Was just hanging out with my youngest cousin, who is 8, and brought him to Target for him to buy a video game for his upcoming birthday. He picks up Oblivion, and hands it to me. I decide to test him and ask, "Oblivion? What's that about?" He proceeds to explain as follows...

"It's a game where you're a medieval knight and your trying to save everyone. I'm usually a lizard guy, but I wish they could spit acid and eat people. And I kept dying, so they should make the next game easier."

Bethesda, I am making a request as a responsible young advlt... Don't give my cousin what he wants.

Although I also agree.

I think they will give news about the next game this year or next year.

The combat system in OB was phenomenal, and the combat system in Morrowind was atrocious.

I'd say that what would be good would be a combination of both. Oblivion combat is good for action, but really lacked substance. Morrowind wasn't that great for action, but had a bit more substance since each weapon could be used for blunt, piercing, and slash attacks, with each weapon having different values for each method of attack. A system which is similar to the action of Oblivion, but has the weapon and attack variety from Morrowind would probably be best. Such a system could also impart more substance to defense, whereby certain armors have a better resistance to one type of attack as opposed to others (revival of cloth armor). Borrowing the way that locational damage works within FO3 in regards to arrows and spells would also be a good step in the right direction I think.

I understand that this gets to be a dry topic sometimes with no new information to talk about regarding TES 5. However This is not a discussion on Oblivion vs. Morrowind's systems or which systems TES 5 should use, there are separate topics for that. If you wish to discuss those things use those topics, please don't derail this one, thank you ^_^ .

The off-topic posts have been merged into the Ideas & Suggestions thread.

Please let us have no more discussion along those lines - either about combat mechanics or about the posts. This thread is purely for 'when's it coming out?' speculation.

I haven't heard anything much

though I've been checking in on the TES page weekly (and sometimes daily) just hoping for SOMETHING to come out

there's not a lot of games I play, and of those I do not so many I play constantly but Morrowind and Oblivion were two (fallout 3 was one too)

but I honestly am getting pretty anxious, there are subtle hints at something, but a full out release of what and when? I'm not going to hold my breath...

If we get it...well, I'll be one of the first to preorder it and count down the days til it comes out that's for sure

I will be dead by the time TES V comes out.

:lmao: I couldn't help it. I lol'd when I read this!! Don't worry. I don't think it will be that long, unless you have a health condition we aren't aware of. In that case, I do apologize.

Todd Howard did a podcast with Kotaku and I believe he said that is something he really liked about Morrowind and would incorporate into future games.

This is great to hear. It also pretty much confirms that is what they are working on, especially once you piece together all his other comments. ...I mean, just in case any one was still doubting this.

I don't thionk any of us doubted the existence of TESV in some capacity, but not a one of us has any idea when it's coming or the vehicle of it's deliverance to us.

I doubt that it is in any way connected to TES V but the forum is going to be down for an extended period the next few days accourding to bethesda employee Nick Breckon http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=1080081&st=60&start=60 maybe i'm just hopeful but i hope this means an annoucment is around the corner.

:o It could be. The forum doesn't usually have "significant downtime" longer than a few hours, and even that is rare. And GDC is starting tomorrow. It could totally be a coincidence, and it probably is, but who knows. Maybe they'll announce it in the coming days, and they're doing maintenance on the site to control the flood of posts coming from an announcement.

Here's exactly what he said btw:

We might have some significant forum downtime in the next couple of days. Wanted to let you guys know in case you need to make arrangements.

By that do you mean that'll be completely down or just slower?

Completely down for an extended period.

It might just be a forum upgrade.

If the downtime is longer than 24 hours I'll begin to suspect something suspicious is going on.

But yeah, I may have a teensy heart attack if I see "Skyrim" at the top of the page. :hehe:

I was just wondering how we know about this trademark. It gives Bethesda's game away before it is even announced, so why is this information available to the public?

Because trademarks are public, that's just the way it works. After all, how would people register for new trademarks if they couldn't check to see if it was taken beforehand?

It would be a dream come true for almost all game developers and publishers if trademarks weren't available to the public, but that certainly wont be happening.

So, people knew about Oblivion, Morrowind, Daggerfall, and Arena before they were announced. I know trademarks should be known by others who might want to reserve a name for themselves, but how does anything stay secret with these trademarks being available to us? Has Bethesda trademarked any other names, anything else at all?

If it isn't http://www.boliven.com/trademarks/search?q=zenimax&sort=filing_date%20desc&page=1 or http://www.boliven.com/trademarks/search?q=owner%3A%22BETHESDA+SOFTWORKS+LLC%22&sort=filing_date%20desc, they haven't trademarked it. Yeah, anybody with access to the trademark database would know about the trademarks before the game was announced. It's still a secret to 99% of the fans out there though. It's unlikely people who don't go on Elder Scrolls forums like this have any idea about the trademark, and therefore have no idea what the next game may be called. So when Bethesda announces TES V: Skyrim, almost everybody will be surprised, and that's all that matters.

IF this is true, well, I'll need someone near me when I check the forums to make sure I don't go into a coma...I was in a coma due to some "unknown" virus about two years back which they never found. I'd hate for it to be tied to this and come out of it after everyone else has played the game and non-stop talk about its epicness. :ahhh:

At this point we could turn the news of a beth employee ripping one into a future announcement date.

Is there any decent place to announce in the next week?

GDC 2010 starts today and will last for the next couple of days, and it wouldn't be odd if we got an announcement there.
