Old RPG's have become boring

Post » Mon Nov 29, 2010 6:01 am

I disagree. I've been playing some older RPGs since finishing DA2, and have to say they are just as enjoyable as they ever were. Of course i haven't touched those games in years, so it's not like i can remember every detail of them. That same way i still play old NES games.

My favourite games are still the late 90s early 00s ones, never seem to get bored of them, and I never played them on release (only started playing older games in 2007-2008). So it's just you and some others. :P

That's nostalgia for you. My favourite FPS game is Medal of Honor: Frontline. I played that endlessly on my PS2. Some time ago I played the enhanced version which was on the disc of the latest MoH game for PS3. Great, I thought, a chance to enjoy once again one of my favourite games of all time. I think I only made it to the end of the second level before I realised that some things should stay in the past.

Chrono Trigger, Baldur's Gate series, Planescape Torment, System Shock 2, Deus Ex, Morrowind, KOTOR... Nope, not boring at all.

I have the same problem, I really want to play Morrowind but as soon as I do, I get bored within a few hours. But for me, I think it's because I played it too much in the past. 5 more years and I can probably play the game again and have a lot of fun re-finding old things, as of right now I haven't played in about 2 years (started up a game and played for maybe 8 hours overall on the 360), so another 5 and I can probably play the PC version again (it's been about 4-5 years since I played the PC version last).

Same goes with a few other RPGs, like the FF's I have, NWN and some others. Same thing happens with RPG's of today actually, I play them once and won't touch them again for a long time.

I remember playing wolfenstein 3d (doom and wolfenstein are made by same people just so no-one gets confused as to why I quoted ToJKa) when i was 5. What better to start playing first person shooters then to play the first one ever made?

The slew of older RPGs in my collection are still more fun than most newer games. Heck, I just put 50+ hours into Final Fantasy VII on what must be my 5th time through the game and now I have my eye on Persona 4.

Not that there aren't any good games nowadays, but overall they just don't seem nearly as memorable. I can't imagine myself thinking about many of this generation's "best" games years down the road, let alone playing 'em countless times.

Is it just me or have the old RPG's become really boring? I remember back in the day when I played NWN and Morrowind and they were my favorite games. I could play them for hours on end, I recently started playing them again and my god were they boring. I almost got through the whole Morrowind Main Quest but there were only a few moment's in the entire game that were fun this time playing it. The same with NWN. I think I've gotten spoiled by the newer games out there, I really can't see what I thought were so great about the games back then. It really bugs me that i can't play these games again and enjoy them. Am I the only one who feels this way?

There's personal preference.. as in, maybe this type of RPG isn't for you?

But for some, older styles is not compatible with them. I dislike most older music and virtually all older movies. On the other hand, I still enjoy older RPG's like Willow, Chrono Trigger, FFVII, FFVIII, FFIX, Brave Fencer Musashi, along with older games of other genres like Doom, Rise of the Triads, Starcraft, C&C/C&C:RA, Mega Man 2, and so on.

To each their own. There's no rule that you have to like older games.

Ahh gotta love id Software. Still my favorite game dev.

To OP

I think it's just you. Most of the games I'm playing now are 80's-90's stuff. Fallout 1 + 2, Arena, Daggerfall, Deus Ex, Baldur's Gate, some non RPG stuff like Doom, Prince Of Persia, Castle Wolfenstein (one of the best stealth games eva) etc.

Familiarity breeds boredom. Regardless how much you like a game if you play it for a long time you're going to get bored.

Very true. Try taking a break from Morrowind and trying out a different genre, try something way out there that you usually don't play, like a music game, or maybe a sports game

I'm the same way OP.

The reality is that sometimes our tastes and expectations change over time. I used to be very dedicated to classic RPGs like Planescape or Baldur's Gate. Now when I play those games again I realize that I've come to prefer 3d graphics, faster pacing, and spoken dialog. It doesn't mean those games are or were bad, simply that they no longer reflect everything I expect and desire from a game.

I mostly start up older games when I'm looking for some nostalgia. When that nostalgia wears off, I'll move back onto something I'm more interested in playing.

