Old 'friend' shows up

I've just bumped into my old drinking buddy while on a quest.

I didn't recognize (or even see) him at first.

It was on a Companions heirloom quest in Morvunskar. I'd been doing the usual sneak attacks with the bow to worm my way into the place when I heard blasts of destructive magic coming from up ahead. Fearing discovery I went all the more carefully and the last hall contained four mages fighting somebody who was hidden from my view. I took out the first two and then moved to the lower level where I saw an arch-mage backed up against a wall, furiously launching inferno attacks against a Daedric clad warrior who appeared to have real horns sprouting from his head rather than just wearing a horned helmet.

This warrior was also being blasted from the side but seemed to take no damage. I helped him out with the first fire mage and then the second. I approached the unknown warrior gingerly, in case he decided to fight me. When he turned to face me, his face was streaked with red and he casually strolled past. He really did have horns. He was tall, too.

Clicking on the figure to speak, the name Sanguine came up. It took a while to remember that he was the Daedric prince from a quest called something like 'a night to remember'*, the one who got me drunk in Whiterun.

I backed away when he wouldn't speak and he just wandered about the hall. When I was far enough away to think I could leg it if things turned sour, I fired an arrow at him but it passed clean through and he paid no attention. Maybe that's just as well.

Have any of you met Sanguine randomly like that, or any other Daedric prince for that matter?

* ironic that I can't remember if that's the right name

This is a bug. It is fixed by the Unofficial Skyrim Patch.

I never thought about bugs. I just thought he popped in at random like the occasional mercenary or assassin you sometimes encounter on the roads.

Mind you, that's a pretty cool bug. He can show up in dungeons any time. He had all four mages totally distracted so that I could pick them off without getting bombarded too much by magika. He'd make an excellent follower.

I may have to get this patch.

Heaps of people are advising it but I haven't had so many problems that I wanted to risk messing things up further...I'm not too great with software stuff. Also when I looked into it there was a choice of different patches from different people.

If I am brave enough to try it, is the legendary patch the one to go for, since I've got dawnguard hearthfire and dragonborn? If so, does it matter who I get it from?

Since you have all three DLC, the http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1538020-relz-unofficial-skyrim-legendary-edition-patch-usleep-1/ is definitely what you want. It doesn't matter which site you download it from. It is the same patch. It is just mirrored on different sites for convenience. :)

Cumbrianlad.... USLEEP is SO much better than messing about with the separate patches. Most mods now are planned with it as necessary. I had the separate unofficial patches, then decided that USLEEP was going to be a necessity, so downloaded it. But if you've already got a bunch of mods, you're also going to need the Swap Master script:

I was a bit intimidated with that - no matter that I've been using computers since 1984 and the 'net since 1988 or so. But it was very easy, the docs are good, and I only had a couple of mods that needed "intervention".

I'm going to say "go for it". And if you have issues, post here and we'll try to get it sorted out for you!

Thanks good people!

I'm going to take the plunge.

I play without any mods whatsoever, so that should make it easy enough for an old codger like me to handle.
