It also talk about Bethesda filing for a trademark for an Oblivion movie, which tells me they don't really know anything substantial

I would love for an announcement or some word at least from Bethesda but hey if they don't say anything its not a big deal it just means they aren't ready to show anything or make an announcement :gun:

aaaaand, maybe the one girl was telling the truth, but we're still no closer to pretty much anything (announcement included)

That girl was pretty much disproven almost immediately after she posted here, thanks to some fine detective skills by myself and others.

Hey wait, where in the Eurogamer thing did it say "direct sequel?" I see it in all the other pickups of the story, but I don't remember it in the original.

EDIT: never mind.

I'm not positive, but has Bethesda squelched rumors? If yes, diring what period? Prior to their PR campaign, during early development?

I remember them speaking of exclusives regarding Oblivion, and getting pretty upset when stories broke before they were ready - to the point of having thsoe articles removed (memory foggy)

With that in mind, their silence is also something to consider.

Everyone is going crazy with this "direct sequel" stuff. Todd said that Elder Scrolls games don't require you to have played the previous to understand it.
Of course it won't be some kind of Oblivion 2.

Destructoid, probably the second most popular "indie" gaming blog (behind Kotaku), has picked up the story as well.

That was sarcasm outside of the end of the statement. Its all word of mouth, and nothing else

I agree. After the QuakeCon misquote debacle, they made a blog post refuting the misquote and the unfortunate MMO rumors. So...

Well, it is possible that it's a mistranslation or mistake. But aside from "it's being made" I figure we'll figure everything else out later. And damn has this story been like a shot in the arm for this thread, eh?

Jesus. Every time I F5 it goes up at least a page. These rumours are spreading like Wizard's Fire. Unfortunately it comes at the price of no one reading the posts and reposting reposts. T'is all in good fun I suppose.

Though since someone asked, it's still going to be Gamebryo. However, it's going to be built again from the ground up like they do with all TES games, and as stated in interviews it's "Like playing a next generation game."

That's because saying that you had "abandoned" TES would have been disastrous for PR and their community, so it would have been dangerous for them to not counter that. This rumour, while it is spreading faster and wider than any rumour about TESV that I've ever seen before, is not exactly substantiated in any quantifiable degree by Bethesda's silence -- it is simply not in their interest to confirm or deny such a rumour, as it was with the "abandoning TES for years" comment.

Wow, considering how much this leak has exploded, it's really shown there's a hunger for a new TES. The time to announce feels right to announce it soon, and I thought it was just us on the forums that were clamoring for it! It seems the whole industry backs another one!

Holy [censored] IGN and about 15 other minor places just reported the same thing.

This is going viral fast. Something is definitely up if IGN are now reporting it.

Hahaha, and who was it that predicted this would spread like wild fire! If it's spreading this fast and it's not disappearing and it's officially started on the 5th birthday of the xbox 360 something fishy seems to be going on as of now it's a day after the xbox360's birthday. It is now on gamespot as well folks!

From when I first posted the eurogamer link to this site and when it expanded daaaaamn it's spread fast.

guess what site doesn't have it yet? GAMETRAILERS, wonder if that means something.

Also IGN and a few other big websites aren't even acting as if its speculation.

IGN- "Get ready to return to Cyrodil!!"

Another website also mentions that they commented Bethesda regarding the rumor. "When we contacted Bethesda for this story, a rep told us exactly what we expected to hear: "We don't comment on rumor and speculation."

Probably nothing but thought I would add it in.

You know, this is really a sharp lesson in why marketing is so tightly controlled. Some people in Bethesda's department have got to be hot under the collar about this IF IT IS TRUE because now a lot of misunderstandings are starting to pop up on line. Look at what is happening with a few unsubstantiated lines from a possibly poor translated leak, and now the people on the threads on half the sites are convinced that the next game will be Cyrodiil part deux instead of what a sequel always has meant in this series, a new story in a new location with little need for knowledge of the prior games. I suppose this could result in their having to start off their campaign countering misinformation like this, though I guess at the end of the most likely massive marketing campaign most people will have heard the correction, event he most casual gamers.

Also about the engine, I really wish we could just link the interview with Todd where he clarifies that it is a total rebuild of Gamebryo, it would be so much easier.

Can't say I'm a huge fan of "returning to Cyrodil" though I'm open to it. I'd rather have returned to Vuardenfell in 2005 but having had the time to roam Cyrodil for years now I'd love nothing more than to explore the unique landscape of another part of Tamriel. I don't think I'd be alone in preferring this.
