Official "The Infernal City": An Elder Scrolls Novel

Post » Fri Oct 09, 2009 11:16 pm

Thanks, lady. You reminded me of this.

Toel is a clear and obvious symbol for the male obsession with violence/dominance involving penetration. You penetrate the body with a weapon to kill an opponent, therefore dominating them. As Attrebus says, six is another means of domination. Why? because the man penetrates, thus psychologically proving himself superior because the one who penetrates is the one who wins. Who says this is YA stuff?

Sorry to diverge away from the worm-six topic, but I wonder if the presence of the Synod opens up the possibility for a healer/priest guild in TES:V. I don't know about you guys, but the Imperial Cult was one of my favorite guilds in Morrowind.

I liked the Imperial Cult quests too. What's interesting is that Titus Mede has apparently torn down institutions such as the Mage Guild and the Blades and started over from scratch -- not just a name change. My question is why. He seems to have found power lying in the streets and picked it up, working his way from warlord to Emperor. Was the Mage Guild that badly destroyed that Titus had to start over?
We'll probably know more when the second novel is released.

I haven't read the book yet, but it seems like they shook things up more than any of the previous games have. Destroying MW, having a new emperor take the throne by force etc. etc. Almost a shame that they didn't make this into a more linear adventure game a la Battlespire or Redguard. Kind of like Beth is wiping the slate clean for the next run of games...
Good idea or bad idea?

So, what is the General Consensus on TES novels? The guys over at The Imperial Library don't seem to like it much from what I've seen.

My consensus:

When is the next one out???

I've just finished reading this one and its left it on such a clifhanger :(

I think it will work out if and when Bethesda releases the next game. By then, Morrowind will allegedly have had 200 years for life to creep back, the way life has been returning to the Mount St Helens area in our world. I wouldn't be surprised if the Dunmer are starting to return to Morrowind, after having created a thriving culture even if it was in exile.

I don't think Titus Mede took the Ruby Throne by force so much as maybe he saw power was lying in the streets for anyone with guts and vision to pick up. It will be interesting to see what his descendants are like -- presumably the descendants of Attrebus and Annaig, though it's way too early to know.

I think they couldnt really make it linear to the story line because then it would give away too much for TES 5.

I think it's a great idea. One of my biggest problems with Oblivion was that it didn't shake anything up. I loved Morrowind, but all that was in Oblivion was "Oh hey there is potential that big things might happen in the future. But not now or here" meaning nothing significant changed from Morrowind. So the world didn't change and, as I increasingly grow to dislike, the lore forum especially becomes complacent to the point of absolute stasis.

Plot Question:

Why are Mere-Glim and Annaig bound to Umbriel? There was that part about them bleeding and then suddenly they cannot leave?

Also, when is the sequel supposed to be released? A good read overall, I'm happy to hear of some familiar Elder Scrolls characters and locations.

time issue, iirc. if you stick around long enough the ingenium somehow remembers you and doesnt let you go.

though, technically, it seems that only corporeal form is lost since the 'moths' are able to take new bodies

GREAT idea, in my opinion. Especially if the tidbit about the next game taking place 200 years after Oblivion is true and I'm positive it is. New names, new places, new factions, new lore.

Just got the book today(I've been meaning to get it for a while). For not even being 300 pages, I was surprised at the $15 price tag. Still, I'm loving the book, and it is TES.

so.... am i the only one who thinks Annaig and Toel should get it on? :hubbahubba:

...

i am? really?

:sadvaultboy:

Your not the only one. Annaig really should just completely immerse herself, and go antagonist in the second book. That way attrebus has to decide between helping to destroy Umbriel and thus killing her or not.

Because Clavicus Vile has not let down his barriers yet. Remember what Vuhon said. "to remain in his realm, at least in a way." Technically the Ingenium is still in oblivion and yet it is not. It moved away from the realm and had to take a piece of it with them to do it. So no one can leave until Vuhon finds a way to free them, and it appears that he has. Whit Gold Tower has something to do with it.

No ETA on the next book unfortunately.

Whit Gold Tower has something to do with it.

Specifically, It may have something to do with the "power over creatia unalike any on this plane(t)" that White-gold has according to the Nu-mantia intercept.

Though the Ayleids gave theirs a central Spire as the imago of Ada-mantia, the whole of the polydox resembled the Wheel, with eight lesser towers forming a ring around their primus. To dismiss this mythitecture as being a mockery of the Aurbis is to ignore an important point: this same "jest" gave White-Gold Tower a power over creatia unalike any on this plane(t). It was a triumph of sympathetic megafetish, and the Start of the [Threat! To! Empire!] that brings me to this Council.

If the Ayleids made their own Wheel within the Wheel, were-web aad semblio, what would happen if they plucked its strings?

I'm guessing Vuhon's going to try to "pluck the strings," in order to remove the limitations placed by vile and either adapt the world to Umbriel or adapt Umbriel to the world.

I'm a horrible critic when it comes to most forms of fiction, so I don't know if the book was technically good, but I did enjoy it.
This, along with the second half of the book, is a nice "snack" to keep me satisfied until the next game starts it's hype-cycle.

time issue, iirc. if you stick around long enough the ingenium somehow remembers you and doesnt let you go.

I first thought it was just because they were eating the food.
They were literally becoming part of Umbriel.

And I agree with previous posters about the Miyazaki-ness(more specifically Spirited Away) of Anna?g's story.

edit: Anyone find it weird that Water's Edge of all places grew into a bustling little port town?
Considering most of it's inhabitants were slaughtered.

I wonder if Border Watch was absorbed? I was pretty fond of that place.

I thought the whole "you're now a part of Umbriel" was lame. They were there for what? Two weeks? They got there when it reached Lilmoth and tried to leave when it reachec Vivec, and it traveled... was it 60 miles in a day and night? Also, when she contacted Attrebus, it took him no longer than two and a half weeks to reach her (though those weeks were quite intense)

Though I suppose it would be difficult to create the sequel if our hero wasn't on the Oblivion island.

All in all, quality read. I found the relationship between Attrebus and Sul to be fun and motivating. When Attrebus was yelling at Sul for claiming he was useless, then his voice began cracking and he started crying, and all Sul said was "Here we go," I couldn't help but crack up. But the whole "Become what they believe you are," parts of the novel were inspiring. Helped build Attrebus's character, and that "Just who do you think I am?" part made me respect the hell out of him. Had to say, for a pansy, I was rooting for him all the time.

I just watched Gurren Lagann last summer too, so when I read the "just who (the hell) do you think I am?" I jumped off my bed and shouted how bad-assed that was.

Is that when everyone in your house suddenly turned to you and said: "have you lost your [censored] mind?!?" due to your spontaneous shouting?

Though I got to agree, that was a moment of awesome for the character.

Why the hell would they do that? Spontaneous shouting and general haminess is the norm for me and the people I tend to hang out with. If we had to act like normal people we'd probably go crazy from boredom and repressed tension.

No. I am not a calm person. I get disproportionately exited at just about everything. It doesn't come over as well over typing as it would if you could see me.
