Official TESV Speculation Thread #74

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 9:32 am

I think we're looking at this too much.

December? That's too cliche. Happy Hollidays, here's an announcement. I expect a random-ass March or April release. Just for the hell of it, no special reason.

Pfft. Who gives two [censored] about cliche? I just want the confirmation and announcement.

But those periods of time are so small that Bethesda waiting for them seems very unlikely. As Redek said the only time when there is usually a lack of big games coming is the Summer and there's no way Bethesda will be waiting to announce it then.

November, January and February all have big games set to be released during each month. December, on the other hand, doesn't. If Bethesda truly cares about announcing the game when no other big games are coming out, the best time to announce it would be December.

What game(s) are coming in January? I know Portal 2 is coming in February.

It better be December...

The waiting is personaly killing me, i might have to check out these novels to hold me over.
Would you guys recomend them?
The lore is the reason i think many of us love TES in the first place, the fact that i could pick up a book in game and instantly be immersed.

I'm willing to bet anyone who wants to lose $100 that their new game is NOT TES V.

The Novel although slightly cliched are a good place to keep any Elder Scrolls fan happy for the most part, however! Don't be surprised as to how much of the actual lore is expanded and rewritten to an extent.

Well, Cataclysm is set for an early December release, and I'm pretty sure several million people across the world are anticipating that game. But December certainly does have less big game releases than the other upcoming months. If that's a factor they're considering, then I guess SyltStryder is right about a mid-month announcement, possibly later, after the WoWheads have calmed down a bit.

I wasn't aware. Currently my chart-o-release-dates has December at being pretty barren, but then again I haven't been following gaming news much lately so I wouldn't have known about any new December releases to be announced in the last month or so, including Cataclysm.

What game(s) are coming in January? I know Portal 2 is coming in February.

Currently the only games coming out that I'm personally keeping an eye on are Venetica, Dead Space 2, and Two Worlds II, but there are still a lot of games with "Early 2011" dates that will likely get lumped into the first few months at some point.

Nope, it's still only set for a Spring 2011 release.

No, I don't think so. I thought it was coming in spring...

Nope. Just usually right about things like this. I'm sticking to my 3-game theory. Bethesda will have 3 major open-world games if they release a completely new game. That will allow for one quality game per system. Elder Scrolls, Fallout and whatever their unannounced game is. Add on top of that, Todd Howard told us, not to expect a new Elder Scrolls game in the "near future" about a year ago. You can interpret "near future" however you like but I think it means that it is not in production. Of course they'll make another one but not until there's a new system.

Somewhat off topic, but how bummed will you guys be if they announce their new game and it's not an Elder Scrolls title? :sadvaultboy:

I'm used to decades of no news, delays, and closely guarded secrets. I'd just "meh" it off. Waiting for new Legend of Zelda games has given me that skill.

I don't think that's right-thinking. By "system," you mean... generation of console? So one game per generation? That's no way to bilk the gamers. No sir, I don't believe it.

Waiting for new Legend of Zelda games has given me that skill.

There's been a steady flow of those since the series began. Like every four years. Less, if you count the hand-helds.

actually, that's not entirely true...most video game production is 36 months, when Todd says NEAR FUTURE it means that they aren't even finished with production yet or were in pre-production, in other words a lot could happen between production and post-production. When Todd says we have a lot we can show it probably means they are in post-production or at the last stages of production. So assuming they went to work on the elder scrolls title right after fall out 3 and kept New Vegas in stealth mode so nobody would think twice we can look at it this way. In 2007 they announced Fall Out 3, sooner rather than later it was on the shelf. We can conclude that since the end of 2008 they have been working on there next game, and pre-production work was probably done while they were working with fall out 3. A team of 90 people, 45 working on fall out 3 and 45 working on elder scrolls, finish up with fall out 3 you roll in about 30 people and leave some for dlc and then roll in the rest after the dlc is finished up so you now have a team of 90 diligently working on there next project. A team of 90 is more people than blizzard has working on there next gen mmo at the moment so they have a lot of content in what ever there next game is. Let's not forget that they said there was potentially going to be an elder scrolls title in 2010. Royalty return can take up to 18 months so they might be waiting for that to happen before they push out there next game.

Within 18 months we should have a pretty good idea of what's going on as that's when all there royalty from New Vegas will start rolling in and not just part of it.

I'll always have a small bit of doubt, and it will persist until the game is announced. I guess I've turned into cynic after all the disappointments. But in my opinion, it's much better to be completely blown away by something you weren't expecting than to be pleased by something you knew was coming all along.

You got moxy, kid, but until you rustle up some facts to support your gut feelings, I'm not inclined to believe ya.

Firstly, the quote from Howard about not expecting a new Elder Scrolls generated enough negative press that Pete Hines went out and countered the statement saying that it was out of context, saying they merely weren't ready to discuss announcements. This was after Quake Con, in August 2009. That is not only "about a year ago" but just over a year. If they announce a new game in the next 6 months, I doubt that falls under anyone's expectations of "near future," especially considering they would want to keep attention on their more current projects. In fact, Howard's first statement might have been in response to reactions to this quote from Gamasutra on June 25th, 2009 from Pete, "On the flip side, Todd [Howard] and his team have their hands full with The Elder Scrolls and Fallout.'

Also, this article states that the domain name for "Elder Scrolls 5" has been blocked.
