, it wouldn't make much sense. Uncomfortable English would be unlikely from an editor.
    - Conclusion: The February cover depicts a game that is unannounced, at least as of December 8th. It's possible that the title could be announced between then and the cover reveal without falsifying his statement, so we can't rule out anything announced at the VGAs, but anything that was revealed before the 8th isn't in the running.

Thanks for this helpful post... I just wanted to say that I think you're underselling that bit of information - the only possible murkiness here is because I confused the issue for some not so good reasons (unfortunately, I often have a bit of a tin ear for interpreting disjunctions.)

yes and no, it's basically to prevent confusion among IP.
