Official TESV Speculation Thread #75

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 3:48 am

I don't understand the marketing strategies behind not announcing any game as soon as it is being worked on. more time for the game to spread word of mout, wich is almost always better advertsing than commercials.

Has it occurred to you that perhaps the lack of information has generated just as much or more buzz and speculation than if we'd been bombarded with information since 2006? Just look at how active this forum is. You're honestly concerned people aren't going to know when it's announced or that people have lost interest in the Elder Scrolls?

Like that tall, dark, mysterious boy that every girls wants to get to know, it's been hiding in the shadows, being all sixy and conspicuous in its absence.

Best marketing strategy of all time.

Since they'll have a lot to show, they should dedicate a Gameinformer issue to nothing but TESV and nothing else.

...which would sell so well, because everyone likes TES enough to want to read an entire issue on just that. We would, but those who are not fans of the series (aside from probably having a hole or two drilled through their brain) would be bored, and probably upset at the magazine if they had already payed for a subscription. It would be like how I would feel if they dedicated an entire issue to nothing but Halo (which I am not a fan of).

exactly. a magazine, no. three or four five or six pages? hell ya.

and this goes onto the 'do you see the buzz..." comment, ya, WE keep this forum active, but the average PS3 Oblivion player doesn't even know that it is part of a series, and is puzzled by the "IV" in the loading screen.

For all you know it could be this time next year before it's ever released. So even if they announce it tomorrow, there'll be a long time building up to it - shortest time ever for an Elder Scrolls game between announcement and release, sure, but still a year. Is that so hard to believe? It probably won't be that long between the announcement and the release but I get the impression that Bethesda understands the concept of marketing. This is a series with a massive following which only continues to grow with each new installment. It's continuing to grow in popularity because it's that damn good, and it keeps getting better. I'm not the least bit worried about the next installment. I'm actually really excited it's taking so long. Masterpieces take time.

Summerset Isle
There is some speculation that TES V will take place in Summerset Isle, due to various rumors about Daedra Worship increasing and a boycott of Imperial goods in Oblivion (although it is important to note that there are several equally 'significant' rumors about events in other provinces in Oblivion, namely Black Marsh, Morrowind, Orsinium, Elsweyr and, of course, Skyrim). It is possible this could follow the pattern set in Morrowind, which had rumors mentioning trouble in Cyrodiil. But of course, this logic also holds true for all the other provinces mentioned. (And again, it is worth noting that none of the events mentioned in rumors about Cyrodiil in Morrowind actually occurred in Oblivion; only those prophecies which spoke of general plot events, namely a Daedric invasion, not specific to Cyrodiil)
In fact, it was rumored that TES IV would take place on Summerset Isle, due to developer comments from before Morrowind's release, but those proved to be untrue.
In terms of gameplay, Summerset Isle would be a convenient choice because it is surrounded by water, providing a natural boundary to the playable game-world, much like Morrowind had by taking place in Vvardenfell and not the mainland area of the province. In Oblivion, the invisible walls at the edges of the mostly land-locked Cyrodiil were a cause for complaints by some fans, from http://www.uesp.net/wiki/General:Speculation_on_TES_V

... What?

Since they'll have a lot to show, they should dedicate a Gameinformer issue to nothing but TESV and nothing else.

*Pulls out latest Game Informer issue*

...112 pages

Anything more than 12 pages would be overkill for a simple preview, so I think over 100 pages is ludicrous.

Wouldn't such an issue of GameInformer be a dream come true for Elder Scrolls fans, though? :P

Well, I'm assuming the January issue will be their usual "best of 2010" stuff. So I expect an announcement (IF it is by GameInformer) February the earliest.

Yes it's getting rather spammy lately but that's the way it always is, sadly. It gets spammy for a few days, a mod chimes in to get people to take it town a notch, we have a few short days of relative piece, then the spam kicks up again. It's been this way ever since we thought that Game Informer cover was going to be TES V and it turned out to be Dragon Age 2. Now speculating is more popular, but most of the time the speculating people do is just spam. Nothing we can do about it now except get used to it. Hopefully it doesn't get to the point where a mod has to lock the topic to calm everyone down like they've done so many times in the past.

If you look at their past January covers, that isn't the case. They always (or for the past couple years) have a game cover in January.

I scrolled through this page, saw that you used the word scrolled in a sentence, and thought about making a pun off of "scrolled" and "Elder Scrolls." Then I was like "That wouldn't be funny at all, really, and would be a useless post." If you want to get a better idea of what the joke would have been, simply insert ELDER between "I" and "scrolled" in my post, then read it. See? Not very funny, really.

What was that about this forum getting spammy?

To me waiting for an Elder Scrolls game is like getting an ingrown toenail removed. You want it out as quick as possible, but you dont want them to make mistakes that will cause you pain and grief.

How was Oblivion announced? I just visited the Elder Scrolls website one day and saw a big "IV" on an intro screen, but was Oblivion announced before they updated the site with pictures and videos?

Do they now? If this number was drawn from, well, anything (copyright laws, for instance) then please explain, if not then thanks for throwing a number out there.

I would think that it is more of a virtual scale, many people believe (including myself) that when the heat dies down from promoting Fallout and the rest of the published games that they may start to promote TES again.

Guys, I just noticed something, heat has died down from the published games, compare how much we hear about Brink and the other published games to before, there were weeks when we got 2-3 Brink articles per day. I'd say that this is definitely a look-out sign for an announcement, I'm beginning to actually get my hopes up for an announcement again...this feels so depressing :sadvaultboy:

I was just thinking about something, the Elder Scrolls website mentions about the first Bethesda Podcast (funnily enough the one where Todd talks about his new project) But it doesn't mention any other of the Podcasts. Since its an Elder Scrolls website most of the stuff they post there will be Elder Scrolls related. So does it sound strange that they only mention the Podcast where Todd talks about his new project (could be a hint to TES V), Or am I going nuts and reading too much into things?
