Official "The Infernal City": An Elder Scrolls Novel

He means "mages who are members of the Imperial Cult" versus "mages who are secular or unaffiliated". It's not the magic that's religious, it's the mages.

probably a lot more rules, too.

Instructor: "Oh, you can't make him think his fingers swell up like melons and green stuff come out his ears with Illusion!"

Student: "But Jim from the College of Whispers did it for his Senior Thesis and got an 'A!'"

I need something to read, and was wondering if anyone here has read The Infernal City yet, is it a good read and would they recommend it, or is it just like the majority of mediocre videogame books out there?

If you love the games then you'll love the book, essentially.

Although it seems to be leading to a typical 'big bad boss that the good guys have to defeat to save the world' video game quality story, the main characters themselves are very well written, especially Prince Attrebus - he's a very unique take on a prince ^_^

I really like it and I still say to library it. It is, after all, only the first half of a book. Release a single-volume version and I'd probably buy it.

What's "video game quality story" mean? That almost seems to imply video games can't have stories as good as other media, which is of course total [censored].

Ah! TT, calm down, no offense was meant... breathe... breeeeeathe....

Okay. I'm good.

Attrebus is a deconstruction of the warrior prince in stories, and I think Keyes does it well. he likes royalty deconstructions. he does it with the character of Anne in his Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone, in a way that definitely entertained me.

Hurm.

It has been quite a while since the first book came out, and still no information whatsoever on the second one. I had kind of assumed that the books were finished being written and that book two is being kept hidden in a box somewhere until an opportune moment, but really. If you leave us on a cliffhanger, then don't be so torturously slow with releases!

Well, people were excited about a book release with an announcement, who knows, maybe book two will actually do it.

I'm guessing...or hoping...that this time, Keyes is putting more effort into the second book. They must have seen the reception on these forums.

but if they did read the forums and sift through the responses, to find what the reader wants improved, awesome for them.

I dont know what y'all are complaining about. The Infernal City was a good read, it molded Morrowind styles with Oblivion and Shivering Isles and it tied up a lot of loose ends. Why do people complain about a story that isn't there's to begin with? It's like star wars, hey it's Lucas's creation just like TES is BETHESDAS creation. Sure they give us an episode or two to play wit. So what if Vivec "dissapeared", we all saw it coming, and we all know that floating prison was gonna hit the deck. Now Umbra has finnaly showed us, the audience, that he is actually something to worry about, because unlike all those daedric princes, Umbra knows how to actually use his power and he USES it. We should all stop complaining and just enjoy the ride.

The serious complaints were made concerning the prose, not the story itself. So...

Well, here at least yeah, even me, who really liked the story. I think the prose did need some hammering out. Some folks I know were upset for different, completely out there reasons, but most of the complaints that made sense were that the language sometimes tripped over itself.

I hate waiting. waiting for Metroid, waiting for Zelda, waiting for TESV and this, waiting for Half Life 2 Episode 3 so I can read it on wikipedia (the story reads well), waiting for Halo: reach, man this E3 is gonna give me a pleasure-hemmorage in my brain.

That is weird. I honeslty don't know. You'd think it would have gone there at the same time, or at least no more than a few days, apart from when it came out here. Does anyone here know how multi-national book releases work?

Just finished reading the book.

I thought it was decent but not great. I didn't think the book was long enough or in depth enough to really develop the characters enough to make them interesting. I think the only one I found compelling was Attrebus. I didn't much care for the whole Kitchen thing on Umbriel, seems odd to choose a Kitchen as a central theme. Anyone else think its weird these Lords are flying around in a floating city and their main focus is on food?

Also didnt care for an entire book that builds to a climix and ends with no resolution. I can understand a series and not doing everything in one book but at least wrap up the individual story before you begin the next. This book feels like a TV show that end with To Be Continued....And then instead of next week you have to wait until months or even years for the sequel.

All this being said I thought the parts in Black Marsh and Attrebus and Sul journeying with the Khajiits was pretty good reading. He seems a decent author, just think it needed a bit more bulk and depth and should not have ended that way.

I liked enough to read the sequel, I just hope its a bit longer than book 1.

As far as video game books it was pretty good I would say.

I refuse to pick up this book for more money than I picked up Redguard for, which was in the five dollar bin in 1999 (strategy guide thrown in for an extra dollar). So when I can get to book for I suppose six plus tax, I'll get it. Unless anyone wants to mail me their copy for five bucks paypal. Hell, since you're a forum member, I'd throw in shipping.

It's still fourteen.99 dollar$ at B&N, so no. I don't want to deprive the store of their Infernal City stock, all 1 book of it.

Agreed. Im not buying the second book if it's 15 bucks. I rarely ever spend more than $8 on books which are twice the size

His story is set up to be expanded, but they haven't quite done so yet. A major downside to cutting a book in half is none of the plotlines get tied up. For a good open ending, see Mass Effect 2. The game's individual plot thread is tied up but the over-arching plot is unresolved. THAT is how to write a "to be continued."
