Old modders never say goodbye they just... get their threads locked by Rohugh

Its that time of year when I start getting nostalgic - maybe because US friends are heading off to see family for Thanksgiving or the year is winding down and I start reflecting on what I've seen in modding this year

Previously I've done some lists of what mods were released, but I do believe that baton has been and truly handed over to Darkelfguy who not only names the mods but can also show them via his many, varied and excellent videos as you can see here and there

Lately I've been wondering about modding and modders. This forum is still active and in fact out of Oblivion and Skyrim modding often has more visitors here and yet the threads here are a lot quieter than I recall. Perhaps the higher number of visitors are those who like to keep an eye for nostalgic reasons on Morrowind, I know I find it hard not to check in at least once a day.

Modding for Morrowind isn't dying off, but the commenting has, maybe that's just the nature of the internet now, I never thought I'd miss Wolli posting on almost every single topic.

So anyway I thought I'd start this topic of Old modders never say goodbye... because its against forum rules... though I hope that is relaxed just prior to the shift to bethesda.net whenever it is that site kicks off its community hub

There are many modders who have moved on from here, 1000's even, some I've seen go on to Oblivion and Skyrim and those other games that distract Todd from his core business.

Are there any modders you have followed from Morrowind through other games? Any who influenced you?

Perhaps you can come up with some better catchphrases than me for the phrase Old modders never say goodbye they just...

...move on to the next game

...burn out

...fall out more

Thanks to all those who supported this forum this year, and to all those who shared comments, mods, dreams, angst and laughs - and to all you old modders out there - peace.

I don't think there's anything wrong with a thread discussing the modding community, especially one with a positive vibe. :)

Lately, I've been really thinking about getting some mods finished.
I see my WIPs on my PC, and it's just kinda sad knowing that I'm letting them collect dust. :(

But every time I come to the MW forum, I get more inspiration to keep working on them. I like to think that is a sign of a still healthy modding community for Morrowind. People here still inspire others.

The main reason preventing me from modding more is that there are so many good games to play! It's a double edged sword, because I often get new ideas from these games to add to a mod.

Edit: Also people who play and mod doom are still all over the place so we will be as well

Brash is the first that comes to my mind. She is an exceptionally talented modder I've followed since her debut in early 2003 and have continued to follow to this day. In fact she's sitting a few feet away from me as I type this. That's how closely I follow her.

Another modder I've followed over the years is Emma. She did phenomenal work in Morrowind, did even more phenomenal work in Oblivion and did work that was more phenomenal still in Skyrim. She just keeps getting better and better as the years go by. I look forward to seeing what she comes up with for TES VI.

Another is Princess Stomper. I refuse to play Morrowind without her Suran Extended, Oblivion without her Imperial City Apartment or Skyrim without her Princess Solitude Barnacle Cottage. She has even made mods for me, bless her. More importantly, she has not banned me from the forums.

But most of the guys and gals who were around when I first showed up are gone now. Horatio, Mephisto, Clone`, The Puma Man, Qarl, Skydye, Allerleirauh, Lady Eternity and so many more. Visiting the forum now is like visiting the town where you grew up and finding that all of your childhood friends have moved away. It's a bittersweet feeling. But the new residents of the small town seem to taking care of the place pretty well. :)

I agree that the forums have quieted down. I think it's partially just the time of year, but I know that I have been posting less than I used to and I'm not vacationing or anything.

It sure is. I've been captured by a few games rather than modding recently myself... building up the itch to mod some more though.

I agree about Emma. I never really followed Oblivion or Skyrim modding aside from checking the modding forums and Nexus now and then. But even so, I couldn't help but hear about Emma's projects.

I can imagine. Even for me, only being in the community since 2008, there are still lots of people I used to converse with quite often and outside of the forums on Skype and such that just aren't around anymore. But we get lots of new faces that often come in and create awesome new content or provide interesting insights on the forums; so I think that all is good.

Agreed. Only here since 2007, and there's all these "kids" (I bet a good portion of them are older than me, but you know what I mean) running around now. :P I didn't seriously mod for years now, and I was a very useless member when it comes to releasing mods, and yet I still play all these new games and see features I like as something I'd implement in a mod of mine. So I'd definitely say it's nostalgia that's keeping me here, checking the WIP and other topics on a pretty much daily basis.

Vurt made some neat tree mods for Morrowind and went on to do similar mods for Skyrim and Fallout New Vegas.

And then I randomly spotted him in the very small but still living System Shock 2 modding community. :P

I've always enjoyed Emma's Lokken Mountain mod for Morrowind, but I haven't tried the companions. I went on to play with various versions of Companion Vilja in Oblivion and Skyrim. Good stuff.

I was never a big Morrowind modder, but I did some stuff for Oblivion and Fallout. I don't think I was directly inspired by specific modders, I just had a general feeling of wanting to give something back to the awesome modding communities. Morrowind is still my favourite game to use mods with.

This thread reminds me of a retex I was going to try and complete. :-)

I've hardly moved on, but am currently stuck in The Witcher III. Rather bleak game, I have to say - but the detailing is amazing and the landscapes are gorgeous (I just wish there wouldn't be gibbets everywhere around the place - ugh!).

And I'm just getting started! My start in modding was Oblivion, but now I'm doing my first Morrowind mod - the Unofficial Morrowind Patch. :P

I think the only modders whose works I've followed through multiple games are Vurt and Emma, both already mentioned here. I too am just getting started modding. Back when I was a teenager I made campaigns for Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds, but I haven't really modded since except to make little tweaks here and there. It's an interesting experience.

Thought that name sounded familiar. I'm Invertix. Did a bunch of Mon Calamari stuff way back then. Good to see you're still around.

Glad to see you're still modeling; your Mon Cal work was probably the most ambitious GB project before Dallows' Expanding Fronts. :) Despite using the Zaarin name everywhere, I don't think I've ever run into anyone from SWGBH boards elsewhere before. :D

Yes I used Vurt's trees for Skyrim and also AOF's hair textures - it was nice to use familar modder's work

This is what happens when you spend years underground in Dwemer fortresses.

I am still working through Witcher 1 on PC and 2 on the 360 - might be a while before I get to 3 :)

I've been here since 2008, not nearly as long as many others but it's sure been a big part of my life. As far as modders I've followed on to other games, vurt has been brought up already, but I thought I'd say trainwiz has made some pretty neat stuff for Skyrim and Fallout: New Vegas.

Personally I came here after "modding" Ultima 9 via editing ini settings to manipulate the game in ways the devs hadn't intended, and later making personal mods (none actually released though) for Halo 2. Stuck around with Morrowind for a while and swore I wouldn't get distracted by modding other games.. until I made some mods for Starbound under the name Markelius and then promptly got bored of the game when the updates were so inconsistent in terms of the content they were bringing. :P

are consumed by 'real life'. :P

*glomp* :hugs:

Emma was the first name that sprang to mind. I do love Kateri's mods, too - but that's hardly a secret. In terms of actual inspiration, mine are Phoebe Abu and Korana (again, no secret!) - but most modders influence me in some way.

What a lovely thread!

In terms of continuing to mod, I usually just stare at my pile of unfinished mods, watch the colour drain out of my face and panic - so much to do! I will get around to it eventually, though. :)

Return to III - Morrowind
