I doubt that it is in any way connected to TES V but the forum is going to be down for an extended period the next few days accourding to bethesda employee Nick Breckon http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=1080081&st=60&start=60 maybe i'm just hopeful but i hope this means an annoucment is around the corner.

It could also be the book, but, as Antibody said:
:o It could be. The forum doesn't usually have "significant downtime" longer than a few hours, and even that is rare. And GDC is starting tomorrow. It could totally be a coincidence, and it probably is, but who knows. Maybe they'll announce it in the coming days, and they're doing maintenance on the site to control the flood of posts coming from an announcement.

It is a distinct possibility, even though Zenimax, and not technically Bethesda, is going to be there. It is possible.

It might just be a forum upgrade.

But lord help me if I log back on and at the top I see "TES V- Skyrim General Discussion".

I would, if you'll pardon my vulgar expression, likely have a bad case of sticky keyboard.

GDC 2010 starts today and will last for the next couple of days, and it wouldn't be odd if we got an announcement there.

Hope and pray, mi amicos.

I hate to throw a wrench in the wheel here, but since Zenimax will be at GDC, and not Bethesda, could they be updating the forums for the new MMO that might be announced?

Also a possibility. While the chances of me playing it are very close to zero, I am curious to see what direction they go with it. I suppose we'll see. It could be book two, TESV or the MMO, but it could also be nothing at all. I suppose all we can do as yet is wait and see.

Ha :biglaugh:
But please don't tell us if that does happen.

This as well might be the MMO.

The timing just doesn't seem quite right just yet for an impending announcement. Close, but not quite. However, I'd say it's far from coincidental in view of their future plans. Considering the recent new community manager hire in addition to this tempts me to hope for a bright near future.

Checked the trademarks again to see if they've done anything. The last thing they filled on Skyrim was http://tmportal.uspto.gov/external/PA_1_0_LT/OpenServletWindow?serialNumber=77017500&scanDate=2010013025585&DocDesc=ITU+Extension+Approval&docType=AER¤tPage=1&rowNum=1&rowCount=27&formattedDate=30-Jan-2010 Which leaves them 6 more months before they lose the trademark, right? My memory is a bit fuzzy on that case, but we've talked about it before, if anyone would be so kind to refresh me. If I recall, they get 36 months to use it, extensions and all, so they get 6 extensions of 6 months each (which is 36 months). They're on their fifth extension. So they have to use it by June or they lose it.

Ok so reading through all 10 pages im getting alot of talk about it needing a new system, If you havent noticed or looked into it the xbox 360 will not be obsolete for a very very long time. The 360, and PS3, was made to handle all kinds of graphic enhancements. The original xbox could only hand a certain range of detail and plygons interacting on the screen at once. The 360's games no longer rely on the system, they rely on the tools the game creators are using, for example Halo 3 could only handle up to 20 moving polygons at the same time, now in their new halo reach it can handle hundreds of polygons moving. The 360 was made in such a way to let the game itself decide the limits of graphics and polygons used. so it is very safe to say the new TES V will be released on the 360. now as for what they will be talking on in E3, before Oblivion was talked about in E3 we had no idea they were even developing that game, Yes Bethesda is helping with Fallout New Vegas, Brink is not a Bethesda only game, it is actually a Splash Damage game. Bethesda is acting as lead on Brink to get more sales because Splash Damage is not a big name co. . Elder Scrolls is Bethesda's baby, so you can bet they have been working hard at making a new one way better than any others in the past. here is a link to an interview with Bethesda's exec Paul Oughton reguarding the new TES game. http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2008/10/bethesda-wants/

I am not a console expert by any stretch, but I work in IT professionally so I know a few things about computer hardware. It sounds to me like what you're saying is that the 360 does not have a software limitation to the number of polygons that it can draw simultaneous. This is indeed a positive aspect, but not a limitless one. There is a definite hardware limit. The 360's hardware, from what I understand, has basically the hardware a cutting-edge gaming computer had about 4 years ago. Though the 360 could theoretically draw a limitless number of polygons, I question whether it could it draw them at a rate comparable to today's hardware.

The Paul Oughton quote is old and not very credible.

BTW...welcome to the forums!

Well, GDC has begun. We're still up, don't know for how long. I wonder, on the chance that something, whatever it may be, is announced, would we be down and up again before that or would the forum go down and not be put back up until well after? Maybe as a way to keep people from putting up hot-blooded comments, give a day or two to cool down so things are mostly rational?

The quote is credible, from my understanding, in that he said it. Whether he was supposed to say it is another matter. I work in the financial sector, and am an investor, and as such I'm constantly reading statements and news releases from people like him. Sometimes high mucky mucks who are thinking purely of bottom line say things they're not supposed to because they're not thinking like a developer, they're thinking like a business man giving forward looking statements. But anyway since we're all speculating, I'd be a little surprised if we didn't get a 2010 announcement.

Looked into it, that's a very good point, and true.

It would make sense, then, for them to announce it in a magazine before E3 and to have videos, maybe a trailer or somesuch, at the event?

My speculation is that TES V will be announced somewhere between March 31st and April 5th.
If not TES V then they will indeed be doing something else for The Elder Scrolls sweet 16 birthday (Which is somewhere between March 31 - April 5 actual date is unknown, at least by me.)

The forum is gonna be down for a day or so rather soon for "updates." Could this mean they're getting ready for a TES V announcement? Probably not, but one can hope. :)

I posted this in another thread:

1. Bethesda announces TES V.
2. The forums are down to prevent many people coming on the forums and causing anarchy. The forums will be back up after the hype has died down a little.
3. New section of the forums are opened for TES V.

I realize that there is a very small chance of this happening, but it's been four years without an announcement, and we are overdue for one. Isn't the four year anniversary of Oblivion's release this month?

I won't be surprised if it doesn't happen, but if it is to be announced this year, now seems to be a logical time. What is GDC? I read that something called GDC is happening now.

Off-topic: I can use a computer again. I'm able to come on to the forums again, and perhaps I can convince my mom to let me download Arena and Daggerfall. I was separated from Daggerfall when the other computer broke. I might even be able to get the PC version of Morrowind.

Game Developers Conference. I think it's taking place in San Francisco.

Do you think maybe Todd Howard and Pete Hines are lying when they say they just started to work on the engine for the next game after Fallout 3 was released? Do their graphics programmers and such all work on the engine all through development until the game is released? I highly doubt it. I'm sure at least most of their graphics programmers were working on something else while the rest of the developers were filling in the rest of the stuff for Fallout 3 (quests, locations, assets, etc.)...

I guess that theory is bunk. Too bad. Well, there's still PAX, E3 and magazines.

Also, I love this new forum look. Top score, guys!
