Old People need to walk badly

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 8:59 pm

I gotta ask, whats up with everyone expecting extreme realism from a fantasy-universe? In most cases these suggestions does not add anything to the game.

I really cant understand why anyone would want Bethesda to use money&time on things like:

- old people walking badly
- you shouldnt be able to run forever
- clothes to keep you warm in Skyrim
- every item should have a usefull purpose (unlike the much loved paint brush in Oblivion. )
- have children
- be a child
- have a wife
- having a pet
- decorating your own house
- have a garden you grow things in
- you have to eat
- swimming in cold water should affect.....
- ability to write a book
- death sentence(to the man who will/has saved the skyrim)
- innvite NPC over to your house for cake and tea.

And jesus [censored] christ the list goes on and on. There is no end to all these suggestions.

Not all of them are pointless.
Eating/drinking/sleeping is actually pretty good idea that would improve a game.

You know what would be awesome? If the old people were just whining about seeing mudcrabs and how horrible they were, and had nothing else to say, other than to offer you stale ribbon candy.

Seriously, this would not add anything to the game as far as I am concerned. Yes, I like variety in NPC looks and voice and actions, that's great, but I don't need a lot of trivial "flavor" either.

- There should be different animations for different NPCs, in Oblivion this was part of why everyone seemed the same.
- You shouldn't recover fatigue from running, most marathon runners can run forever in the context of a game though.
- Why not, the Dark Brotherhood could have a quest to rectify this.

Oh, wait, that'd require more dialogue, and more time to create personalities. ;)

Not to mention really putting a massive workload on the 9 voice actors. ;)

I'm fine with the six-pack elderly. There are plenty of other features that are much more top-priority than how the elderly walk. This kind of feature could be a project for modders.

I thought the topic was, old people badly needs to walk and had to see what this had to do with Skyrim. :)

Variety is good I suppose.

Only if they also scream "Get off my lawn you damn kids!"

Y'know, to make up for kids getting into the game.

Well perhaps I think it'd be interesting to see "elderly" NPC's a little bit hunched over, though I'd be interested in finding some old man with a cane you try to kill and it turns out he's infact absurdly skilled and just beats your sword wielding ass with said cane.

Thats yoda right there.

Not necessarily a frail walking animation, but I'm wholeheartedly in favor of a range of body types, including young to old. When my middle-aged, alcoholic, paunchy Imperial takes his robes off and he's built like an Olympic athlete, it sort of spoils the illusion.

And all old kung-fu movies have at least one old guy beating the crap out of a small village containing bad guys.

Hopefully those old people will improvise canes and brooms as weapons, and then run off when you pull your sword: In Oblivion most everyone showed no fear and would attack you or guards with their fists.

It doesn't make sense for old people to be alive long enough to use canes given the harsh conditions of a medieval type world, especially given Skyrim's rough climate

I'm old, I walk perfectly well without a cane. I ought to get one so I can hit all the kids in this thread who think old folks should be all hunched over and using a cane. :frog:

And now I'm grumpy.

This, I think, only suggests at a broader issue: animations in general. Sure, some of them look snazzy, but everyone walks in the exact same way. Even "Lame one-legged Ned" walks in the exact same perfect strut that everyone else does. A relatively simplistic modification would simply be allowing for the swapping of part/all of an NPC's animation set with another animation file, and then using this to reflect disability in some characters. Of course, canes might be a bit more complicated, since they'd involve specific items that they'd have to hold in a certain way...
And now I'm grumpy.

Well, at least some people guess half-right. ;)

Yes, let's enforce the stereotypes of old people.

You are old. You read a thread looking down on old people, and get grumpy.

While I would like to see some people walk differently than others, possible lameness in a leg or old age or what have you, I would hate to see ALL old people walk badly. My grandpa is pushing 70 and he is much more physically fit than most of the fatty fat kids who never experienced mandatory gym class. Find me a tazer and I will make them get slim...

Just give them various max speeds and hit them with different kinds of walking animations (prevent running), job done. But, I could say the same for all characters - young and healthy - record plenty of walk cycles and assign (semi) randomly to keep things a bit varied.

In a harsh place like Skyrim, you don't get worn out and withered.

You just die.

(Well english is not my native language, and since you did not end your post with a "happy face" I don't know if I offended you. My guess is no.)

Also to the guy/gal talking about there was missing variation in Oblivions NPC animation. The first mod I downloaded was to fix that. Made it a better game.