NWN is [censored]. Morrowind doesn't work on my computer too well, so I can't judge. I think you may not be going old enough. That, or you've already played them and now it's dull playing it again and again (happens to me). Or maybe you're used to newer games and their simpler game mechanics. I don't know, but I do know that it's possible to enjoy playing older RPGs far, far, far, far more than newer ones.

I can tell you that ever since Fallout 3 introduced me to the world of old RPGs, I have enjoyed them greatly and hold in disdain newer ones when I attempt to compare. Anyone who says I suffer from rose-tinted glasses had better be talking abut why I enjoy Fable, because I played that before ever playing Fallout or Ultima VII or any of the old games I enjoy playing these days.

Older RPG's that have pixelated graphics are hard for me to get into these days. It's not that I can't, but it takes me a lot longer to get past the "eww, 16 color pixels" reaction to just enjoying the gameplay, and sometimes I don't feel like taking the time.
But games like Morrowind still look ok graphically (even if they're not "omg uber eyecandy" now) so if I could make myself play it again, I'm sure I'd enjoy it/wouldn't find it boring. But often I don't feel like taking the time to play something I've already played, even if I haven't touched it in 5 years.

The familiarity breeds contempt point is also valid. Even when something is a treasured fave, and even if you don't revisit it too often, eventually it starts to lose a bit of the magic. Sometimes it takes 2 years, sometimes 5, sometimes 10...but it'll happen at some point. It's not that you don't still love/admire/respect the game or that it has to be removed from one's all-time faves list, but nothing stays magically shiny forever.

These days tho, I have more trouble with the "been there seen that" syndrome w/trying to play new games. That is, during a certain period I played so many games in several genres that in recent years it's hard to find one that does the same ol' same ol' in a way that makes it feel fun/exciting again. If you know what I mean. Skills that have different names but still feel the same/have the same purpose (the 3000th version of a freeze, summon, or fireball spell, oh goodie) and new monster skins aren't enough to excite me. Thus I'm finally becoming more of a "graphics [censored]"...when that wears off, I'm not sure what I'll do. ;)

I'm the opposite. I prefer well drawn 2D to muddy textures and low polygon 3D (like anything before 360/PS3 era).

Games like Baldur's Gate1 don't bother me much...Dungeon Keeper1/Diablo1/Casear3 are still on my playlist for instance. It's more the games like '89's Prince of Persia or Dink Smallwood (art style made it look worse imo). And I agree that old 3d stuff like Doom or Might & Magic6/7 or Eye of the Beholder2 or even (original) Myst aren't pretty anymore, especially on today's bigger monitors. They seemed fine at the time, but now...

It's not 2d vs. 3d I really mean tho...it's a washed out color + pixel/resolution thing which can exist in either. I should have kept an old 14" tube monitor, would have helped. Stupid LCD native resolution stuff..

The original Prince of Persia doesn't look bad to me.

I have this thing about pseudo 3D... stuff like Baldur's Gate, Golden Sun, Donkey Kong Country, etc. Anything that isn't pixelated 2D or advanced 3D just doesn't look that great to me. :ermm:

But... Dink Smallwood looks awesome.

I can still play games like that, and Morrowind, without any problems. The only ones I can't bear anymore are original gameboy games.

Same, although I can play anything. Daggerfall was actually the only game hard for me to get into because on my monitor things were a bit difficult to make out. After I went past the graphics, it's now in my top 10 games of all time. OF ALL TIME.

I agree, Neverwinter Nights looks incredibly dull visually compared to Planescape Torment or Baldur's Gate 2.

I'm going to agree with this. I can't play Oblivion, anymore, no matter how hard I try for the (sort of) newer games, for example. In contrast, I also can't play my old favorite of Baldur's Gate II, anymore... not even after all the time I spent not playing it. Play a game too much, and it seems you can never truly get back to being interested in it... or at least that's how it seems, in my case.

I agree, I've played Oblivion so much just opening the game gives this feeling of loneliness, like the illusion has broken. Where I once was completely entranced by the game world, I know can't see the world for the pixels. I see scripts and mechanics instead of people and a breathing world. Nothing is a mystery.

It's not so much old games as it is just games that I played extensively before.

I currently find Daggerfall, and Baldur's Gate great fun, but that's because I didn't play at all when they first showed up.
